Title: HKS Intercooler
Post by: scoobster on August 14, 2004, 09:50:25 PM
Been looking into getting an HKS Intercooler but on Taka Kiara all the HKS intercoolers are listed to fit chassis numbers 200000 + but it lists the years as 91/12 onwards

Now mine is a 93 Type X but from the chassis number i have been given it\'s below 200000?????

Any ideas if it will fit?????

You say your from the North East, were abouts???

Cheers Scott.

The HKS kit on eBay has pipework missing.

If you dont get caught with tax and duty you will have a sweet deal, but if you do get caught then you will be paying almost as much as if you bought it from the UK.

Plus there are better kits about now, than the HKS kit for a lot less money.

SCOOMER, yeah that was the one i was thinking about bidding on but rang Sumo to ask if it would fit a 93 Type X with a lower chassis number but they said they didn\'t know for sure but if HKS say it\'s for above 200000 then the chances are it won\'t fit:(

Fish, which IC kit would you fit? and where can i get one from?

All I will say for now is hold on, as one is being developed at the moment. They are also working of a V-Mount kit. ;):D

is there a simple explanation of the pro\'s & cons of front mount vs. V mount
Title: HKS Intercooler

Front Mount:

Pros: Cold air to the intercooler, thus keeping charge temps down.
Cons: Obstruction placed in front of radiator, thus temps *could* go up.

V-Mount:

Pros: Cold air to both intercooler and radiator. Again keeping temps down.
Cons: PRICE!

what\'s the price implication.  Are V-Mounts awkward to fit?

spotted this on eBay.  decent or rubbish?

The V-Mounts are normally a good couple of hundred quid more as you get both the intercooler and radiator.

Never seen a Trust kit like that fitted to an FD. But have seen some older versions.

so I presume you need to replace the stock rad as well?  for some reason I though it could be repositioned.

sorry for thread jack and what are probably real simple and basic questions!

Most front mounts will allow you to just stand up the stock rad.

Does an FMIC on an RX7 require you to lose the AC, someone told me this and I just wanted to check.

Does the V-mount cool the charge as well as a FMIC and could you please explain what a V-mount is. Is it just like a bigger version of the standard setuo?

Thanks.

V mount can be seen here:
http://www.rotaryextreme.com/vmountmain.html (http://www.rotaryextreme.com/vmountmain.html)  basically it\'s like a erm v kinda comparable to a whales mouth i guess :rollin

You dont *have* to loose the AC with a front mount, just takes a little longer on the install.

Follow this link (http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/~knight78/FD3S.htm) to the Knightsports website. You will see the intercooler of a v-mount in the top couple of pictures, and the kit a bit further down.

The difference between a front mount and v-mount is that the v-mount shares the cold air between the intercooler and the rad, the front mount sits in front of the rad.

So the FMIC blocks some of the air flow to the Rad! but is engine cooling a big issue on the RX? is the standard cooling system not up to the job so to speak

But isn\'t the V mount a compromise between engine and intake cooling?

What i mean is wouldn\'t a FMIC give you better intake cooling than a V mount and fit an up-rated rad to correct the loss of water cooling the FMIC makes???

If you know what i mean :)

The stock setup is crap IMHO. Fancy putting the tiny little intercooler behind the rad! How stupid.

So long as the kits are installed properly, you shouldnt have many problems.

The one thing to try and do, is to try and stop the air going around the units. I.E. forcing it to go through the intercooler and rad.

At what stage is the stock IC no longer efficent, sorry for all the questions but i am finding it hard to figure out the best route for mods on the RX coming from the Skyline

would i be better off getting a PFC first before i start with IC\'s etc?

the stages of mods on the RX seem to be the other way round to the liner thats all! with that i did with the Skyline was the exhaust, downpipe, cat, induction kit, up-rated turbo and IC before fitting and mapping of the PFC

Get a Power FC first; rotors depend too much on perfectly adequate fuel; once u change the exhaust you are playing with fire without a programmable computer that u can throw in more fuel with and play with boost settings in order to try and keep things running how u want them....

All the intercooler setups have some kind of compromise.

Any one actually have a v-mount that they can comment on? I know Bri just got a car with one on but that felt well hot at pod the other day with a bit of heat soak? the heat from the rad and bay must soak a v-mounted i/c worse than with a front mount core...

So what boost does the FD run as standard? and what boost are the tubs good for without up-rated internals

Thats what i was thinking, the FMIC set up must be quite a bit better at keeping the intake temp down

Do the FD\'s run with high under bonnet temps? good reason to tell my other half (notice i said other and not better LOL) that i need a vented carbon bonnet for it!!!:D
