Title: help warning light failure but they still work....
Post by: dooby69 on February 03, 2016, 11:06:39 PM
please don't flame me i know the idiot light problems have been done.
iv gone over the basics iv removed the unit opened it resoldered refitted with no difference.
my problem is wierd.
it is on a k registered 1992 turbo 2 convertible with 35k on the clock.
the engine is good starts mint hot or cold had a problem with the tps dying on me in the first 200 miles so purchased a brand new one from mazda. she now runs a treat.
but last week the clock(time) started to fade on and off so i resoldered it. to be honest it was in good nick inside and made no difference to the clock.
so i investigated further.
long story short the fuse for the cig lighter, mirrors, and clock has only got 1 volt but all other fuses are fine.
so until i find the root of the problem which im hoping to get some help here for i have temporarily jumped the live side of the fuse to another ignition live fuse.
this has made the clock, mirrors and cig lighter work again. i think this affects the ignition live side to the radio too but the radio has been removed so i didn't notice that problem
but then i noticed a few days after when i switched the ignition on no warning lights lit up.
i opened the door and that worked started the engine and it still runs and drives still have all running lights and other electricals.
the fog light warning light works the low fuel warning light still works as does the hazards.
but when i have the ignition on with the engine off only the clock is lit up on the idiot cluster no battery light no oil light nothing.
what turns them all on when the engine isnt running?
is it the engine ecu or is there another box i need to look at somewhere??
iv gone over most of the earths on this car when i was diagnosing the tps problem.

No flaming in here  :D

Cant remember what they all do as its been a while but  you will know you have lots of relays on the front panel, which  may be a good place to start.

You will find a wiring diagram via the link below that should help.

I think you need to look behind the fuse box where the feed onto the live side of fuse is check that pushing fuse in has not pushed connector out. If ok then as Clive says work out which relay feeds that fuse.
Is the clock on all the time or ign feed?

so you bought a cab then

I tried to email you a week or so ago to see if you were still on the look out :(

as far as your issue .. no idea pal

I got all sorts of weird issues with a faulty ECU , but the fact that yours starts and drives would suggest its not that

time to get out the wiring diagram and trace wires :(

yes bought a cab its in ok shape has had a slight nudge both front and rear but has been repaired.
the roof needs doing but i wasnt really interested in the body its the 35k engine im interested in as my long term plan is to fit it into my s4 coupe.
im half contemplating fitting the n/a then into the cab.
the chassis are mint no welding been done and non needed,
she flew through an mot.
needs a bearing in the diff though she sings a merry tune haha
she is too good to break completely so once the engine is out she will sit in my garage next to the sa22c where my coupe is currently residing.
coupe out cab in thats my plan :)
as for the idiot light issue i was having iv found the culprit i was changing the oil today and spotted the alternator plug was undone not the one on the back of the alt itself but further down the wire.
i mustn't of got it all the way home when i refit the alternator after replacing the tps and it worked itself loose.
went together with a click and i have all my warning lights again now  :)
must remember to check the fuse power again though i cant see that being the problem with that
thanks all for your suggestions

turns out my turbo wasnt functioning correctly or more in particular the wastegate spindle bearing had collapsed resulting in a partial open wastegate all the time.
surprised how it produced 205 hp without the turbo working correctly
while it was off i got them to put new bearings and seals into it
cost me £250 to get it repaired
my boost gauge now goes up to just short of the 45 now at full throttle which it never used to it used to sit just under the 10
can hear it working now  :)

thanks clive this is fc number 3 and also have 2 fbs well 1fb rot box and a good sa22c :) so not new to that club
the body doesnt look too bad but .....
windscreen has a crack in it,
fuel pump is dead,
got it running with my working sender and fuel lines leaking badly underneath.
floorpan is very bad and would need cutting out lots of welding shows the 204 thou on the clock
clutch pedal solid to the point something broke when i tried to press it and it flopped to the floor
no drivers seat
passenger door wont open seems latch has jammed locked as operating the driver door lock tries to open it but fails wont
open by hand either and the key operates the lock outside but key would snap before it would open
thats just what iv found while getting it running iv not had it on the ramps yet id love to save it but i think its beyond saving by my finances anyway
my plan for it is engine, running gear, wiring etc out and fit it all into my black egi.
