Title: The price (£) of power?
Post by: chrisBoid on August 13, 2004, 10:10:49 AM
I posted this in another thread but I think it deserves it\'s own to get a bit of focus.

I think it would be a good guideline if the people in the know could answer the following question: -

How much would it cost to take a standard 3rd RX-7 and have it produce x amount of rwhp in street trim (without Nitrous) AND still handle great, more of an all rounder than being better at one discipline (think TOTB).

300rwhp
400rwhp
500rwhp

What would need to be replaced/removed/altered?
Would it still be streetable at all these levels?
What could you expect on the 1/4 mile?

Chris.

You meant like some of the EVO, Skylark etc tuners advertise?

E.g. 300bhp needs this and this, costs XXXX

Trouble is these things are never really that indictive of whats going to be needed, \'cos you never know what horrors are going to be found lurking in the engine room!  The best thst could be achieved is to say:-

\'Parts A thro\' G are needed, plus work X on Model Type Y.  Prices start around XX but may end up being XXX when we discover the family of dead squirrels in your inlet manifold....\'

Can\'t comment on what the skybus and scoob tuners advertise - never take any notice!

Yeah, any figures will always be tentative of final costs, but a ball park figure is still a good starting point and a goal to aim for.

my 3rd gen type r has twin HKS induction and kakimoto backbox, so how much power should i epect from that? its a fairly cheep mod to do.

Well sadly you wont be covered for lost nutz, however if in the future you upgrade to nuts then an RAC NUTstar tracking device can be installed to ensure you get them back quickly.
As for your missing nutz, I expect they\'ve been resprayed and sold into a squirrel prostitiution ring.

It is kind of a difficult thing doing a breakdown like this (in hp brackets). I think it is better to look at it in the following way (a price breakdown of the bits):

1. Engine block with all new parts (possible dowelling - although there are some 800hp 13B\'s that don\'t have dowels!):  Â£3-5K
2. Porting: £500  (peripheral port maybe more)
3. Apex Seals: £200-600  (go Ianetti or standard Mazda - both work!, but there is a big difference in price).
4. Intake, 500+RWHP and you start having to go with custom plenums, throttle bodies etc.:  Â£3000
5. Fuel system (again, more hp - more £): £2000
6. Turbo & wastegate (you could run multiple also): £3000
7. Exhaust (inc. proper manifold): £2000
8. Intercooler/charge cooler (incl. plumbing) £2000
9. ECU!!! (again more £ - the better it is to tune): £3000 - based on the best gear
10: If you are planning on running 10\'s the standard FD gearbox with slicks will last a number of runs, but not a lot! Clutch, and Diff has to be taken into consideration, SO!: up to £10,000
11. Wiring (labour): £1000
12. Pluming and fittings: £1000

Tyres, tuning, blah blah blah!!!

Maybe £30,000-35,000 or so - should get you a consistent 9 second FD.

On the other hand, you could get into the 10\'s spending a hell of a lot less - by not getting all the good stuff, not using new gear etc.

Excellent information

Personally, getting into the 10\'s would be my limit, my ballpark figure for that was £15-20k for a reliable upgrade package.

Post by: g11ary on August 13, 2004, 03:44:37 PM
Just be careful who you throw £35k at that might be the right amount of money, but after suppling the engine, ported and dowled, supplying the exhaust system, the turbos and giving £23k to a specialist, he still cant give me a 10 sec car.

Agreed, serious vetting needs to be done.

I\'m not sure if the upgrade could be staged over time, as upgrading one component means another must be upgraded and so on.

Which means I\'ll have to save a lump sum, and with these estimates, that\'ll take a while.  Over that time I can increase my understanding of what needs to be done and the tuners will have increased their skills.

Gary, may I ask how your car is coming along now?

I don\'t have one as yet, but it keeps looking better every week.

My plan (albeit only in my head right now, as I don\'t have anything to play with) is roughly this.

Get the thing.
Give it a good clean, check everything with service manuals and wiring diagrams on hand. Make sure it\'s all there and accounted for. Find out what it\'s got as a baseline.
Rebuild the suspension with the best I can justify.
Brakes are open to speculation. I could do something strange and get a set of Harrop calipers/rotors at a good price. Whatever, they will be good.
Wheels of course to clear the brakes, plus some rubber to keep the rims from digging furrows in the road.
Clutch back driveline. Wonder if Mr. Holingers brother/nephew still remembers me?
Bodywork. Remove any superfluous weight. And I plan to do my own carbon. Done it before, just not on a car sized scale before. Should be fun and tie in with how my career seems to be heading right now. Make it light, strong and stiff.
Electrical. Reduce electrical consumption, re-wire the whole thing and wire in a proper ECU.
Last, but not least!
Engine. By this stage a little time will probably have passed. But the car will not have been driven a great deal. It will also be capable of using whatever amount of horsepower I manage to find most effectively.

Going this way, I should wind up with a car that is fast, and can handle it. I should also have brushed the cobwebs out of my system and wont make it go all pear shaped. I can also spread the cost out over a prolonged period, or a short time if finances allow, while still having something I can take for a fang that will constantly improve with time, like a good wine.

Driven more than a few cars with lots of power and nothing else. Not much fun to be blunt. Also driven a few cars with great grip, but little go. Quite entertaining, and embarrasing to other road users.

Anyway, maybe ambitious, maybe a long time coming. But at least I should be able to achieve it for reasonable cost, and I can bail out if required early on without dumping a bucket of cash if something comes up and I must direct cash to more important things.

That\'s me.

I also live in Japan, which helps! :D

Gary, may I ask how your car is coming along now?

I honestly believe that we have some great engine builders in this country and have 100% faith in what Carl Hayward does, unfortunately there is no one yet that can offer a complete package that can deliver a 10 sec car YET.
I personally have now looked at the costs of shipping a car out to OZ and having them tune her. For what Reworx have charged and the standard they have delivered it will be cheaper to have the car assembled and built to your spec here and get the experts to finish her off. Dont tell me about warrentees as I cant imagine anyone warrenteeing a 10 sec anyway and there was a post this week about a car built in NZ and has run for 4 seasons without a problem.

My car is off to Rotechniks this month as I waiting for David to get back from his hols and for them to free up some time and space, and waiting for DS Engineering to finish my hydrolics and roll cage. My car is available to look at until it goes to Rotechnics if anyone is interested in looking at UK workmanship.
Then the courts will decide.

Once a report has been finished I will post in the old thread I had going ( where to go from here) and will eventually post proceeding outcome.

Yours sincerely
Bitter & twisted from Dartford.

What Gary is saying is that the engine (Supplied by me for TOTB2 as a sponsorship for that event only and after be returned to me) turbo\'s and exhaust were all not the cost\'s incurred by the person assembling the package. It has kept me out of pocket to the tune of £5000.00 for the engine still sitting in Gary\'s car.(Not Gary\'s fault)
Those items were additional to the £23,000.00.

Now I do oversee the whole package on cars because of the major problems incurred by the events referred to by Gary.
It has been a long drawn out exercise with Gary\'s car,I should have had the engine back over 1 year ago now!But we are sticking with it until it runs some fairly quick times.

Shame really cos it would have been good for a few of us if the work had been successfully completed when it was supposed to be.Gary\'s car would in all likely hood have been where Geffs and Ross\'s are now but over a year ago.

Anyway both myself and Gary have been stung but it is a good job we are patient.
Our time will come.
Kind regards
Carl

Hi Chris,

It makes a change to see someone who realises that to do it you need a reasonable amount of money.

Streight lines remind me of geometry, geometry reminds me of maths which reminds me of school.  Curves however...

Nice one Carl - would be good if you could encourage the person/team running the car to keep us updated.  I\'m sure there are plenty of people on here interested in this kind of thing.

Will that be a n/a engine?  I\'d imagine that for endurance running it\'d last quite a bit longer (or have the potential to) than a turbo\'d one due to heat issues?

Hi Iain,
It is a 12a running an IDA webber which the car is homologated to run,in other words it has to run as it was run in the late 70\'s and early 80\'s.
The car looks exactly as when Tom Walkinshaw and Pierre Duidogne raced it back then, complete with Moutl on it!
Kind regards

Phil Gooriah will be up and running again soon - look forward to some action from \'Animal\' soon. He\'ll be running an engine spec similar to Geff - and considering how good a driver Mr Phil is he should be scaring a few people on the track!! :D

I wish Phil all the luck, he is a top guy and deserves better. But what makes you think that a spec engine the same as Geffs will work this time. He has had approx 12 engines from Geff in the last 18 months - 2 yrs and not completed a race, they keep blowing up. Someone else who has parted with money and never had the goods delivered.

Engines blow up when you are developing - as Phil knows and appreciates; Geff and phil have a very good understanding and relationship between them - Phil wouldnt be as keen as ever if that were not the case. Making a reliable package takes development time and expense - and engines, as Tim, Carl et al appreciate I\'m sure; the MoTeC was an unknown that proved VERY(!) problematic  and with little support it was hard to get things sorted out with out trying, killing, rebuilding and trying again (you remember the first engine to go was Carls with Ianettis? so what chance did geffs motors have?). Thats how it is. 12 motors now is it?! I thought it was 7 the last time this came up?! I\'m sure some one is keeping count. Any way, hopefully with MicroTech or Power FC Phil will have a few racing miles under his belt... And as for money - Geff has presonally contributed thousands to their mutual cause in parts as well as hours - so please dont continue down that road.

Geff\'s engine has run over 2bar on several occassions (and will do so more now), done an unknown number of dyno and 1/4 mile runs and is putting out enough power to pull 11.11 at present - sub-10 very soon I\'m confident.

Regardless of your personal issues with the man, the fact of the matter is that at this point in time in the UK he\'s putting way more boost thru his motor than any way one else and is making more power than any one else on the dyno.

As Carl said the other day - prove your power at the strip; who else has an engine running 130+ mph in the quarter mile? No one, and the only others near are Tim and Ross - no one else has an engine close that I know of...

It\'s one thing to say I can, another to be able to say I have.

So does that mean that he used Phil & his money to develop an engine as Phil has not raced for 2 seasons, but has blown plenty of engines trying, how many engines has Geff blown developing his, and did he get to race them first.

Are you suggesting that Carls engines are superior to Geffs.

Geff may have put labour (which cost him nothing) and some parts, sometimes second hand. Into the project as he wanted his company name on it, but has not Phil built most of the engines now, whenever I have seen Phil down there he has always been working and building on his own while Geffs works on others, and has Phil not paid thousands to Geff for this service.

There could have been a car to beat Geff but he was not capable of finishing it.

Labour costs him nothing? if you tiled my bathroom for free - would that cost you \'nothing\' - on the basis that whilst tiling my bathroom you\'re not able to generate income from other customers - how\'s that free :rollin

How many times have u been to geff\'s and phil\'s been there? Engine building - I think he may have built one or two with guidance. Oh, hang on - does that mean thats 2 engines knocked off of the dead engines count? May be phil did build all of them then :)

Parts - you have no idea; Ask Phil how he thinks he\'s been treated by Geff and let us all know what he says, eh? Or I\'ll ask him next week when he\'s down for a couple of cans  Do you seriously think he\'d still be with Geff if he wasnt happy with him? May be theres just not any one else he fancies trying or thinks could do better??

I\'m under no illusion that there are other cars that couldve (can!) beat Geffs - Ross\'s I\'m sure will be a 10 second car any day now, Gary goodings could\'ve been/might be? Likewise Erdins and a load of others. Let\'s hope so as the only good thing that comes out of the bitching is that the competition gets stronger and UK Rotors get quicker, faster...

Ive sent my guys for free, if you have no work on a particular day or in the evening for friends. The web site you maintain and the domain you reg for Reworx, was that for free, or did you put a cost to that.

Several times I have seen him down there working, but if you now suggest he built all of them, what has Geff done.

So happy that at one time he was contemplating another marque of car or even a different engine in the RX. Until you or Geff talked him into spending some more.

Yes bitching can be good, lets others know what some people think of specialists, instaed of it all being hush, hush. Might stop someone else getting burnt.

How\'s your 3 rotor FD coming along, its been about 2 years down at Geffs hasnt it?
For someone who has no connection with Geff, a 2 year old  project thats way off being completed, PR man, web designer, domain reestrant, you seem to have you head far enough up his a8se.

Hi Rich,
It is important to get your facts straight about the engine that Phil ran with the Iannettis. My reputation is being wrongly brought into question here!

1.I did not and have never built Phil Gorriahs engine.Tim at RX motors did.I supplied the Iannetti\'s.

2. Geff fitted and tuned it to 491hp atw\'s.

3.It lasted considerably longer than all or most of the subsequent engines that have been so far built by Geff/Phil(Maybe the Iannettis held longer than steel apex seals). If you remember it did do one race and a whole day of very hard track day driving at Donnington in 491 atw hp tune, there is in car footage on MRC to prove it.If it had only done sprints then in all likelyhood it would have done quite a few races.
Remember that trackdays are usually 20 minute sessions,Sprints a couple of minutes at a time.(Maybe 3 or 4 in a day)

4. Many of the engines built later did not last more than a few hundred miles with steel apex seals(Mazda) and less power on some of them.

5.Well over 1 year is a long time to not compete because of so called development.

Kind regards
Carl

Looks like I don\'t have to log onto rx7club forum anymore for cheap entertainment. I tell you what why don\'t we see if we can get Jerry Springer on here to judicate.
Now some rotary gurus are more open than others about their engine failure some like to coverup their engine failures, some are honest enough to say I don\'t know about something some know everything already but fact remains that every rotary specialist in this country have one thing in commmon they have all built/tuned engines that have gone pop full stop. Some because of mistakes they made some not of any fault of their own but this basically puts everyone in the same boat the rest is down to personal preference.

Now back to the original topic. I know from speaking to the company that built my white car they have a 10.002 sec rx7 running 710 fwhp they pay particular attention to tuning the suspension for quick 1/4 mile times as well as the engine.
Having the suspension setup correctly can knock off considerable time. hence can have a 400+rwhp car running quicker than 500rwhp car over 1/4 mile if the former has better suspension tuning. So power itself is not evrything as far as 1/4 mile times are concerned.

Hi Brian,
I for one am in my own boat thanks!
I paddle my own canoe!
It is true that engines do go wrong from time to time,I know I have had my fair share.
(Robbie Calders 12000 miles,John Yorkes around the same i mileage believe,Clives over revved (cracked Apex seal found on disassembly) ,Gary Goodings wrong fuel pump, and a couple of others)all modded though.

One or two race engines have gone wrong, after winning overall championships though!

It is impossible for any engine to last forever unless they are never used.

It is downright wrong though to infer that we are all in the same boat,we all have differing knowledge and experience of rotaries and modding and tuning. That leads most definitely to various results.

This forum should have an area for customer results and satisfaction reports.I know if it did I would get some negative feedback, but hopefully it would give me the opportunity to resolve some issues that may have upset my customers, and get an idea how to improve my customer service and business.

Something that has disturbed me personally in the last few months is hearing of at least 3 cars that have had engines go wrong, and I reputedly have built their engines, only to find on investigation that I have had nothing to do with these cars,it is another builder who has done work on them.If you build engines then at least have the gut\'s to take instead of passing the blame for them when they go wrong!

Also when someone spends a very serious amount of money they rightly expect results, not a big mess. That is worth reporting on the forum to warn other customers.Especially if given the opportunity to fix their mistakes and they still stuff up.Either that or they should get their money back.

Kind regards
Carl

In your own boat or not the point is this has nothing to do with the the Guy\'s thread about the price of power. So if this is gonna turn into don\'t take your car there because x y z then maybe start a seperate thread on that but there is no point in posting further in this unless it\'s directed to the purpose of the thread.

(Robbie Calders 12000 miles,John Yorkes around the same i mileage believe,Clives over revved,Gary Goodings wrong fuel pump, and a couple of others).

How many revs is \'over revved\'? I have logged 10060 rpm,and I know I have revved it higher.

around 8800 rpm but the rev limiter was set too 8500 at the time.
It was prbably that which damaged the engine,a cracked tip that\'s all.no other damage.
12 a\'s can easily do 10,000 rpm, just warps the steel tips temporarily though!Until you run it in for a few miles again to flatten them. The carbon\'s and Iannettis can take 12500 rpm or more!
Kind regards

Which engine was that Carl? if a limiter was set at 8500rpm - then only a downchange could cause an over-rev couldn\'t it?

8800rpm isn\'t that many revs, even with 2mm steel seals? - sounds more like a tuning issue?

Hi Glenn,
Clive went up the strip early this year on a very mildly modded engine that I built him and was only mapped to 8000 rpm with the rev limter raised to 8500.mild porting and stock seal\'s with no clearancing.
Because of the gearing Clive was only a few meters from the line wanting to change gear but was instead holding it on the rev limiter just before and over the line.We reckon that the momentum of the car would have taken the revs to around that figure which was none too healthy for the engine. If the fuel was going on and off at those revs we reckon that is what caused the cracked apex seal.No other internal engine damage though.
If Clive changed to 4th gear his time was ever so slightly slower but his terminals were 7 or 8 mph more.
Anyway the engine has now been rebuilt and has over 2500 miles on it, and is waiting to be tuned. The new engine is highly modded, big porting and dowelled with Iannetti seals and should do well over 9,000 rpm.
Kind regards
Carl

Tim is quoting from me earlier.I built them.
The engines in question were not all hi-spec engines.
Gary Goodings being the most highly modded.

Hopefully that was an oversight :)

At the request of the president of the MRC I have re-merged this thread.

Sorry to our members/readers.

There appears to be the normal back patting of some friends, and trying to blame others.

*Do I get a prize for most pointless post ever?*

That is a very perturbing post. Support from MOTEC UK aside, if you cannot work out how to drive a high end ECU you should not be a dealer for it. PERIOD. There are also a few bits in the sale of goods and supply act that are potentially pertinent here.

I shall be contacting MOTEC about this, as being a dealer for them gives a certain cachet and an implied level of competency. This post clearly shows, direct from the horses mouth, that this competency is missing.

Bill - I said that about MoTeC from my view as a 3rd party of proceedings over the last however long. My opinion. Not Geff\'s. He is a MoTeC dealer I am not. Geff owns RE:Worx, I do not; Geff is a very good friend of mine, I spend a lot of my spare time (I work full time for a firm of chartered accountants) messing about at his workshop, learning as much as I can from the experiences it provides me, I help with admin chores and hand him the odd spanner. I\'m sorry that my loyalty toward him obviuosly comes across as suggesting that I am more involved than I am. Please dont confuse my posts/views as being those of Geff...

The fact of the matter is he is too busy to spend much time on here - like the other workshop owners who spend all day working on customers cars and speaking to people on the phone. I see alot of people go thru the workshop tho - and come back time and time again very happy. And I hear a lot of stuff from geff and other people in the business he speaks too daily - both some of which manifests itself in stuff I post on here some times...

Carl - Pod was excellent; I was very concerned about the gearbox after guys first run - but his second run was awesome - it looked fast, he got out of the box GOOD, I was so excited as the gears went in - 2nd, 3rd, 4th - I was willing them to go in sooo hard! I knew it was quick but when it came up 10.61 I was overwhelmed!! ran off to get the slip and find Guy, saw him a way off, punched the air and he did the same - it was a great moment :) I totally messed up recording the run in my excitement but I know a guy Guy knows was their filming has it on tape though so it should be about some time :)
