Title: Collapsing intake pipe?
Post by: JimboRX-7 on August 12, 2004, 08:31:42 PM
I\'ve got a serious lack of power on the second turbo, which gets worse the longer I drive the car.  Just after it\'s warmed up, everything seems almost fine, but 15 mins of driving hard, and there\'s not much there, despite showing full correct boost throughout the rev range.  I\'ve done some investigating and have found the hose in the picture is collapsing.  I can push it back into shape by hand, but drive it hard, and it collapses again.  I\'m guessing as I drive the car for longer the pipe is getting softer due to the increased temperature and collapsing further.

Does this sound plausible?

Does this pipe in the photo go to the primary or secondary turbo?

Does anyone know if this is a standard part?  Are uprated versions available?

Cheers...

James

yep i think that is probably the culprit. i would\'nt drive on it for too long as it will kill the engine due to leaning out if left uncured, i think that is the inlet hose to the second turbo but i can\'t really remember which is which!.
and yes that is a standard part as for uprated ones i do not know any paying vendors care to respond?

Guess I could test the theory by running without air filters...  Not keen on doing that though!

Wookie has it right, its the second turbo. The part is a standard part, which to my knowledge there is not an aftermarket version.

Guess its time to phone either a Mazda dealer or breakers.

Bobster is right, that is the hose to the primary turbo not the secondary.  If you are still getting full boost across the rev range then it cant be collapsing

Mine was all deformed when i got the car.  I replaced it with an intake elbow off a S13 200SX, perfect fit ;)

If you know the right sizes for it, Samco have a huge range of universal hoses that bend and such, that would probably fit.

Or you could try and dig up one of the Polished Aluminium hard pipe kits that sometimes appear on ebay. May work out cheaper than the standard part would be new.

As for the lack of power I have no idea. Would need to know more.

I\'ve just bodged the pipe to stop it collapsing, and it now maintains power even after a good 30 minutes of driving hard.

I\'m sure it was showing full boost when collapsed though    Maybe it\'s a question of how far it has collapsed?

I think I need to drive it some more before I can be sure everythings ok

Check ebay for a set of hard induction pipes from the US you will have to suck pretty hard to collapse one of those. Also I believe there is a bhp gain as the pipes are smooth n the inside and therefore more restrictive.

Remember there is only vacuum at this point in the piping there is no boost until after the turbo.

//www.m2performance.com has both the upper and lower intake hard pipes.

You could  (if you have the skills or know someone) save some money and make your own
