Title: 10 Second 3rd Gen?
Post by: cjle17 on August 12, 2004, 06:35:58 PM
Ok so here is a question that I would love to be answered in my quest for speed.

From the quarter mile times the top RX tuners in the UK are running 11.3 second quarter miles - which dont get me wrong is rapid.  However, my question is what are the main problems preventing an RX 3rd gen being tuned to run a 10 second quarter based around the two rotor engine?  Also is this within the reach of us mere mortals?

Is it feasable?  A question of money?  Or is it the problem of not being able to just run a 100 shot of NOS through the engine?

I would say it is more because we are behind the Aussies, Japs and Yanks on the development curve. You can look to those guys and find some seriously quick RX7s with 13b engines.

Takes time, money and mistakes to get there and us Brits are generally behind the US and Austrailia in most aspects of drag racing.

mad bridge port mad turbo go on a diet take everything out but i think dragons car ran in the very low 12s or even mid 11s at 500ish hp (thats a gues) and his car looked lighter than a salad so if my calculations are correct (scooby get a mad scientist with a calculator in hear asap) thats 250 more hp and allot less wight to get u 3 seconds of ur time

u could maby try this computer ive been reading about whare u jsut flore it and keep ur foot on the floor when ur chaging gear and it holds it at red line

there are cars with a lot less power than an FD running quicker times because they built for drag racing.  They have huge soft tyres, high soft suspension for maximum squat and traction and either solid diffs or very close to it,  if you want to build a car for drag then you will lose the crisp handling of the fd.  Skylines can manage both because of the 4wd.     You will find the Ross and geffs car could drive straight onto a track and hold their own and then straight back on the strip.

It is very much a case of money being spent by customers.
The old adage applies that "How fast you want to go depends very much on how much you want to spend."
The know how is here to do it,what is missing are the customers who want to do it enough to spend the money.
Kind regards

What would be really handy are ball park figures for the cost of getting a car to a certain standard, e.g. starting with a standard 3rd gen \'96, how much would it cost to make a reliable (non nitrous), great handling car putting down: -

300rwhp
400rwhp
500rwhp

note I said rwhp.

I\'m already saving hard :)

Edit : I\'m going to break this into a new thread as I think the answers would be very interesting.

That is a great idea to provide an idea of costs and mods required to get to those stages of output.

My main issue is why cant people like the RX tuning houses who have access to expert tuning knowledge and trade price parts produce a 10 sec car?

If you hold your breath long enough, you might see one on here tomorrow.  Geff is running at the POD with one aim in mind.  If you ask Jeff and Ross why they havent just gone and built a 10 sec car the will tell you the same as most of their customers............ Money. they still have to buy the parts and they small tuners so cant afford to spend the money or time just to go racing.

PS.  good luck geff

That about sums it up; most of the uk rotary guys are very small outfits with very limited reserves. They have to spend the majority of their time working on customers cars in order to pay the bills - and since there arent that many customers who are interested in having (paying for) a 10 second car its basically a case of doing it with their own cars with their own time and money...

Good luck to both Geff and Tim. Fingers crossed nothing breaks!!

Everything checked, tripple check and checked again on the "Purple Peril", the last couple of days have been fantastic, the first time Tim fired up the monster, all of us had stupid grins on our faces. You can feel the air 2 meters away resonating as the beast ticks over. I caught a brief glimps of him opening it up on the way home and it absolutely roars. Very little is exactly as Tim would like it, and that\'s where the "why isn\'t there a 10 second rotary in the UK?" question is answered; Tim spends next to nothing on his car compared to Jeff and Ross, but has a list longer than your arm of bits here and bits there that he knows are not 100%. But each of these things would take several hours to fine tune. Nobody pays Tim/Jeff/Ross, to tune and purfect their own cars, it\'s all for the love of competition and development. They all know how to make rotarys produce big power, it\'s just as Carl said... There aren\'t the customers asking for 10 second cars.

Just to point out there are not that many people at all who have built 10 sec Jap cars.

A few Skyline outfits (they probably have the easiest car to start with with traction).

Norris Evo, RC Evo, CRD, Fensport, another Scoob and Maybe a couple of other Supras.

Thats not a big collection really.  (I realise Im bound to have forgotten a couple).

Even though Tim has done his car on a relatively low budget, it must be taken into consideration that Tim has spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on his car that any paying customer would not be able to afford unless very wealthy. That is how Tim has reached his goal over quite a few years.
All most people see is the result, but not the times and heartache when everything has gone wrong and had to be redone and also the incremental improvements that he has carried out over the years.
Both myself and Tim have been going to the drag strip for many years having alot of fun.It is only more recently that things have gotten serious.
And that is a good thing.
The rotary builders and tuners have now got competitive which has pushed things along quite rapidly in the past 2 years.
I wish both Tim and Geff all the best in their quest to break into the 10\'s.
I hope to be there with them soon.
Kind regards
Carl
