Hi Guys,
I came on the forum a while ago and was looking for my first FD, after a look search it's finally done and I picked up the new love of my new just over a week ago! Some pictures attached for what I hope is viewing pleasure, it's a standard 1993 RX7 that was bought in the UK meaning I had no problem with insurance since it isn't an import! Only cost me £1000 to insure and I'm 21!
Just thought I would drop in and share my new car I'll be searching the forums because I have a lot to ask and find! Some of which I haven't found yet so if anyone could point me to the post or shed light on it that would be fantastic!
I'm looking to change the headlamps to led and the rear plate lamps as well, I've looked and found the rear plate ones but for the headlamps I can't seem to find anything! Also anyone seen an FD with wind deflectors I literally cannot find a single photo or item to buy cause I want to se if they look okay!
Cheers Guys and I'm glad to finally be part of the Rotary Nation!

Nice, looks clean!
:welcome: to the MRC.
Wow, the paintwork on your FD looks amazing. A really clean looking car you acquired there. Hope you'll bring it along to a show/event sometime, for us to drool/dribble over ;)
Lovely mate, and welcome.
Been around FDs for over 8 years and ive never seen an fd outside japan with model specific wind deflectors. Some have modified other model deflectors to fit but ive only seen one car with what "looked" like factory wind deflectors and that was at a motorsport event in tokyo.
Cheers guys, yeah paintwork was redone in 2007 but has some slight blistering on the right front side from the engine bays heat! Overall it's in lovely condition and still has the jack and wheel removal kits in the boot!
Not to bothered about getting deflectors just never seen them on an FD and wanted to check if I liked the look because I had them on my Grande Punto!!
My favourite part of the car is probably the plate. It came on the car but I'm trying to think of ways to make it sound like I bought it haha!! RX (Car) 27 (My Birthday) and then 61 (I have no idea)! Maybe someone can thing of an RX7 connection with 61!! Haha!
Was just driving, fairly relaxed not really pushing past 3-4k rpm and suddenly the red light came on to add coolant and the temperature shot up to high.
I stopped straight away as I was just 20 metres from my friends house i could hear bubbling and gurgling with steam coming out the overflow tank beside the drivers headlight and a pool of what I assume is the coolant being dumped on the floor.
Any idea what this could be?
Hi mate. Goona need to fill plastic and metal reservoirs to full. Re run and look for leaks. Poss coolant leak to low level . 1 is a rad cap pressure spring 1 is just a cap. Dont mix em up.
There is a champayne test youtube will show you how after youve refilled if leak not obvious.
Just to clarify the champayne test is an engine seal test if you find no external leaks. Refill system cabin on hot and idle car fill both tanks.
Nice one Craig! Saw this for sale, lovey car
Where abouts are you? My fellow 21 year old
Cheers Boosted, I did the champagne test was getting a couple of very tiny bubbles when turning the car on and they slowed when the car was running after a few seconds with the water up to the neck. So don't think it's seals (I hope)!!!
I'm in Newcastle Alexsavv, it's lovely I'm completely in love with it but it's giving me headaches after just a few weeks haha! I knew it would be the death of any hopes I had of moving out before 25 but not this quickly!
Sounds fine then on engine. Check the hoses for leaks and check them caps. Also get it up to temp and check fans cutting in.
The fans didn't cut in just checked, they come on a long time after from what I can see. But they do come on? Maybe the thermostat isn't telling the car it's hot until it's way to hot to do anything with!
I'll check hoses and caps tonight, thank you! (:
WooHoo, another one in newcastle, its been a while i can tell you. Croft trackday on the 28th Aug if you fancy a day out be nice to see another rotary there
Woo! Good to know there is people around here, how good are you with coolant leaks?
I would really love to come but the car isn't in top condition at the moment. With the coolant leaking and the possibility of overheating in the engine I don't think tracking the car would help my issues atm!
I'm also getting slight hesitation through the Rev range, still pulls like a train but I can't help but feel I'm missing the full potential. Only way I can describe it is it feels like wheel spin and the revs get stuck, happens sometimes and not others it's doing my head in!
make sure caps on right. Need to check all hoses for splits and leaks and again check the rad core itself. The thermostat is purely a mechanical device that opens when hot 80 ish deg to allow coolant to flow from engine to rad...id remove both caps...idle car and slowly fill both reservoirs until she takes no more fluid. put lids on and allow to heat up and pressurise system. was pressure up and thermostat open if you have an external leak id should be obvious.
keep 1 eye on the temp gauge and if it get too hot i.e after half way shut down....and allow to cool...this would then be prudent to check thermostat by removing and attaching a peice of string and boiling in pan of water...should pop open. if not ....replace.
sniff the exhaust ....and check for vapour and sweet smell ( coolant).
this car got an apexi ecu? ifso you can monitor temps on the hand held commander.
If you remove the plastic ducting and intercooler you can inspect bottom rad hose and back of radiator.
also if you have aircon turn it on and fans should cut in.
thats me off the top of my head.
but if it gets hot shut down to protect the coolant seals.
I'm not at my car atm but from the looks of it the caps are on the wrong way...
I didn't think of that because I never took them off together always one at a time then back on.
With no spring the wrong tank is pressurised and that's why the water is probably being forced out because there is no pressure.
I'll have a look and then post if it was that way round!
If thats case then you in good company because when i had my fd....i did this to mine and forced all my coolant out....hair pulling running around arrggghhh!!! hope this is the case ! fingers x'd
also press cap could be failing...same as mx5! had that as well! and i had an mx5 at the time as well and swapped em problem shifted to mx5!
Seems like they were the wrong way and I have had 0 issues and have just took the car for a good spirited run and got it up to speed with a couple of redlines and seems like no problems!
Got a slight hesitation at about 3k still which could be the common problem people seem to have with the FD!
Thanks again boosted hopefully that's the last as I started it before and had 0 bubbles if I could add a video I would because I had the caps off letting it run and it looks fine!
Warming from a cold start, is this a normal idle to allow the car to heat up?
Just a small video will upload another of the caps!!
https://vimeo.com/134142919 (https://vimeo.com/134142919)
Slightly overfilled it but just pushed some out with my finger, one more video know I've uploaded a couple now but just a running list I'll add to this as my own thread!!
https://vimeo.com/134143066 (https://vimeo.com/134143066)
Last one from today, just it running and then I go round the car a little bit just to hear the exhaust see if it sounds okay and then as it was pretty much warm just to show no leaks from the bottom as the water was just from overfilling and the levels keeping nicely. I hope it was just the wrong cap placement!!
https://vimeo.com/134143239 (https://vimeo.com/134143239)
First video was warm, sorry just showing 3k revs for the engine oil pressure! (:
Cant see them vids on works pc! ill look tomoz. Glad its looks sorted at mo.
I uploaded them off my phone so hopefully they work properly on PCs etc as I uploaded through tapatalk!

I'm at work till early August but I'm always happy to have a look and help if I can mate.
That would be great! Thanks Neil, whenever you are free I'm happy to meet up and see if you can help!!
I'm on a course next week so in working as well so whenever suits you if possible!
Changed the caps and the dreaded light has came back on to add coolant! In so confused as you can see from the videos no bubbles or anything!!
What else can it be? The fans don't seem to cut in I've heard them come on but they aren't on very often!
Had even more stuttering in the rev range again, will have to see if anyone from Newcastle and on here can diagnose a problem for me to fix hah!
Neil I'll definitely need to take you up on the offer also wouldn't be bad to come see a fellow RX7!!
Was one cap plain and the other with a spring under it?
if so swap em back also have a good look at the rubber seals up inside the cap, if these look worn or cracked it would be best to renew anyway
Just took it for a drive to see if It was sorted and it isn't! I rev'd it and it was stopping and popping through the whole rev range! No idea what the problem is now, it feels more and more like it's going to be a rebuild. But the video shows I have no bubbles I get a little puff of white smoke when I start the car first thing and it's cold but it's literally the first second then nothing.
Hopefully when I see Neil he can shed some light!
Thank you for the reply Clive, Yeah one had a plain and one had a spring I put them on the way they are on the picture boosted put up for me so hopefully they are fine now (:
Okay this could be the problem, it said add coolant so when I got home straight away popped the hood to steaming from the left hand side I was confused at first since it wasn't the usual overflow tank steaming. Instead it was coming from here, which to me is even worse and I'm more worried now than ever because this has never happened yet.
Anyone shed any light?
https://vimeo.com/134247171 (https://vimeo.com/134247171)
So its not losing coolant now? But not running right? Bad misfire?
Bottom rad hose is down there....think ic gotta come out and check that hose and bottom of rad.
On the AST the plastic reservoir with the sprung cap. If the spring is lifting then coolant will be flowing from AST in the small pipe....need to see that this little pipe is feeding onto plastic overflow....and not flowing down where your leak is.
Ic out AST out and inspect not crack...bottom rad hose and rad core need to be checked.
It wasn't losing coolant but then the light came on so it must be getting out somehow because I was only driving and it was definitely full up. Not running right still doing my head in, yeah I think it was bad misfiring as well! Haha I knew it would be an ongoing project!
Okay I'll check the IC (Intercooler) and Rad (Radiator) hoses tomorrow, it's fine going slow and not pushing but as soon as I push it started to misfire but that was the first time.
AST (Air separation tank)?
Correct me if I'm wrong with the abbreviations still learning!!!
The plastic ASTs are renowned for cracking as are the plastic end tanks on the standard radiator. A bit of white smoke on first start up in no problem as it will be condensation in the exhaust. in the cold months mine pumps out white smoke for the first minute and always has.
First things first check your hoses are on tight and have no small cracks, coolant gets to around a bar of pressure when hot so it will easy push through loose clamps or tiny cracks in the end tanks and/or the AST.
From your video it looks like you have a crack somewhere in your radiator which is easy done by a stone because of how its mounted diagonally below your ic.
AST - air sep tank mate
if your light came on your losing coolant somewhere mate, either into the overflow, on the road, or worse into the block.
I know and my gut is telling me it'll be the block because I have had the worst patch of luck in my life for the past month and I thought things could only get better.. How wrong I was!
Yeah sorry I missed tank off the end of that so thanks!
Yeah must be a crack somewhere I'll have a good look tomorrow but I need to drive to work it's only 8 miles there and back so I'll take a 2l bottle of water with me incase I need to refill for the coolant. The amount of water I'm adding could be diluting the mixture to much so when I have it all sorted I'll bleed and refill the system properly if I can find somewhere to get the car off the floor!
Not sure if it's a standard radiator but I will look in the receipts pile and see when hoses and the radiator were checked or changed. I have the receipts back to purchase of car in 1993 so I'll find something haha!

I know and my gut is telling me it'll be the block
Thats hopefully just rotary paranoia pal, we have all been there. even the slightest thing wrong can make these cars look like immenent doom. Ask anyone that has had the map sensor pipe blow off, or a dead spark plug and it feels very much like an apex seal has gone.
Haha, well I'll have a good look over it. Meant to drive it to York next Monday for a work course and if I can't find a problem by then I don't know what I'll be doing! Bugger it all haha! Sleep time now up at 6 for work, this car won't beat me though I'll make it run right even if it kills me!!
The leak is right by the eccentic shaft position sensor....this runs the engine.( bottom engine pully with timing indexes on sensor at 2 oclock ) Id check this for water in the plug also. Give it a good clean up and spray out with electric cleaner or wd40.
This could be your misfire if only doing when leaking....i would not recommend driving mate til sorted could lose the engine.
No misfire this morning, but I didn't take it above about 3k rpm as I needed it for work. It seems to be as it gets further up the range
Okay, so drove back from work. 50 the whole way back in cruise control and no problems. I pulled up and could hear steam again so I've investigated it seems that the water was coming from the power steering plastic bottle to start with.
But then I looked further and what I could see made my gut totally drop the water is coming from underneath the engine block I think. It's just hissing and spitting from that area not really leaking but changing the caps did stop the water leaking from the overflow so that problem is solved. I don't think anything I loose but I will wait until it cools down to start touching things again.
Neil, is there anyone around here that deals with rotaries just that I can take to have a look at it this weekend sometime. Instead of my trial and error approach at the moment.
Thing is, as long as I'm not pushing the car past 4k it has no problems driving, I'm thinking I don't have enough money for a rebuild right now so maybe buy a reconditioned engine to see me okay for a year or so if the block is the problem. I blew what I had saved up on this car, in hopes that I would have 6-8 months as my pay has went up now and that would get me 3-4k cash saved to fix it in future but at this rate it's going to be gone before August is out by the looks of it

here comes a bank loan!
Thanks for the help guys I really do appreciate it, maybe getting an RX7 as a daily driver wasn't my best move

https://vimeo.com/134315315 (https://vimeo.com/134315315)
Hi mate so its on the passenger side? Difficult to see....just remove the ic you can get down there for a decent look.....the waterpump entry and bottom rad hose is down there.
Off boost your not generating heat. With heat comes pressure....this looks like a split hose to me . Your gonna kill it bud if you continue to drive it....start stripping tonight and get a taxi to work tomoz ?
I wondering if the coolant drain plug is loose or the cooper washer is split....its on this side of engine low down. 12mm hex bolt....google image it bud cant put a linky on me phone.
No bother I'll see if I can get a lift off my brother tomorrow for work then and I'll find a way to get back home somehow!
I'm not a huge mechanic myself so hope I don't take off something I can't put back on, I said this would be my learning car haha
Simples mate plastic duct of first...loosen hose clamps 12 and 10 mm on a socket set should doit. Lift out ic and squeeze bottom rad hose ....get a torch in there leak that size should be obvious....id check that drain plug first.....
Okay I'll check the drain plug first then, I'll get my socket set out and give it a good look over!!
that handsome devil is NOT me!
good luck IC is aftermarket so hopefully bolts not ceased.
Leaking from left hand hose with the red clip a bit (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/23/84ca42abe43366e26148b65f08af429b.jpg)
Sweet ! well done....think thats the feed for heater matix or throttle body dont matter anyway???? nice cheap easy fix. can you get it off> need some 8mm hose from any motor factors or if its the jubilee clip? undue the jubilee and pull the pipe off..strip jubilee or split pipe!!!!! easy peasy cheap.
Here we go, as soon as I turned the car off it just comes out like a normal pin hole leak. I can't quite get to it so any tips on getting into it as I can't put the car up on a ramp and do it I'm working over the top of the car!
Won't be driving it until I fix it as brother is taking me to work!
Hope you are right but would this cause my issues?
https://vimeo.com/134348475 (https://vimeo.com/134348475)
It's just squirting out sideways haha, my voice is a bit crap on videos but was I right? Sounds like the plastic components cooling down its from the driver side of the engine not in the engine like the parts beside it.
The cap change fixed the water leak at the other side and I think because I had no cap keeping the pressure in the system since they were the wrong way round so there wasn't enough to cause the leak to be prominent!
soz mate was posting over in chit chat....easy way is to take the large metal intake pipe off connecting to throttle body...couple of 10mm domed nuts. should give good access then.
Well, that's a relief, at least it's not looking too serious and should be cheap to fix. Access looks a bit of a pain though!
3 elbows and witches fingers spring to mind.
Hey man sorry been off shift. There is no one i would take my car too any closer than chester way which is Pip at WGT but that a 200mile drive for me i personally use Powergains in essex. Us north east lads generally have to look after ourselves. Ive been left pretty much on left on me Jack Jones since Bobbit and EnvyD both sold theirs years ago.
Glad to see you have found you water leak, You need to take the black plastic elbow off which is that bolt right at the top of your pic and 3 others all very visable. Dont worry getting the space there is fairly straight forward, then replace that hose and possibly clean up and check that now corroded pipe. Looking at the pic it looks like the jubilee isnt even secured around the pipe and looks to have slipped up the hose so possibly a nip up could potentially fix you up.
As for your missfire if the water is squirting out there is like spraying all over you leading plugs and possibly the coils. Fix the leak and prove it by getting it warmed up then let everything dry out. -----Take the negative off the battery------ then give a good squirt of WD around that area and let it dry again then give it a go and cross your fingers.
Right guys thanks for the help. I'll try and get some new hose from somewhere not sure of autoparts places near me but I'll definitely give it a good go! I'll need to find some tools as well my dad isn't to well equipped for this sort of thing. He has new cars every few years and his Audi hasn't had a single fault yet haha. Although it's nowhere near as fun
Yep, that will be the problem then, well found :)
Went to the only place I know that sells car parts and they don't have anything for my car! God damn it!
LOL you need a radiator hose for an astra your sorted, now a 20yr old japanese sportscar that 90% of people cant name stood right in front of one Hmmm.
One of the guys breaking one on here will sort you out, put up a wanted post. alternatively try mazdarotaryparts, jimmysrx7, TRWorx (email him first for a decent price) other than that the tuners usually have spares. Powergains, WGT, Haywards, reworx etc.
Another choice is to just measure the hose ID and just buy a length and cut it to suit. (this is probably what i'd do)
If there not enough slack on the hose to cut the bit with the pin hole out and then just re-attach the hose, If anything it should get you going.
I do recommend a morning with a tuner though. I put up with little niggles for nearly a year before i first went to a tuner, took a mate had a night on the lash, car all sorted and mapped by dinnertime the next day, pub lunch and a great drive home. A few hundred quid and worth every penny.
Which tuner did you go to? I might have to go down to one as the car really needs some looking at to be fair, think I may have bought a dud. It's pretty paintwork and my instant love may have swayed my decision but I'm sure once it's all sorted I'll be happier than ever. Driving it at 2k rpm makes me smile, probably made a mistake buying one before doing a really good check of the car but I drove it and it was fine I didn't blast it about since it wasn't mine at that point. I get paid on Tuesday while I'm in York so I think a day off when I get back and take it to the guy beside me that used to service them for an importer on the coast to get his opinion.
What do you mean measure the hose ID? If I could buy it i would but not sure where to go buy it haha. Any ideas Neil?
I use Powergains in essex but have used wgt in chester too. Any of the rotary experts out there will be able to sort you out. If you just want someone local you could take it to Jurgen at JM imports as he imports loads of them and runs a very professional company and will no doubt be able to sort most things for you( I recently used them for fitting my downpipe/tyres etc). For mapping and/or rebuilds etc then stick with the tuners as im sure Jurgen would agree as i dont believe he caters for those services anyway, could be wrong mind!. JM imports is just around the corner from me in Cramlington.
By the hose ID i mean measure the width across the inside of the hose, Internal Diameter. Then buy a length the same most motor factors could help but deffo ebay/ASH/hose techniques etc
change the .9 bar pressure cap on the ast as it sounds like it is faulty.....hth thanks
ignore me....for some reason i could only see page 1 of your thread...now on page 5 lol...
Haha no bother
Okay so hose is fixed and I don't get any leaks. Took it to Mazda and they out the coolant system under pressure for free and checked it over which I thought was good (probably just their normal service but I was happy and they were friendly) but I'm still somehow losing coolant or the light is acting up.
Anything it could be?
The coolant level switch is a common failure so if confirmed levels arent dropping should just be that.
Hey mate, how you getting on? I can pop over at some point for a look and a banter if you like. I'm away for a week from Sunday but anytime else this month is fine.
Drop me a message mate I'll give you my number.

He won't be able to do that Neil, as only Full Members have Private Messaging available. But I see your email link on the left is active, so he should be able to use that OK :)
Ah ok cheers Casey
Hey guys, think it may of just been the water getting through the full system warm as the level has sat quite steady now.
I'll email you now Neil!
Picture added to show what the problem was haha. It was rather snapped I took the clips off and it just fell apart. Was quoted £192 off Mazda and the part was £12 with 20 minutes work

Can't get the email as I'm logged in on my phone but I will get on a computer today and send you one through!
No worries mate, that hose looks well shot and if a water house is that bad I'd be pretty sure some of the vac hoses will be pretty hard and cracked too.
Give them all a good check if you can twist them and they turn on the nipple then they are not tight enough.
Right, bigger problem now. I was driving back from dropping my brother off tonight and the back right tyre has blown. The car spun and I tried to stop it I wasn't going fast but since it's raining I couldn't slow down hit a fence and it's cracked both the back lights and pushed the bumper up into the boot on one side. How can I get the bumper off or open the boot as it won't open now!
It's not incredibly bad, I think back bumper and both tail lights but I'm more shook up than anything never had a crash or bump. Thankfully nobody else was involved and nobody was hurt. Just a bit of a wake up call for the £400 it'll probably cost to buy the parts!
Main thing is your alright....getting rear bumper of is a bit of faff. 10mm nuts down behind the lights
Fair bit of trim inside boot to remove to gain acces..if the boot not opening may have to climb through and pop the catch from inside. Or have some pull up whilst pulling lever.
Right, I'll have a look tomorrow just sitting on the drive is it okay to leave it there?
Looking on Jimmys Mazda it's £175 for a bumper and the rear lights come with it is it worth buying as I'll need all 3 and can get it resprayed by a friend when it's here
Sad to hear this has happened but pleased your OK
seems like a good price....put a wanted thread below though as somebodys bound to have 1 in a shed. piccys would help us determine damage. If the boot not opening would suggest more than just bumper and the rear panel has moved.
Shit man that's awful news, but as long as your not injured and a rear bumper and lights is at least an easy repair. Front ends with pop ups is a mare.
Hope you get sorted quick fella
Getting sorted guys, got a family friend that's going to give it a proper check over make sure nothing more is damaged but I can still drive the reliable fiat around so car can stay in his garage to do as and when he wants. Once I know what I need I may post for parts but he said the bumper isn't that badly damaged and could potentially be fixed as he works mainly in frames, bodywork and respraying so should be in good hands for me car.
May just need the 3 lights so could potentially be much cheaper then I thought as long as the frame is okay! (:
Check the boot floor mate as this will rust in no time if there is any damage
Right no bother I'll make sure to check it!
Said it needs to go on a jig to straighten the panel but not sure if the back can be saved as he doesn't work on or with jigs. So going down tonight there is a car repair place with a jig shop near my house so will see what they think and if I need a new panel then that's what I'll have to do!
Jig seems abit "serious" mainly for aligning chassis....pop a picture up mate.
I only have one picture, I didn't take many and as I am storing at dads friends garage and now a bodyshop I haven't taken more, sorry life is being a tad hectic.
I think it's just because it's pushed the fenders out a bit but it's at a bodyshop with a jig now so hopefully they will see what they can do.
I thought to start with it was just the lights and bumper with a hole no incredibly serious damage was done. But it seems a bit more damage was done!
Pop the boot and get an acro prop in there... should could back out a treat... rear qtrs ok?
Boot won't pop, not sure why. Tried the pull but now I've assumed it might of sheered with the impact as the lock is gone, the quarters aren't damaged but they might be pushed out slightly from what I can see and suspect.
Thankfully the boot and the glass are in tact as I imagine they would be expensive.
Go to the shop tomorrow 11:30 and he said he will give me a run down of the job and how much it will cost. Hopefully when he gets the bumper off it won't be to bad and he will just say bumper fix and pop it back into place! But I'm holding out for big bucks as the rear panel feels like it's shifted. Not by any means a body mechanic so will see what the say! I'll keep you posted tomorrow thanks Boosted!! (:
Got the boot open, unfortunately where it has hit has caused a bit of damage. Fortunately it is all fixable.
All I need to do is supply the lights and he will fix the rest up and respray the bumper and the quarters where is has done a small amount of damage.
So hopefully my wanted post gets me the lights a bit cheaper as ebay seems to be selling them for £70 a light and £30 for the bar but I saw them with a bumper for under £200. So we will wait and see!
Not to bad then in the end.
Not to bad, mum isn't too happy with the costs but can't do anything about that now! My fault my cost!
Had some money spare for a rebuild but I'll just use it for the repairs, I want the car back the way it was at any cost!! (:
Forgot to ever get back to here! Car is all sorted, I got him to do all the outside work that could be seen with the car parked up. Which tbh wasn't as bad as it seemed once the boot was up. I think I may need a new rear hatch but that's only if I want the inside of the boot lid to be 100% which at the moment doesn't bother me! So he's all good again, the first day I got him back he got a nice few redlines to wake up after a couple of weeks on the car hospital!
Cool all good in the end...just take it careful. Weathers on the turn now. id recommend an alignment check on a 4 wheel laser alignment machine at any good tyre place to check all in Green. Plus what tyres on rear? These cars are usually very planted.
:) Great news - but as said, be careful now as the roads will increasingly remain damp and cold throughout the day.
