Title: Exhaust/leaness issues
Post by: Brett on August 12, 2004, 01:04:54 PM
I\'ve read a few posts saying that if a rex is decatted then the fueling needs to be seen to in order to avoid lean running.

 I\'m assuming thats correct?

If so how much damage/reduced engine/turbo life will it have caused?  (Car has 38k on the clock, done about 300 miles in the last 9 months, dont know what it did in Japan or how long the exhaust had been on there)

The exhaust is a Trust system.

Can anyone shed any light before I spend my hard earned £££ ?

 Thanks in advance.

Brett, the best thing you can do is take it to a rolling road, and get them to check it out.

You need to be seeing rich fuelling for most types of driving. If not you should just be able to fit an uprated fuel pump and that should cure an problems.

The closest place to you would be Abbey Motorsport on the A25 Oxted.

Cheers.   Sadly got to get the car off of the channel islands first before getting it back to sunny ol\' five oaks!

is it not more a case of the ECU not telling it to fuel enough surely just the fuel pump would be kinda like a manual way of gettign enough fuel there? NB i know jack just thought it was more a thing with the ECU controlling how much (ie enough) fuel was going in......

***Update***

I actually got to take it out last night on a proper test drive, in the day light.  Now to me it didnt look or sound like a straight through exhaust, but then I\'m used to my stooopidly loud Egi (Two lengths of pipe, no silencers)which may sound different from a turbo, it was spitting and popping lots on the overrun/gear change etc.

So, if its not a striaght through system, but CAT back I dont have to worry, right?

If it is a straight through Job (I will find out for sure when he lets me get it up on the jacks this weekend) then I\'ll need to go to a rr and check the AFR etc.

It were quick tho\' :cool
Title: Running Lean !!
Post by: eatmyrx7dust on August 13, 2004, 08:45:46 AM
Running lean increases the chance of \'Dentonantion\' in the rotor housing. This usually occurs in colder weather at full boost when experiencing boost spike.
If you have a boost gauge, this phenomena is easy to see.
\'Detonation\' occurs when a hot spot developes on the rotor and ignites the fuel wave in the wrong direction. Car usually shudders and losses power, also about a 25% chance of tip failure.

Sorry, didn\'t mean to scare anybody !!

Cheers from the warning Adrian,

I was aware of the detonation problems, so was taking it easy, checking for poor compression and clutch slip etc.

i wonder if mine did this at rotorstock , red line in second , into 3rd and got nothing - no power , no boost , no revs

backed off and then put my foot down again - and every thing was fine :)

was it detonation , or something else ????

Brett, for £40 or so you get peace of mind. I wouldnt be pushing an imported car, until I knew that things were ok.

Precisly (spelling?)

Luckily I know its not been thrashed as theres no where to thrash it over here!

Was considering just coasting it back from Guernsey at about 60mph,  should be well off of the boost at low rpm.

Talking of detonation,  I had detonation on my previous rebuild (Egi), at around 7200rpm on a mapping run the engine almost felt like it had stopped dead, there was an almighty bang out of the pipes a half second later and very poor compression until I rebuilt it (again).  I\'ve since modified the AFM to run about 2 levels higher (richness) and all seems fine this time around (egi\'s done 12k on this engine with no troubles)

sounds like i was very lucky them ( maybe - if thats what it was - there was no bang though )
