Hi guys,
Got a fd 96, it's breathing abit of oil into the intercooler so was planning on putting in a breathable catch tank. My car is stock twins and has a v mount intercooler, from research I've read I can install a catch tank from the second nipple facing down on the oil filler neck. Now what I wanted to know is, do I connect that straight to the catch tank if so what do I do with the pipe that is already connected to the filler neck, the catch tank has 2 holes for the pipe to go in, so 1 will go in on 1 side what about the other side shall I leave it open to air. Also the other nipple on the oil filler neck (top one) that is already been block off is that alright or does it need to go somewhere?
Thanks guys!
Jot,
You have answered your own question on where to connect and where to vent,
This is a get around a problem but it should help
Hope this helps,

Hi Clive,
Hope all is well, so what do I do with the pipe that's originally connect to the oil filler neck? Also the other hole on the breather tank shall I leave it blank.
Thanks
Jot,
Any help..
Hi mate if you google it theres some drawings...i did try and post a link a few days back but it flatlined.....vacuum line into tank tank to oil filler. Just need to choose wether vent to atmosphere or not.

Hi boosted, so one line from oil filler neck to the catch tank, and the line that comes off the oil filler neck do I connect that to the catch tank or block it? The catch tank I will be buying is a vented catch tank.
Thanks
Jot,
Hi mate if vented then the vac line that went to the nipple on the oil filler neck needs to be plugged a bolt slid in till the hex head will do the job perfect. On the 8 oil surge up the oil filler neck is common with sustained high revs but never had an issue when i had my 7. personally i prefer the unvented method then all the breather system is as intended and idle control is not screwed up all youve effectively done is add a vacuum chamber to catch the oil. If plugging causes the idle to race then i would plumb to tank so catch tank is under vacuum and plug the breather.
a little oil in the intercooler pipes is normal though every turbo car ive ever owned ive seen oil in the pipes....how much you getting?
hope that helps.

Hi,
Okay so now I know I have to block it, but as your saying if I go unvented then the line that comes of the oil filler neck connect that to the catch tank and run a line from the catch tank to the oil filler neck? Am I right? And your saying that will work better? I don't mind either way I haven't brought my catch tank yet but from what I've read up everyone recommends vented as the car is tracked. I've got a v mount so where the 2 pipes are connected with jubilee clips oil is dripping out very slightly but occurs after 5 mins of driving, I haven't had a chance to take the intercooler out to see if there is a puddle inside but wouldn't be happy to install a catch tank as it does not seem to be very hard, but just want to make sure.
Thank You
Jot,
if vented then either way run a line back from tank to that pipe or block. just check your idle. like i said i prefer unvented as does not screw with breather lines pressures.
...however does seem like a lot of oil for such a short time and wonder whether not oil surge but a worn turbo bearing.

this a good write up.

Hi boosted,
I've read this page before it is a good write up, he has got what I exactly want but what I wanted to know is vent the 2nd hole on the catch tank or connect it to the line coming from the pri turbo, but he has left it vented and capped the pri turbo line, but your saying if I block it then check my idle. I'll prob do what he's done but just do it from the 2nd nipple on the oil filler neck.
Thank you boosted.
Jot,
Hi mate yes id do as he has done. Never installed 1 on my 7 but have on my westie and my daily 8 engined car and my piston track car. Just wanted to cautionary note that pulling lines off may effect idle and to look out for as solving 1 problem and introducing another would be frustrating.
Your gonna need to keep an eye on the tank when on track as if it fills it leak out the fillter on the catch tank. Both nipples on the filler will see oil when in surge scenario just think they both need to go to the tank.
On my westie the catch tank is significantly higher than filler nipple with a long run so when it does surge it has a long way to run up the line to the tank. And after surge most runs back down the line into the sump.
Would be good if another tracker with an fd has complete solution could post. ?
Good luck

Yeah I probably will just connect the pri turbo line to the catch tank and the oil filler neck to the catch tank, but you said to connect both oil filler necks to the catch can, the top nipple on mine is block with a bolt and I can't see any sign of all dripping out. So shall I leave it like that? Also I will mount it higher than the oil filler neck but just need to find space lol. Yeah but no one has replied and will just prob see how it goes once I order it, hopefully can get it done soon as I might be going Bedford in March.
Thanks boosted!
I think a bit of trial and error is required. If you suss it then you can help others in the future. Can you mount the oil catch tank up in the corner by the brake servo? I home made mine from a spun aluminium drinks flask 99p from lidls. Works a treat.

Hi boosted,
Yes their is abit of space near the brake servo, but will that be a bit far or will that be okay? I will get the dimension of the catch tank that I'm going to buy and see if it will go there, if not then I'll have to try another place or possible different tank.
Thanks

Also shall I leave the top nipple blocked? Or get a connect 2 to 1 so I can't connect both lines to one hole of the catch tank?
Thanks
Servo great spot nice long line so oil may not make it to tank and flow back into sump...might as well leave blanked.
