Title: How much for a 27 year old
Post by: Iain C on August 10, 2004, 12:39:22 PM
My quest to own a rex on a budget takes me to insurance!
Ive been quoted £1200 by tesco and i think that is far to high esp as as its only for 4000 miles a year.
It would be used as a weekend use only car. Is anyone else in the same situation?
Wot do you guys think is a fair price?
Many thanks.
Iain

All i can say is give houghton a ring, plus if you can stretch the budget a little more then get a runaround as the first car. Im paying about 700 for both my cars insurance and im only 25 !
about 420 for the rex and about 300 for a pug 106 deisel.

Even on a standard policy houghton are good, plus tescos will hit you very hard for mods and probably want you to fit a tracker which is more cost.

Yeah tesco wanted a tracker....Think they are about £500 !
£450 is outstanding mate. I\'ll give em a try

Houghton declined to give me a quote as i have too many mods, although my bhp is only 18 more than a standard car. :(

yep as a 27 year old fella i\'m using the AON deal this year as it worked V well for me with other motor garage & such like so i\'m paying far less for both cars this year than i was on a UK scooby last year (http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/edoom/biggrinbounce2.gif)

I cant understand why they would decine to give you a quote on one with only 18bhp more than standard. When i got my quotes ( quite a few from houghton) they gave me a quote for 1100 for a 550bhp single turbo with all the trimmings. Like full roll cage, bodykit and alloys.

Is it a case that its too young a rx7, i think they only offer the classic insurance for rx7 over 10 years old, is that the problem ???

Is the area your in a bad crime area, or have you no noclaims, or a couple of accidents ??

Seems odd they wont quote.

I got a quote from Privelage for £820, 26b yr old, 5000 miles, as a 2nd car.

I havent got around to looking everywhere yet so i hope to trim that by a couple of hundred.

As i said give houghton a ring, surely they can give you a really good quote. They made my ownership of a rex possible :)

Whats the number for Haughton insurance?

My lowest quote so far on a modded FD is with Tesco at £1260 FC
I\'m 25 with 6 yrs NCB, they didn\'t want a tracker just Thatcham cat1.

Adrian Flux were crap, they wanted £1800+

Adrian Flux Quoted me 3500  .  The net link for them is :

http://www.houghtoninsurance.co.uk/page1.htm

Hopefully they can help, but it may only a quote as a second car. Which will be a god send having a slow car for winter (plus it won\'t drink petrol like the rx7 !)

Cheers Shaun:)

I won\'t be classing it as a second car as I\'ll need all my NCB, and I\'m sure I won\'t be able to insure my 200sx as well as the rex, so the hundy will have to say goodbye:(

Unless theres any advice on what I need to ask the insurer - I always thought that you can only apply NCB to one car at a time?

Oh, is this classic insurance and limited mileage btw?

that\'s another advantage of clasic car insurance it doesn\'t use the NCB so i\'m using mine on the mondeo & yes it\'s limited milage

They don\'t use your NCB at all :D  . They look at your experience, age, length of license, accidents and age then give you a quote. Soemtime NCB is a farce anyway !

If it costs you 2000k with full use or 500 quid as a second car, buy the another car, it only needs to be a cheap deisel because once you have the rx7 and the weather turns crap ( which the british weather does ) then you will be glad, plus petrol and the rx7 do mix quite well. I\'ve put 70 quid worth of diesel in my 106 and 250 quid worth of petrol in my rx7  since i bought the two, and the rx7 has only done a few more miles than the 106 !

Just tried Haughton and they can\'t even offer me a quote:reallymad :reallymad

Said I am too young (25) and the car has too many mods (certainly not in the realms of big singles)

Oh, well £1265 is the best so far.  TESCO here I come.:(

Do they know its an import?
Does the car have any mods that they know of?

I must admit I thought Tesco would be dearer, but it seems no-one else can come close for me atm.

Just make sure you don\'t modify the rx7 with tesco, they hit you really hard.

As for houghton, how old is the rx7, is it under 10 years old ? I think they only insure them over 10 years, maybe the car is too young !

Some mods can make it very difficult for them to give you a quote, a roll cage can destroy a quote.

Sorry to hear your having no luck, hope it changes soon !

they know its an import and that its standard. i got a quote with a body kit exhaust induction dials and wheels, all that lot bumped it up by 400 which i though was very good considering how much it would cost to replace.

I don\'t know how to post a link to it but here\'s the general idea of whats done to it: -

"Car has mines ecu & intercooler, feed downpipe & midpipe, veilside back box, fuel pump, new version hks induction, blow off valve, mines front strut brace, hks evc boost controller, ngk racing spark plugs 10 heat range, greddy water and exhaust electronic temp gauge, greddy boost gauge, aftermarket strengthenend power plant frame either re-amemiya or mazdaspeed, stainless steel brake lines, twin plate clutch, new bigger twin turbos, ohlins fully adjustable suspension. Car handles fantastic and is very fast. Minor work will be completed on the nearside front & offside front wheel arch where the car was previously lowered to much and rubbed against tyres. Car has since been set to an acceptable height. minor scratches on front bumper which will also be rectified. Full knightsports bodykit and mazdaspeed ms02 rims not scrapped or curbed."

All of this has been declared so I guess Tesco aren\'t that bad:)

I\'m glad you liked the look of the car, I haven\'t seen it in the flesh myself yet but I\'ve heard/read good things about it.:)

It\'s having the stone chips and such sorted this week IFAIK so I\'ll be getting it if all is o.k. at the end of the month/start of sept.

Can\'t wait!!!

Sone high and some good quotes there. I was unfortunate enough to lose all my no-claims by being on my ex-wifes policy for too long (so she could build some bonus).
I went with Admiral in the end with a quote for £1030. I\'m 25, no no-claims and do have access to 2 other vehicles. If you really want to get your quote down, put your father or mother on as a named driver. It got my quote down by another £300!!! :)

just as a point of note, don\'t bother telling them 4000 miles, a limited mileage policy only has a difference of around 100 quid. May as well tell them 20,000 :)
