Ok, stupid question time....!
I have an 1988 S4 Turbo with a N340 (Japan spec) ECU. Now ive been looking around for a while for 'mild/stage 1' type ecu's, and ive seen quite a few 'Re-amemiya/knights sports' etc on ebay and other places. BUT, almost 99% of them say they are for the S5 89-91 and not my 86-88 S4 car.
Now i dont want to get a cheap ecu, with a resistor soldered in, but i dont know which of these brands are any good? I have a friend with an S5 and a Re-Amemiya 'stage 1' type ecu, which i believe it mapped for the usual air filter/cat back exhaust and mild boost upgrade, and it runs great.
Now for the silly questions -
Do i HAVE to get an S4 compatable ECU, or will an S5 ECU work seeing as it should have its own map etc installed, or are there any other problems like pin orientation/plug shapes etc that i should be aware of?
Does anyone know where i could find a suitable ecu for my S4?
I didnt want to go down the apex-i route etc, as i only want a relatively mild upgrade, and the engine is reasonably standard apart from an air filter/exhaust and a hardwired 255lph fuel pump.
Any help would be appreciated,

As far as I know the Series 4 turbo is a real rare animal.
I bought one as a project car 10 or so years ago and actually sold it on to a guy who wanted to tripple rotor it.
As soon as I got it I found that the whole wiring loom is different, the basic engine was the same but just about every ancillary bolted to it was different and the only way forward was going to be a Series 5 Turbo II as a donor.
Real sorry to sound negative but this may be your only way forward to tune it, may be just maybe the RX7 Club in America can help but I'm not sure they even got this car as American cars seem to be very different.
For instance, they never got a Turbo II cabriolet like us, all there's were EGI's

Yeah, tell me about it! I didnt realise how different they were, ha ha. Im not too fussed about changing the ecu, i just wanted to increase the power a bit without going too mad and/or going too 'dangerous' etc....
Yeah, theres been a few bits of info on the usa sites, but its all a bit vague, because there are us spec ecu's, jap spec, and then uk/europe spec i believe... Talk about minefield!!
Id have thought that there must be some aftermarket Japan ecu's about, seeing as mine is a jap import car, but alot of the jap aftermarket ecu's arent listed as S4 or S5 - it just says something like 'FC3S Turbo manual ECU'....

Well Carl is currently modding my car to suit an FD3s Apexi ecu by wiring in a FD3s engine loom.
Could this not be a possible route?
Edit: Obviously a few sensors and stuff will need changing
Yeah, it is a possibility but a bit drastic as my car runs fine (touchwood!) and i didnt want to mess about with it too much, and a mildy uprated ecu would be just fine. I have a 'stage 1' N374 ecu on the way, which aparently came out of an S4 Turbo, but we will see as i cant remember all the ecu codes right now. lol

Just an update on this from the rx7.com forum. Aparently the N332 and N333 code ecu's are compatable/interchangeable with the N340 (Jap Spec) ecu, so if anyone has a upgraded N332 or N333 then please give me a shout. The N374 ecu is for the S5 FC and will not work due to the electric omp system. (This is a pain as i have a proper perfect 'stage 1' N374 ecu sat here that i cant use!)
So if anyone on here that has an import S4 then the 3 ecu codes that are useable are N332, N333 and N340.
Now i have to go and find an upgraded 1 of these...!

Have you looked into rtek chips and daughterboards from the USA it's what iv been tempted with in the same boat as you don't particularly want to go power fc ect
To be honest, ive not looked at them, but i know alot of the usa guys rate them quite highly. ill have a search for them and see what they do.
