Right so iv been thinking if an mx5 2006 ish model and then eventually putting my engine it.... However pointless if it's easier to already start with a rotor powered motor ;D ::)
So what should I be looking for? I don't want a low comp one as I want to drive it hassle free, apart from maintenance.
Obviously a 231 model but what? An R3? Can I stretch too that cost. Probably looking at no more than 3500 to spend.
What's the first thing apart from coils that should be done? ARBs? Lowered springs?
Stay with a series one Rx8 check it starts hot and has had coils in its life and you should be ok
Don't be put off by a bargain 192 as they go up the road and round the track just as fast as a 231 model
Arb's and springs are a good place to start to get it handling better
Don't forget you should be able to drop the subframe with the engine and gear box in place and drop and bolt the Mk3 body straight on as they share the same floor pan.
Have a chat with Carl Grant...im sure he'll have a 8 to scratch the itch or be able to source you 1. Last time i was over there Brad 1 of the mechanics was thinking about selling his 192.
Thing is with an 8 you get 4 seats so with the new addition to the family theres room for everybody!
3500 should be able get you a nice lovely spec;d PZ
However cars with rebuilds are not fetching the money so this is an option older car with fresh or recent rebuild.
56 plate onward.....big tax bill!
What's the difference between a 192 and a 231? Is one a 4 port and the other a 6 or something?
The 8 is more practical with having my son now tbh, I was being a little selfish thinking of an mx5 as some one would have to get left at home...(the gf)
What rpms do the different models rev too? Clive's rev to 9750 around corners... Remember that very well

yep.
6 port 231 6 speed
4 port 190 5 speed
My s type revs to 12 k and thats why its 250bhp.....lol
S type??
Mines a jap import....S type....for special!
no seriously its a JDM but basically a 231. subtle differences but basically the same.
stated as having 250 bhp but prob down to the higher octane fuel....it dont feel like 250 more like 200...my old 200sx had 250 for a bit and not as potent as that.
ive never driven a 190 so cant comment on that.
I change at 9250 rpm when having a play.
most 231 come with leather my old 1 did and tbh i didnt like it...slippy slide in seat and cold in winter and hot n sticky in summer. ive got the velour interior in this 1 and allthough not as showy i much prefer it....however the recaros in the wifes R3 are stunning...you get in them not on them!
If your in Wiltshire area more than happy for you to have a rag of mine....its running new MRP coils leads and plugs and 6k old engine and i believe to be running best it can for a standard car...would be a good benchmark when looking at others.
Wiltshire? Anywhere near huddersfiled or leicester? Lol.
How much was the r3? Tax in them is 409 a year isn't it?
Grant, I talked to Jon and Steve G at RS11, and they really convinced me that RX-8 has really big potential.
And if you look what Carl and Clives says about them, I really think that you should go and test some ;)
Carl:
"Seriously best handling car I have ever driven is the rx8. With a few minor mods they can out handle most cars on track. Best combo I found was eibach lowering springs and racing beat antiroll bars. Stock discs and uprated pads."
Clive:
"Yes the RX-8 will out handle other RX\'s in stock trim, but then to be fair it should is an evolution of previous RX models, plus it has electronics to assist it and any one who has seriously driven an RX-8 on track will know these cars can carry tremendous corner speed.
Going in the reverse, having driven all the RX-7 / 8 models, drive an RX-8 and you can feel the FD in it , then drive a Gen 2 and you can still feel the Gen 1 in it, all these cars have very good handling but as I say you can feel the evolution through the RX range, but then that\'s how it should be surely, i.e. Mazda getting better and better over the years at something they are very good at / making cars go around corners"
Also, funny thing happened few days ago. Local pro drifter here got 8 and he loved it. He said that he didnt realize how good car 8 really.(allthough needs more power ;)
I think I will most likely buy one, although my passion is with drag racing I would much prefer a street car as it's more practical for my life right now.
But what do I get?
An R3 seems best but dunno about price?
We paid a fantastic 7600 for the wifes 2010 with 30k and bhr coils/ mazda speed lowering springs....was cheaper as private sale and we went to up North toget it.....however all the probs on s1 may not be solved on r3s....jury still out me thinks.
Out if my range. Gonna have a look on autotrader, see what's cracking. There's a fair few to go through though
Again, just wondering:
-Are bearings, rotors, e-shaft (well, all internal parts) the same in both engine models?
-High power engines has bigger compression, right...?
-So are those rotors completely different or just shape of those pools is different?
-Rotor housings and sides are completely different?
-Different flywheels and counter balanses?
Sorry again my curiosity but Renesis has been on my mind like daily basis ;)
I really really really really need to get one of those and take it apart and study it! ;D
One thing I do know about the renesis is that the rotor have small scallops in them to increase inlet duration

Kuro is limited edition 231..nice low mileage....1st one mileage too high for money.
No mention of coils in either so budget them in.
That kumo is a cat D too. Any car in autotrader Is getting 1000 knocked off minimum, would need to get a compression check too.
Id look for an private sale Grant dealers warrantys are not worth the paper there written on and cost of hpi check so cheap hpi a private 1 yourself easy by text.
Bound to be an enthusiast out there looking to sell..

I got one of the last R3s for just under £20k - but there are some real bargains now and even mine in excellent condition with low mileage is probably only worth about £8k at best.
But all RX-8 registered 2006 and later are £500 tax.
silver 25k 1 has Hankook V12 tyres all round.....imo tyres fitted show how the rest of the car has been treated.....tried and tested formula. :P...accelera tyres...cheap skate poor maintenance ....premium branded matched tyres.....well looked after and serviced !
Right so I'm prety much going to be buying one when the rx4 cash arrives in my bank, the gf has said an rx8 is her fave car.
That silver one is a great bargain BUT it's silver

:( no matter how much you clean them or polish them they just don't pop.
Rx8 stormy blue would be the best colour but I can't be too picky.
Do people break R3s? So I could get a set of those seats and they should bolt straight in right??
Been looking at racing beats suspension package :)
ARBs, and some 0.5" lowering springs that are slightly stiffer. Recommended for street or auric rods use.

This looks good, 06 Copper Red Evolve- 26,000 miles with good compression at £3600
Ooh I really like that colour:-)
Not on rx8oc though:(
That ex8 is 217 miles away! Bit too far me thinks
The strato blue one is very nice but that's 220 mild away. Why can't it be 20 mikes away?!!!
You gotta travel for the right car mate. Mind you 220 miles is tankful in an 8 lol! Lucky fuel prices are dropping . Get your share of fuel before its gone is what i say!
220 out of a tank!! Finding the time to go that far for a car is what dissuades me. And if I get there and it's not for me:(
I'm giddy to get out
In one now, all three of us blasting along at 9,000 rom
220 miles on a tank with the mrs driving :P
Ha yeh. I am a bit shocked that they only get 220. But I suppose they don't get the cruising in vaccum a turbo motor gets.
Petrol shortly to be below a £1 a litre so should ease abit...
dont know what other are getting but thats based on my type s and r3.
How many litres in a full tank? 60??
dunno got be slightly bigger than 60 litres....misses reckon 200 to 250 miles on a £60.00 fill up. Its bad even my evo 8 got better mpg :))
Series 1 RX8s have a 60 litre tank, Series 2 RX8s (R3s are the only series 2 the UK got there are only about 730 in the UK and whilst they're nice they're more awkward to work on and have unique parts that are harder to come by) have 64 litre tanks. The holy grail on the RX8OC amongst the eco-minded is 300 miles to the tank on a Series 1 and 324 miles on a Series 2. I've got 320 from my series 1, but I've also drained a tank in 78 miles!
Given where you are I reckon it would be good to have a chat with Rotary Revs (http://www.rotaryrevs.com/). It's in Leeds and is run by the chairman of the RX8OC and specialises in RX8s. Ben can generally find some good stuff in terms of a bargain.
This is the RX8OC buying guide which you should be able to view without signing up to the forum. (http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=24047) (If you can't then PM me!)
Thanks will, I shall have a read through it. Also give them a ring, didn't realise they were up north away from civilisation of the south
Right iv been busy working and being a dad. Got money burning a hole in my ass so need an rx8, well infact I'm thinking of getting 2. A dirt cheap one that's low on compression to strip out and out my turbo engine in, and one decent to have for weekends instead of driving my work car
I got 2 now! Bought my red 1 on a whim bid mot next week. Earmarked for a mate of mine though once i know its ok.
Good 1s are about but i think youll have to be prepared to travel. With your budget gonna get whole lotta car for little money. Prices seem rock bottom atmo.
Yeh I had a look on rx8oc ther other day to see if those 2 I looked at before were still for sale but I couldn't see them. Was wondering if there is one a fair distance away if someone near by would view it for me, so I don't waste a trip and it's not a good one. As I will most likely have to get the train down and drive back with it.
There's one on eBay now for cheap or close offers that I may buy if he prepared to give it up for next to nowt
See anything southwest you like ill happily check it out for you.
Thanks. Just having a look at some on rx8oc now. There's one with a rebuild from rotary revs for 3250 but I don't want to pay more than 2500. My rule for buying/selling cars is that the asking price is always 1000 higher than you want to sell it for so the buyer feels they are getting a deal so 2500 is a good price to me

Looks immaculate thats a 192 you after either powered 1s? 06 onwards that tax is real hard to swallow....wifes pays it on the r3 i said i never would but when its mine i will!
No want a 231 for the road. Tax is a joke on 06s. But if I have to then I have to.
The blue ones a 192? A never mind
Yep nemisis is 192. 5 speed box on 192s and 6 speed on 231. Dont think alot of diff tbh only driven 1 192 but a good few years back now when i had my first 231. Ill have a look about locally...only prob i see sourcing from rx8oc is over inflated prices but flip side sorted well looked after cars.
Yeh they're over inflated but if they want to sell they're cars then they have too let them go, however there's always someone willing to pay the asking price

^^ Yep, that's "Japimport" (Derry's) car from the RX-8 OC. He took it to Cadwell last year and I met him there - very nice guy. I think it's a very good price for the car, with all the mods and fresh engine. Genuine reason for sale too, as he's starting a business and will be travelling a lot to clients. Not the right car for economy and not quite the right impression for an accountant to roll up at a client in this car :)
Hope it goes to someone who will look after it and enjoy it :)
Well gents, I have been studying, thinking, and looking at my low power engine. And talking to few engine builders, including Aston.
I really think that low power engine is under rated and taunted for no good reason. I see lots of potential and room for improvement in that engine.
At this point Im not really sure if Im going to semi pp my engine, because I believe that with porting that engine can do 230-240BHP, and quite easy I believe. Ofcourse Im not sure about that but it would be awesome project to test.
Seems like no one likes to tune and port those engines. Well, for buyer its a good thing, they can be bought quite cheap. (I think)
This was a bit of topic but I hope this helps a little. :)
I have messaged him on eBay. Hopefully he will be willing to knock a bit off the value of the car.

The porting is one thing that people haven't really bothered with as the ports are quite big, especially the inlet ports, I thought many moons ago why someone hasn't opened the exhaust port and out a semi pp inlet in there too, it would have a huge amount of inlet air and huge amount of exhaust too.
Carl did a full pp renesis motor but kept the side exhaust ports. He said it would be near 300 HP and the side exhaust keeps the noise down as over lap is prety much non existent compared to peripheral exhaust as that is where you get such loud noises from. The overlap and apex seal opening and closing on the port creates a loud "crack" so to speak but the side exhaust port doesn't
gonna get me bridgeported engine dyno'd this year...back to back with my fresh 231 engine same dyno same dyno settings.
I will be Intersting to see. I don't believe they're 231 HP. I would be very surprised if they were
yes well documented 231 a bit of an exaggeration! would be nice to see the difference in my road car to race car....although the race has no cat open exhaust etc. Wait n see time.
I have been talking with few US, Aussie and Kiwi dudes about those pp exhaust on renesis engine. They said that exhaust pp basically is impossible to do. And its much easier simply to swap FD housing on it. And I understand that...
But I want to see how far I (or people) can go with stock renesis parts. :97:
I think that intake ports can support huge amount stuff to housings, especially on high power version. But because of shape and desing of exhaust, it cant get out. So if more stuff is provided to housings with semi pp or full pp, problem in exhaust is multiplied. And rotary, like 2 stroke engine, is very picky about exhaust. If it doesent flow, engine will not make power. Only thing I can do at this point is open up exhaust so far that it will brake ;)
My first plan with my project engine was to semi pp it, intake and exhaust. But seems like I have to go back to drawing boards and think my prioritys. One engine, 3 plans... ;)
Stick the light engine in a light car ....bhp per tonne wins.
Stuck boost in the light engine in any car and it will win:)
Been on the look out for a r3 diff for my s1 as well...( no luck yet)who needs 140 plus top end on a road car.
What's the diff ratio? 4.4-1? Look on racing beat website they have loads of option for crown wheel and pinions
Sweet off there now. S1 4.4 and s2 4.78 .....that mx5 i worked on had a 4.7 in it could tell the difference. Did comtemplate 17" wheels.....
Meh bit expensive actually
http://www.racingbeat.com/RX8/Ring-Pinion-Differential.html
However the dollar/£ rate is always good. Clive distributes racing beat stuff too;)
yep but cool available! ! ill nick the wifes! guy was breaking 1 on ebay..first thing he sold off the car!

Is the stud pattern the same on renesis engines and FD engines? Also ain't the water seals on a renesis on the housings instead of the plates? So you would have water seal issues?
Yes, in renesis water seals are in housings. I´m not sure about stud pattern but I believe its different.
Actually, those things confused me too. Water seal thing can be customized but I dont see way to modify stud pattern.
Bridge?
Did you talked with him about his renesis pp experiences?
Yes bridge. Will ask more when he gets back to me in the week. Hopefully it will brap a little.
What do you want me to ask him about the pp?
No brappage on mine unfortunately. ...bridge is on the tertiary port thats closed on idle. Need to read up on the s dais air system fitted to the 8. 3 ports on each housing depending on revs dictates which ports are switched in and flow air....fairly complicated. Closest comparison would be like coming on vtec in an integra i used to have. With tertiary bridge should flow more air for mid and high rpm gains.
Oh I forgot they had that silly valve thing. I suppose you could do sole wiring so that it is always open?
Yes, high powers intake is really weird. Those valves opens in 5 different ways. That way air flow is best for each rpm. I think if you try to wire that thing open, it messes flow completely...
Any tips and help from Carl would be good. I have few "proplems" but I dont know how to ask them in english :D

Any excuse to post up a track video Grant - this from last Friday at Snetterton....
Opt for 1080p on the "gearwheel" for best quality once running.

You'll be disappointed if you dyno. Most 231's don't make that power and there is a lot of controversy over the settings used on the various dynos when measuring. I'm no expert on dynos and I've never had mine done.
In summary, most 231's seem to measure about 190-200, but the RX-8 is much more about the handling and carrying speed through corners. Once you get one on the B roads or, even better, on track, you'll see that power isn't everything with these cars :)
Yeh iv been int phone with Clive for about thirty mins talking about them. Corner speed and braking are waaay better than an FD and will outperform a turbo FD on track easily.
I'm curious as to what power mine will have is all, as if I change the exhaust I want to see if the expense will warranted etc.
200 HP is still very good, considering that the FD with turbos was only 250fwhp then mazda have done something right.
I will be going to AETs hub dyno. All dynos are different but if using the same dyno for the same car then they are going to be fine. It's mainly a tuning tool firstly and a HP/torque bragging tool secondly. I expect to see a nice flat torque curve, a bit like a v8 but no where near as much lb/ft
Mine going to be bridge ported too

Quote from: Grant Monkhouse on February 23, 2015, 10:31:36 AM

As in my sig, my car is running on Tein Monoflex Coilovers (about 20mm drop), tein front strut brace, Racing Beat F/R ARB's. Other mods include short-shifter and Racing Beat RAM air duct and Racing Brake front calipers + Racing Brake disks all round.
When I started to take the car on track, 7 years ago, it was stock and my first outing was to Brands Hatch (Indy Circuit) where I managed to get round in 66s on a June evening with a warm track. Now, with 43 trackdays and the mods, I can lap Brands in 60.4 seconds on a cold, slightly damp December day. So I think the mods have been worth it :)
Ah can't see sig on tappatalk?
6 second is a lot to shave off, especially when damp.
Stick engine?

If/when my 70k stock engine needs a rebuild I'll be going street/bridge. I'll be interested in those who have gone the Bridge route; Street is a no-brainer, but I'm interested to see how much better (and reliable) the Bridge option turns out. There is no doubt on track I can tell if I'm behind a ported RX-8 as they certainly have the edge on the straights.
Reliability won't be an issue on a bridge port.
Carl's warrenty proves that.
One thing that makes me smile about getting my rx8 is that it can rev to 9500

.
From what Clive said about Carl's bridge is that the power doesn't drop off, at 6500 rpm it sort of has a turbo like kick and you have that bit more power, I will share my experience when iv got the car and it's run in.
The dyno print out will show all these things too:)

That's good to know.
The 9,500 rev limit is awesome and addictive. You may notice on the video up above there is one very long, sweeping corner (Coram) where I'm holding the car on the beep, just below the "soft cut" rev limit for what seems like ages. I do the same thing approaching "Montreal", the 2nd gear hairpin. The beep is VERY useful when on track as an indicator of engine revs!
On Friday I used a litre of oil in ~120 track miles (additionally I premix ~1:200 Castrol Power Racing 2T), which shows the OMP is working hard with all the constant high revving :)
Ref the 9,500rpm rev limit, I know several of the RX-8 guys are experimenting with "MazdaEdit" software and are "upping" the redline :) At Snetterton on Friday I know Aston's "Superlight" Essex Rotary car had been remapped with a 10,000 rev limit....

Yeh I'm hoping to do a track day or too, hence the reason for me already inquiring to Clive what he recommends with regards to ARBs and lowering springs.
10,000 rpm sounds great so long as it's only for brief periods, for say stopping you having to change up a gear between shirt corners.
Increasing rpms puts greater strain on bearings and stuff, even more greatly than shoving boost in the engine belive it or not
a dyno shoot out day would be great same mode on the dyno so no BS. id be up for it as plan to do my bridge versus standard later on in the year.
Yes, power is not everything in track. ;) If you have no traction, you cant use it. If your chassis is useless, you cant turn. If your brakes are bad, you cant dive into corner :)
I have heard about those rx-8 dyno figures too. Offcourse it depends on dyno and dyno user. But in Renesis case, I believe that they simply didnt have time and resources to tune every car to optimum. And as you know, that ecu is really smart. So even if basic engine is the same, they put out different dyno figures as stock. But I have heard that just tuning with that MazdaEdit program, you can get big differenses in stock engine.
For my project engine, I dont want max peak power. I want good power and torque at 5000-8000rpm. Just because usually that is the rev range that is used in tracks(I suppose)... and if you bang that rev limiter all the time, engine wont like it ;)
Beep beep beep! Its the only way lol.

Absolutely, a very addictive sound on track ;D
Strange but my s type has not got a beeper...very disapointed about that....wifes has though beep beep beep beep. Got flashy lights on the westy f1 style cool. Doubt id hear the beep init.
My mates uk car dont beep either...but the nieghbour does...hed never heard it in 3 yrs! I tooked it out beeeep beeep beeeep... love it! Dont like my alarm clock beep though!
In a rotary the rev limit beep means change gear, in a piston engine it means ££££££££
I heard my FD beep at 8,000 rpm in 4th gear;);););) work out the speed:)
Save you some time.... I was doing 140mph

Changed into fifth and then cruised back down to 80mph
I blew mine up in 5th at 6500...lol
Just been out to mine and lights on key out no beep....we will have repair that! ☺

Back in good old days, Bro´s FB went beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep cause he revved it something like 9500rpm and in FB beeper shouts at 6000rpm (or 6500, dont remember)
I hated that beeper. But loved that +9000 sound ;)
Carl says 2-3 weeks. Engine coming out ready for rebuild.
Gota wait for private reg to be swapped for normal reg.
Wonder if there's anyone up near me with a standard car that wants to get theirs dynod at the same time as I get mine done?
Defo budget for some brand new coils to go with the fresh engine.
Yes I have been thinking of those. I have some AEM coils... I wonder if someone does a harness for them?
Oh yes they do!!!!!

Just emailed a guy I talked too a while back about the coils I have, hopefully he will tell me if they good.
I can't see why not though as they are good for boosted rotaries so NA shouldn't be a problem
