Title: So who runs their 3rd gen RX7 everyday? (or any other rotary engined car)
Post by: HoddyRS on December 09, 2014, 11:38:40 AM
Would be nice to hear from people who run them everyday or (like me) whenever they're home from work :) I'm hankering after a 3rd gen as a xmas present to myself ;-) ::)

What a strange reply! I'm trying to get comments off people who run them as a daily and if they would say it's a feasable thing to do and not too much hassle, as that is what I'm after doing myself.

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick mate.

I have had to in the past and imo it wasn't the best. My car was too loud and little nips to the shops were a bit of arse.
Plus driving it in pissing rain or sleet and snow wasn't my cup o tea.

I just feel it's more suited to a second car but for the people that do it's perfectly doable as long as you keep the exhaust and suspension sensible.

As neil says it really depends on the tune of the car i ran my relatively stock Fd for about a year as a daily driver...loved it to be fair as going to work was "an occasion" and always motivation to get out of bed!
However some of the older cars now are nearing classic car status and appropraite care needs to taken...and some of the big power singles with ther triple plate clutches must be a chore try to piddle along behind a Honda jazz in town traffic.

biggest issue i found in summer was due to me junking aircon it can get pretty hot inside as even with the windows open!. and i mean hot n sweaty!

My neighbours werent to impressed when i used to come home from nights shift though lol!  :P

Little off topic but:

Long time ago, my brother used his FB as daily driver, more than a year I think. FB is good car in winter, great handling, warms quite fast...

But problem was, fresly builded street port engine, 2 inch straight exchaust with two little mufflers. You can imagine, my bro start his car 4am.

brap brap brap and all neighbor hood is awake ;)

I ran an FB as a daily for about 5yrs with a FC NA 13b and LPG. Was quite a good commuter to be honest. As long as you keep on top of maintanance then I can't see any issues. Engine blew up on the motorway and I had to go on to something more boring ! I did almost 10k miles a year in it too with a 100mile range per fill ups !

I'd have an FD as a commuter, but the fuel would be the killer, LPG and NA would be the only answer, maybe even with an rx8 engine.

Thanks for the great reply's everyone! :)

I guess it will all boil down to the test drive on Sunday (praying for the weather!) I'm should be visiting 'CharlieP' as he has a white FD and possibly a black single turbo'd FD for sale. I'm not that bothered about waking the neighbours as it won't be used to commuting and as it is the 5 cars in the household, 3 are decatted anyway :D It's mainly going to be used on the weekends so I can live with the fuel bill :)

In regards to FD's, does anyone know what the  standard clutch can take? Someone mentioned having a triple plate clutch for a single turbo one.

Thanks again :D

I only have one car, and it's an FD.

It's actually fine for shopping mostly, it's small so not hard to park, only problem is that the doors need a lot of space to open.  I find it pretty comfortable on longer drives too, and 25mpg isn't too bad.

However to be fair, I don't use it during the week as I take the train to work, so I only need a car at weekends.

The only real problem is that it keeps needing expensive maintenance, apart from that it's fine as an only car :D

I ran one of my FD's for seven years using it as a normal car and out of all the cars I have owned it's by far the most comfortable car on long journeys I have ever know, as you say mpg was ok even with a GT35 turbo strapped on.

Still remember the supermarket thing though where you come back and can't get those long doors to open after cars had parked up each side, many times I squeezed in dropped the hand brake off and rolled the car out to get in !
