Title: This flooding issue...
Post by: HoddyRS on November 22, 2014, 06:16:37 PM
Right. So I\'m on the hunt for an RX7 and want to make sure it would be a viable option as it will be used as my only mode of transport when I\'m back from work (only on the weekends mind)
Because of the way our driveway is sometimes the car may need moving around so starting the car and turning it off again over a brief period of time may be needed. I found the following link which explains what may cause the issue (a bug found in the EFI system?) and it makes out that this issue cannot be rectified :|
Can some knowledgable person cast their beady eye over this and tell me how true this is and in fact if there is a way of it not happening all the time?

Thanks everone :)

Some truth in there mate but some scare mongering.

Simply metals expand at different rates and a cold engine switched off looses compression as the metals have expanded at different rates.
Flooding is more prominent in higher mileage engines with worn apex seals and poorly maintained cars i.e weak ignition or tired slow spinning starter....yes its an issue but in my experience its over exaggerated. Simply blipping throttle to 4k and switching off is good practice.
Proper deflood is to remove sparks. Remove fuel pump relay or fuse and crank.

By holding throttle at 4000 rpm and switching off fuel is cut but the engine rotors are spinning from 4k down to 0 and this clears the housing of excess fuel ready for the next start. I do it every time i switch off as i know if i dont habit form the time i do switch off cold it wont start....
Flooded my fd once started up after fitting rad and had coolant leak shut down without 4k shutdown and flooded.
1 fd and 3 rx8\'s aint happened again.

Cheers for your reply mate :) It does help clear things up and and makes me feel a bit better about the issue.

I guess my main problem now is when I get one is explaining this to my dad if he decides to move the car so he can get his cobra kit car out of the garage...I may have to put a reminder post-it note on the steering wheel for him ;-) (having said that he does like driving my cars so he will probably take it for a cheeky spin every now and again when I\'m away to erm de-coke the engine :P)

No worries bud yes just explain 4k shutdown to him and should not have an issue.

if you have a healthy engine then providing it see\'s some sort of heat, even if its only for a few minutes just to get it off of its cold start sequence then restarting should not be a problem.

Personally I have owned many Rotary\'s of different types and never even revved before closing down.

Hope this helps

Preventing cold start flooding is the only thing that requires holding the revs at 4000 rpm, anything else is just wasting fuel.

It\'s as simple as good (not too old) plugs and good battery
That\'s the only time I\'ve had flooding

Revving it to 4k and turning the ignition off...got it!

We got there in the end :D

Out of interest mate what kind of spec does the engine in your kit car have? I bet it flys!

get it properly mapped, after my engine needed rebuilding after flooding due to over fueling from the hayward map i had it rebuilt and properly mapped to reduce the amount of fuel at cold start - i no longer do the 4k shut off and can move it out my garage and switch off with no issues, the mapper was Marco (Blitz boy mapping)

That\'s interesting robo pal. You say \'properly mapped\' do you mean by a different tuner other than Hayward or live mapping?

Still got that one for sale yes.
I meant about the flooding don\'t believe everything you read on the net, these cars were driven by ordinary people in the first place so as long as its a good condition and very well maintained RX7 you shouldn\'t have any probs.
Maintenance is king with rotaries, it prevents so many issues:wiggle

When I got my FD I was concerned about turning it off cold, after all I\'d read.  Then one time I started it up from cold, and after ten seconds the low coolant buzzer went off, so I instinctively shut it off straight away.  It re-started without any trouble, so my worrying hadn\'t been necessary.  (Obviously I topped up the coolant first).

So at least on my FD, it isn\'t a problem.

Thanks for the replies I think it\'s looking good for me to take the plunge! Just have to get home now and find a friendly insurer ;-)

A random question here but why don\'t you lot front a team to enter totb every year? I\'ve been every year (except this one) since 2003 and it\'s always been a good gathering. Better now that Redline don\'t hold the reigns. I do remember a small number of FD\'s competing in the early days and the last one to have a go was Dragon Performance\'s drag RX7. That was certainly a crowd favourite :)
