Title: Newbie, found my perfect RX7?
Post by: Rich. on November 20, 2014, 07:41:02 PM
Hi all,

My name is Richard and I\'m based near Cannock, Staffordshire. Decided it was time to join up and introduce myself.

Previous car history includes a few mkiv Supras and an Evo IX. The Supras were all great cars and got used daily, the Evo IX was technically very good but really lacked from a drivers point of view and I struggled to get any enthusiasm for it.

I\'ve got a daily driver now and I\'m back in the market for something to swallow my spare time tinkering, put a grin on my face on a Sunday morning blast and that gives me a tingle in the nether regions whenever I look at it!

The RX7 has always had massive appeal to me but like many, I had been put off by the horror stories from people who haven\'t owned one. Though, since I\'ve now got a daily and a garage it is now a more realistic proposition and it\'s as good a time as any for me to bite the bullet. If it goes bang, then it can stay in the garage until it\'s repaired or I learn how to rebuild it myself.

Anyway, I\'m off to try and seal the deal with this at the weekend and all being well I\'ll be taking the plunge into ownership...

To me, she\'s perfect and I\'m in love :D

I\'ve done some reading and there\'s still lots more reading to do but so far compression test results have come back very good indicating a recent rebuild  and it\'s just awaiting the completion of the registration process. If all checks out this weekend when I view.. it will be mine!

Hi Rich and welcome to MRC

That\'s an awful lot of car that I\'m sure as a late model FD will only appreciate in value over time if left somewhere like the standard car it is ATM

Had a read and all seems OK but one thing I will say is get a set of trade plates put on it and get it driven.

Once driven for a few miles, turn it off a listen for any gurgally sounds,

If you hear any water system noises it may indicate water seal failure

If all is OK then look over it like any other car :Thumbsup!

Good luck out there and hope this car is all it says, if so you will never wish for another car :3gears-rh

Thank you both for the welcomes :)

The results are rear rotor: 7.6, 7.6, 7.7 front rotor: 7.9, 8.0, 8.2 which from what I gather is spot on. Figures taken with a hot engine at 250RPM. They must be confident as they\'re willing to include a 6 month no quibble warranty on the car including the engine.

I will be welcome to take it for a test drive apparently which is what I intend to do. They\'ve also said they\'re happy for me to get it up in the air and check out the underside which is a positive sign. Couple of jobs that are tbc before she leaves are some bushes on the rear (unsure which), a new hose in the engine bay (again unsure which) and a very minor front bumper scatch/scuff which is hardly detectable in the pictures is going to be repaired as they felt the car was in such good condition it would sacriligous not too.

Let\'s hope all checks out on the weekend. I\'m actually going up on my Birthday and considering stopping in a Travel Lodge or similar as it\'s a 4.5 hour drive each way :driving

One additional question... is it recommended that I get the Apexi Power FC fitted and mapped straight away due to running on UK fuel (V-Power)?

No, you don\'t need to fit a Power FC, although do make sure you always use Super Unleaded (97 RON).

There are many import FDs that have been driven for years in the UK on their original factory ECUs.  The FD I have was among them for six years, from 2007 until last year, without problems.  (I\'ve since fitted an Apexi, but that was for trackdays, not because I was worried about the map).

I\'m pretty sure the \'Japanese petrol is higher octane\' is mostly myth, I think their high octane is pretty close to what we have.

Oh yeah, that car looks great - did you pull the trigger on the deal?  Price looks good for the year to me.

The apexi has twice the processing speed of the standard ecu whilst not essential its defo a good idea. It needs to be mapped to your car however so prob buying and mapping gonna cost around £800 . Not essential but a good idea especially if you intend to mod in the future.
