Title: Rotary rookie looking for a 3rd Gen RX7!
Post by: HoddyRS on November 10, 2014, 08:15:11 AM
Hello all :)

Just thought I\'d make my presence known!

In the past 4 and a bit years I\'ve owned 2 powerful FWD hatchbacks (330hp Focus RS mk1 and standard R26 megane) and thought I better pull my thumb out of my ass and get a real mans RWD sports car ;-)

Since the handling and feel of a car are whats mostly important to me (the R26 has no where near the feel you get from the Focus) and reading up on the driving experience of a rex, I decided this would be the car for me :)

So I may be a forthcoming rotary convert and I hope you can help me make the right choice in buying one and *touch wood* it being a reliable countryroad warrior ;-)

Cheers :)

Welcome mate!

Getting rare now and prices are starting to rise. Need to work out what you want and what sort of power. Are you after a daily driver or weekend toy. There lots of faqs to read up on. But get the right 1 and so much fun!

Hi and welcome.
Your not too far from me (Wakefield) and I know there are a couple of guys even closer around Rotherham.

Steve Garbutt at Hayward Rotary North is only at Doncaster if you want to call in, Steve usually has a few FD\'s that he\'s working on.

No questions are daft, so ask away.

Welcome!

Ya, you should think what you want from her. Track or everyday car, modified or not, old or new.
Even though some of these cars here in MRC are really monsters, those dudes use them daily. :D For example in previous message, Chris car is simply stunning(i really really love her) and still she is a monster!

Chris, you should let him ride with you or lend your keys to him ;)

Yes mate I do need to read all the faqs! Initially it seems for me a single turbo would be the way forward (350 400hp on low boost seems sensible ;-)) and a car that\'s set up nicely for handling. I wouldn\'t be using it as a daily as I work away for most of the year but it would still be my only car when I\'m here for the weekend. So you could say I\'m middle of the road on that one! But cooling seems to be important for these engines so the more work that\'s done on that side the better :D Oh and it can\'t look like something out of the Fast&Furious ;-) urrgh!

That\'s good to hear mate :) From previous forums that I\'ve frequented usually the first things said is, "Use the search button, that way you will find the answer that you want" which doesn\'t come across as very welcoming!

Heyup Chris :)

It\'s nice to know there\'s someone close to me willing to offer advice. I never knew there was a Rotary garage so close, even better! The thing is the last time I saw an FD in Rotherham was probably around 11 years ago when I was still taking buses! My GF lives in leeds so I scoot past your way via the M1 quite often (when I\'m home!) so you never know I may come across you at some point :)

Hello pal :)

Everyday car is more like it but I do think trackdays in the future would be a must. Really I just want something that is fast, loud, goes round corners really well and doesn\'t blow up! I\'ll be using it mainly on the weekends as my only car. I\'m not taking it to work because I don\'t fancy putting 500 miles a week on the car!

I know what you\'re saying about people using monster cars as dailys. A friend of mine ( a previously RX7 owner) has a 93\' coupe Honda Civic with 560hp! It\'s has steering wheel, rollcage and bucket seats. That\'s pretty much it and he uses it daily. It sees plenty of trackdays of course (I\'ve no idea how he gets past noise regs he must have a bung or something as it has no silencing!) oh and it weighs 910kg :| It\'s made for a good youtube video ;-)

I\'m only 10 minutes from J40 M1. FD is Sorn for winter, but you can always call in for a chat.

I posted some general FD first-time-buyers\' advice here - http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81893

QuoteReally I just want something that is fast, loud, goes round corners really well and doesn\'t blow up!

well, three out of four is quite good right?  ;-)
Joke, buy a good FD and look after it sensibly, and you have as good chance as with most other 20 year old performance cars.

I would suggest you try and get one with upgraded radiator and intercooler (FMIC or V-mount) already fitted.
If going single turbo for 350-400hp, look for a relatively small turbo so that the boost is evenly spread over the rev range - IMHO, having a big spike of power makes it hard to balance on the throttle and spoils the handling.
Be patient, there are some terrible cars out there as well as some really nice ones.

I really rate the FD\'s handling, it\'s so poised, agile, well-balanced and responsive, you can really push it hard and play with the balance.  As you like turbo cars anyway, and want good handling, I think you\'d really enjoy an FD.

Talking to Carl is a good start

Cheers for the offer Chris. I\'ll see what happens as I\'m not back in the UK until mid December :S Been away since June so I won\'t have driven for over 6 months! :3gears-lh

Sounds brilliant Carl I\'ll definitely have a look although it\'s another month before I\'m back home so it would surprise me if someone hasn\'t snatched it off you by then! What is the chassis milage btw? I\'d imagine the engine is a fresh rebuild?

Hey mate :)

Cheers for the advice. I\'ve already gathered it would be sensible to have mods to help with cooling. I guess I\'m slowly building up a picture of what would suit me on the engine :) Would you consider aftermarket (tein a good choice?) coilovers superior to the standard set up?

I\'m liking it here already :D everyone is dead sound... I\'m sure there is the odd one or two keyboard warriors about ;-) :Hammer
