Title: Tip Seals for Gen 1 12A
Post by: MrSlugg on August 08, 2004, 10:05:07 AM
Hello,

My Gen1 12A needs a rebuild. I may be able to get the local Mazda guys here to do the work reasonably cheaply but I have heard that some tip seals are better than others, i.e. the mazda ones may be a bit crap.

I have heard good things about Hurley tip seals .... anyone using them ? Would you reccomend them ?

Also the tip seals from Hurleys are available in 2mm , 3mm, 3.5mm. What does this size refer to ? And what would I need to get or is it a case of strip the engine and then see what I need ?

Funny, I heard the exact opposit: that Mazda ones are the best.

That was  from Rotechnicks

I guess I\'ve been reading too much propaganda then :)

I know a guy in Australia who races RX-7s and he swears by Hurley Rotary tip seals. Then again, Rotechniks do have a good reputation also.

Anyone else have any experience with non Mazda tip seals ?

The tip size referred to is the width of it.

I\'m not sure I could think of any one who would recommend Hurley any thing over MAzda or otherwise products, I have no personal experience of their products or service however.

The fastest UK Gen 1 is a 12A turbo run by Tim at RX Motors; he only uses the stock mazda seals I believe...

Parts-wise, yes, you take it apart and see whats left to reuse :D

& while it\'s fair to say i\'m not one of Hurleys biggest fans (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/lachen/laughing-smiley-006.gif) but i have heard a few of the experts saying that even their tips aint all that........

Ok, here\'s another question I\'m sure will have many answers.

I\'m not entirely confident in the local mazda dealers ability to rebuild my engine......to be honest rx-7s are like hens teeth here in Ireland and chances are the first rotary engine they have seen was in the RX-8 they got in a couple of months ago.

Anyone think it\'s abit risky lewtting them go at it, or should I be ok?

If not, then who in the UK would you reccomend?

For a 12A turbo - Tim at RX Motors without a doubt. He\'s very well priced and probably built more engines in the UK than any one...

I would agree with Rich on that, Tim is a very good bet, just had my FC rebuilt and ported by Tim - TOP JOB and good price too!

Otherwise, Rotechnics, WGT,Carl Hayward and RE-Works are worth a look. Only apex seal option worth considering are the ianetti (speel check??) ceramic seals, but they are VERY expensive!

Thanks for the advice.

I think ceramic seals would probably be way beyond my budget and probably beyond my needs. I don\'t plan anything too drastic for my Gen 1......maybe a 12a Turbo but that would be about it.
