Title: ***TRACKDAY, Cadwell Park, Friday 17 October***
Post by: Casey on July 28, 2014, 12:26:31 PM
For all you Cadwell Fans, you thought I’d forgotten you  :Nono!; but no, the annual Cadwell trackday is GO!!

Cadwell Park, for anyone new, is a circuit in Lincolnshire, set in beautiful location with lots of green grass and trees surrounding the track.

This event is organised by Mazda on Track, in conjunction with Track Action Online, this is a full Open Pit Lane day for just £120 - that\'s an INCREDIBLY good price for Cadwell :D.  I recommend people book quickly, as these places are likely to sell out well in advance on the link shown below.

To sweeten the deal, a FREE  instruction session is also included in the price (normally £25). MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THIS UNDER “PRODUCT OPTIONS” when booking your place.

If you\'re a newcomer to track days then this is a very well managed and marshalled event. Many people have gained an appreciation of track days here on this circuit in the rolling British countryside - most are now enjoying regular track days and digging deep into their pockets after having being seduced by Cadwell. Don’t say you haven’t been been warned! Newcomers to trackdays are very welcome and, if we have sufficient experienced people along we will be offering our “Buddy” system, whereby you can have 1-to-1 help with all aspects of the day, until you are happy to go solo.

The day consists of a briefing and slow sighting laps behind a lead car to familiarise yourself.

THE CIRCUIT;
Cadwell Park circuit information (http://www.cadwellpark.co.uk/circuit-information.aspx)
Distance 2.173 miles
11 turns

HOTEL BOOKING;
We have stayed at the Beaumont Hotel in Louth for the past “n” years. The hotel is conveniently located, has secure parking and a friendly little bar. Room prices are £44 single, £58 double, with optional brekkie at £7.50 p/p. I\'m booked in for both Thursday and Friday nights. To book a room, IMPORTANT, PLEASE CALL THE HOTEL DIRECTLY on 01507 605005 and MENTION MY NAME (Malcolm Case) when booking, as we have a block of rooms reserved. DO NOT use the website booking as this helps the hotel and they are more flexible on cancellations if booked direct. Plus, Tina and Nick (who own the family run hotel) normally will take payment on departure, rather than up-front.
I have the Hotel (Tina) to reserve 8 further rooms for Thursday and Friday night (in addition to my and Sagar\'s rooms). Please book rooms asap, especially if you want the Friday night, as they are getting bookings that night for a wedding group!

COSTS;
Book a Car & Main Driver on this event £120.00
Additional Driver £35.00
Passenger Pass £10.00
Helmet Hire £10.00

EVENT SCHEDULE (provisional);
7.30 Arrive/sign on
8.30 Briefing (compulsory)
9.00 Sighting laps
9.30 Open pitlane
12.30 Lunch (may vary on the day)
13.30 Afternoon session start
17.00 Finish (subject to light conditions)

Car noise limit: 105dB

Open pitlane means you can come and go as you want on the circuit, as frequently as you want taking into account the number of cars on the circuit. Queuing is rarely more than a few minutes on the day. Especailly so, as this event is limieted to just 60 cars maximum.

BOOKING YOUR PLACE;
SPECIAL “DOUBLE-HEADER” DEAL. You can book just this event OR you can book together with a trackday at Oulton Park on Wednesday 12 November, for a total of £239 saving £20 by booking both together

Ah gutted, I was just looking for an October track day since theres such a long gap before the Time Attack final but this is the one week I can\'t do as I\'m away working and only fly home on the Friday.

Bargain for one of the most fun tracks in the country IMO!

It\'s been going pretty well this year thanks, although not without it\'s issues. Went through three gearboxes in as many rounds which was hard work although still managed to finish all of those rounds by crunching my way through the gears lol. Have had two thirds and two seconds leaving me joint second in the championship with Umar in his FD going into the final at Brands.

I had a new Borg Warner turbo put on and mapped up and Pip got a 15% increase in torque through the mid range with the same power at the top end, which has made the car feel a lot stronger and the spool up is much quicker.

I\'m starting to look at some wheel to wheel stuff now but need to work on heat management before I can do that as it does get pretty hot doing repeated hot laps!

@ Shaun :(  - sorry to hear you\'ve still got issues with the car. I hope you get things sorted soon and can join us back out on track again.

@Neil - just had a read through the Time Attack website reports. Seems that Noble is the one to beat in the RWD class! If possible, I\'ll try and get down to the TA event at BH on 8th Dec. What\'s the setup there, can spectators get access to the pit garages on the day?

Time to sort out food arrangements  :D . Based on those staying at the hotel Thurs and Fri propose;

THURS night; the restaurant at the Beaumont is closed, so I\'ve spoken to Tina and she\'s recommended a family run pub that serves food with local produce where possible and it\'s only a 5 minute walk from the hotel. It\'s the "Woolpack", postcode LN11 0DA. I suggest those who are happy to eat there and arrive at the hotel by 7.15pm, join me in reception for a walk down to the pub. Anyone who wants to join us later in the evening will find us there. I won\'t book a table at the pub, I can\'t think they\'ll be busy on a Thursday night in October!

FRIDAY night; I will book a table for 6 (five on the list below and a "spare") at the "Marrakesh", a Morrocan restaurant about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. It\'s got some great reviews and looks good on their website - LINK HERE (http://www.marrakesh-louth.co.uk/). That link will take you to the menus too. If anyone has a dietary problem with the menu then please PM me.

List as I understand it currently;

I\'m going to Cadwell
[list=1]
I hope everyone is set and raring to go  :lol:

I\'ve booked to go down to see Aston at Essex Rotary tomorrow to get a new Greddy sump fitted. My current one is looking a little rusty! We are going to take a good look inside the old sump pan for any signs of copper, indicating if any bearings may be worn, fingers crossed  :)

Yeah you\'ll be ok to come into the pit garages although need a wrist band for the pit wall but I might be able to sort you one out but I do have a lot of people coming to the final so I\'ll see if I have any left. I\'ve got a decent stock of them from the season but I\'m not just sure how many lol

Neil, no problem, if I can get to the pit garages we can take it from there. It\'s in my diary (and it\'s only just over an hour to drive down), so hope nothing else crops up that day :D

What a superb day :Giggle

Thanks to everyone who came along to support this event and have some track fun. I\'ve posted up one picture of most of the cars in the paddock in the afternoon, parked up during a read flag incident. In frame is samoht, nutty_chappie, sagar and GreySilver Beast.

Weather was fantastic for the time of year; warm, little or no wind, dry all day (apart from 10 minute attempt at some drizzle at the lunch break!). Not too many red flags either - and we were responsible for at least one of them when nutty_chappie decided on using a tyre wall to re-design his bodywork :o Luckily, the car was still driveable and now has a certain "street urban" look to it - from the driver\'s side anyway!

I hope to post up a short in-car video later.....

Roll on Brands Hatch :Thumbs-up

Got home last night after a great weekend, had an awesome time at Cadwell :D

Having instruction mid-morning made a huge  difference to starting to unlock this track and get a flow going.   Turning into the uphill left at the end of the main straight (Coppice) at 100mph,  and sweeping through into the right over the crest, felt awesome.  The FD is great with the sequential twins, great grip and balance and always responsive on the throttle.

Car behaved perfectly and I was able to take a few guys out for passenger rides, one quote \'Alton Towers has got nothing on this\' ;)

All the photos I got are here, including a sequence of an unlucky MX-5 driver:

Big thanks to Malcolm for organising the trip, it\'s far more fun going as a group than alone, your efforts really made for a great day out for all of us :Thumbsup!

Shaun

You would\'ve enjoyed it Shaun!

The MX-5 driver couldn\'t remember exactly what happened, but it wasn\'t over the Mountain or Hall Bends, or the Hairpin. It was on the exit of the next corner, Barn, leading onto the lower straight. Very odd, as this is not normally a difficult corner, with plenty of room on the exit. I was on the track just ahead of him, so I didn\'t see the incident, but saw the red flags at the end of Park Straight. By the time I\'d got to the straight out of Mansfield, leading to the Mountain, I could see the recovery vehicle orange and medical blue lights flashing just out of the exit to Barn. It didn\'t look as though he\'d gone straight on at the bend, but must have lost it somewhere on the exit. Really quite bizarre how he\'d managed to end up, upside down on top of the tyrewall. But the rollcage did an excellent job :Thumbs-up

As posted up on the RX8OC:

Comments on the trackday, in no particular order;
1. Briefing from Steve Hewston was one of the best I\'ve experienced.
2. My breakfast bacon roll and coffee, consumed during the briefing, were top-notch.
3. Track marshalling and clearance after red flags was up to the usual very high standard at MSV operated tracks.
4. The FREE instruction session was a MASSIVE bonus on a £120 day. If you knock off the £20 (minimum) that would normally have cost, then the day was only £100  :Thumbs-up  One might have thought that such free tuition might have been with less experienced instructors, but no, I managed to get Andrew Creighton, who runs the MotorSportVision ARDS test centres at Cadwell and Snetterton. He was BY FAR the best instructor I\'ve had sitting in the passenger seat. He spent an hour with me in all, as my track session ran into the lunch break and we were chatting about many things motorsport related after the track session ended. I was chuffed when he asked, less than a minute into the track session, "do you race?" When I said "no", he said "why not?" At the end of the session he said if that had been the ARDS track test I would have passed with no problems :D
5. It was great we were all able to park up together in the paddock - well done to Bob for marking out the territory before the main troops arrived  :Thumbs-up It made for a very social day where we could chat, help one another out and share advice. I had a pair of lads park up next to me with a Renault Clio who politely asked to borrow my jack. Got chatting to them during the day and it transpires they live about 5 miles from me in another part of Colchester; what a coincidence.
6. I was pleased to help out Jo, a friend of Iain\'s, by sitting in the passenger seat of Iain\'s car for her first every drive in Iain\'s car and her first ever session on track  :D  She improved immensely during the 15 minutes or so we were out there and was very good at taking in and implementing instructions. She had a huge smile at the end and I think she enjoyed it! Respect to Iain for trusting Jo and me with his car  =D>
7. I got chatting Nick Dunn, the driver of the MX-5 with the "Gulf" paintwork in the morning, as it was clear he was very fast on the track (left me standing  :oops). He drives in the Max5racing series. I then got offered a session in the passenger seat and what a hoot that was - great driver and very good car control. I was therefore very relieved at the end of the day to learn he was fine after the "car upside down on tyrewall" incident posted earlier.

Roll on Brands Hatch, but I need fresh brake pads on the front before then, methinks a call to MRP is next on my list :Laugh

Finally, here\'s a rough edit from my dashcam of various rotaries spotted during the day see if I caught you in there  :cool

Sounds like a really good day. Hopefully I\'ll work my fueling issue out soon and get back out on track !

Is it the same Nick of MOT too, had a passenger ride with him on a very wet mallory and was amazed at his car control !

You are thinking of Nick Dougill of Mazdaontrack, who also races MX-5\'s. It was a friend of his, Nick Dunn, who crashed this week.

Both are excellent drivers. Nick Dunn\'s crash came right at the end of the day and one possibility is that his tyres had "gone off". Nick Dunn did say to me in the morning that the Nankang tyres used in the race series do warm up and become effective quickly, but also go "off" quickly too! Mere speculation of course, but his level of car control displayed in the morning makes me think he had an issue with the car or tyres which led to the incident.

I missed you Jim :( - I did think about you when at Cadwell as you\'ve been with us there many times before. I missed chasing you around the circuit too, losing you on the straights and catching up a bit in the twisty bits :D

I hope you get your car sorted soon and hope to see you again early next year!
