Title: Cost of a Decent FD As of 2014
Post by: PurcyP on July 09, 2014, 08:01:48 PM
Hi all.

If you have seen my intro thread then you\'ll know I own a RX8 and wish to own a FD.

Prices i have seen of FD\'s fluctuate from complete heaps, to potentials and then the complete dreamers, but for a decent un-abused sample what sort of money are we talking?

The RX8 was a completely different ball game as I purchased mine at £1500 with 2 owners i am the third, prices for rx8\'s are just rock bottom thanks to various factors.

The plan is to really save up as much as I can and then if needs be sell the rx8 to fund the rest?
before any comments of "you cant afford it so you wont be able to afford tax, insurance etc so dont bother" my tax works differently etc so I wouldnt worry about the running costs i got that covered!

So yea for a unmolested example what we talking? ive seen one on piston heads which has either sold or the ad has timed out at £4,600 fresh import not even registered and a complete rebuild, and another unmolested example in red for £6700 but in reality what is the real going price?

Cheers all.

I would say that to answer your question,  it\'s going to be a bit of you get what you pay for as regards condition and the health of the running gear of the car

There\'s no reason why a really good FD won\'t still fetch the £6700 you mention

Hope you find what your looking for :Thumbsup!

Thanks Clive.

I did wonder if that was the case, was just looking through my messages as I did speak to an importer and he said the same in regards to prices being all over the place.

So really its £4000 to £7000 ..importer did say £5000 to £6000 will get a decent one imported but again he said prices all over the place ..

Looks like i have a lot of saving to do lol, be a good exercise in restraint and discipline.
Thats the trouble when you lead my life, full of appointments and nothing to do, its difficult not to spend money :/ ..oh well

just to add on to the comment above.

5-6k will get you a real dog of an import buddy.

prices are over the place as it totally depends on condition as with everything in life.

I think saying a real dog is a bit harsh. I\'ve seen a few good rx7s come over recently . Especially now the exchange rate is in our favour.

Looking at Pistonheads, I would say £6k is probably about the entry point to have a fair chance of finding a good one.  The fact that the odd car appears at £4k or so doesn\'t mean you could expect to find a good one at that price.

That said, there are still cars that come up for sale cheaply when the seller hasn\'t noticed the recent rise in values, so if you\'re patient you might be lucky enough to get a good car for a bit less.

If you\'re buying at the cheap end of the market you need to be doubly careful to find one that hasn\'t been bodged or neglected.

i work for Newera Japan, and its REALLY hard to find good, clean rust free RX7s

its the same old argument,

condition vs cost/budget

we have supplied a number of FDs in the last couple of months, some being 1 owner cars.

they are as clean as possible,

but all are £10k upwards

having just sourced my own FD, (its in the projects section)i can tell you it was around £15k, but specification & fresh build by Knightsports drove the price.

£6k is very low end of the market to import.

the types of FDs the japanese wont even touch.

Well if £6000 isnt enough to import ill look for sellers over here then

some rust etc isnt a big problem ..it is a 20 year old car, depends what part of japan it comes from i guess ..but the first thing id do when i get a RX7 regardless if i imported it or not, as long as the body panels arent holding on via rot, ill take it to a rust buster firm and have it completely treated and under coated

be kind of fruitless seeing whats available as of right now..as I do not have £5000+ but the main point of the topic was to see what ball park figure to set out..seems like really £5000 plus
:( wish i did have the money right now though lol

really depends on what type of car you looking for

Red is always bottom of the pile on colour spec (its not a colour the japanese want)

work it back, from K\'sm/condition import charges etc

£6k is not going to buy alot.

if that is your type of budget, then i would suggest looking in the UK for cars which are already over here and sellers wanting to sell (and quick)

This is the type of quality your looking at for not much more

I\'ve always found silver is by far the least sought after colour, red has always sold well especially to the Germans :D

I agree Dave, Black and White for UK and red for the Germans!  Silver does seem to be least popular over here.

I\'m told it\'s all down to \'Vin Diesel\' in the original Fast & Furious movie :Giggle
I remember my first RX7, that was red and my mates used to call me \'Dai Petrol\' :Laugh:Laugh:Laugh

I\'ve been looking to import an FD myself, hence why I registered for the forum. I\'ve been doing a lot of research to understand the costs. Japanese used cars are cheap, but you need to pay import duty and VAT as well as agent and shipping fees, de-registration in Japan and re-registration with the DVLA in the UK, fitting of an alarm system, converting the speedo and foglight fitment.

All in all the ballpark figure I\'m budgeting against is £12000 for a stock 1999 RX7 Type RS with low miles. I\'m sure you can get a slightly older one for less, but the fees stay about the same.

I\'d be very concerned about importing an FD for less than £5k, if it can be done at all!

Again, I say this as a non-owner (yet).

I\'ve found this website quite good for getting an idea of what japanese action results tend to be.
http://www.exportcar.jp/en/component/auctions/?auction=&lot=&maker_id=3&model_id=446&year_from=&year_to=&engine_from=&engine_to=&transmission=MT&shift=&mileage_from=&mileage_to=&start_price_from=&start_price_to=&colors=all&gradings=%2A%2A%2A%2C1%2C2%2C3%2C3.5%2C4%2C4.5%2C5%2CR%2CRA%2CS&mode=search&sort_field=&sort_order=&limit=20&view=auctlots (http://www.exportcar.jp/en/component/auctions/?auction=&lot=&maker_id=3&model_id=446&year_from=&year_to=&engine_from=&engine_to=&transmission=MT&shift=&mileage_from=&mileage_to=&start_price_from=&start_price_to=&colors=all&gradings=%2A%2A%2A%2C1%2C2%2C3%2C3.5%2C4%2C4.5%2C5%2CR%2CRA%2CS&mode=search&sort_field=&sort_order=&limit=20&view=auctlots)

Based on what I found I gave myself a budget of 1.3 Million Yen, about £7500 with the current exchange rate. I believe the cost of getting that car to the UK breaks down like this:

Car base cost: £7500
Auction transport: £50
Shipping by container: £750
Duty (10% on everything so far): £830
VAT (20% on top of that): £1660
Customs Agent Fee: £75
Speedo conversion: £150
UK Foglight fitment: £60
DVLA Registration: £55
License Plates: £25
MOT: £35

Total cost: £11190

That does not include alarm fitment or undersealing the car.

Going through a known importer such as JM-Imports is slightly more expensive but does give some peace of mind and is what I\'ll be doing.

Valuation on these cars seems to be an absolute minefield. This has ultimately put a downer on my Rotary experience over the years as you\'re met with frustration in getting people to realise a truly great example...and difficulty to part with money for a such a car.

My 2009 RX8 R3 had fantastic compression, low miles, perfect ignition with new 100B coil packs yet all you\'d ever get is people punting you in the balls price wise  for your pride and joy. Finally got out of that and into arguably the best FC3C in the country again with fantastic service history, completely original to be met with huge difficulties when trying to sell.

All i would say is, pay what you are happy to part with for the best original example you can. But be absolutely prepared to fight your corner for it\'s value when you come to sell it. Car\'s from reputable folks like Newera will hold their money far better than most, but the rotary powered cars from Mazda still have this edge of mysticism and magic around them which makes them incredibly difficult to sell to anybody else but a rotary fanatic..

What i highlighted in bold there pretty much sums up why i made this thread, you hit the nail on the head with this post as a whole.

I can see selling my RX8 being an absolute nightmare as its going to automatically carry stigma and somehow be worth £800 instead of £1800 for example purely "just because"

RX7s i can see as a buyer a different minefield, hopefully it doesnt happen but i am wary of people selling a FD that is "the dogs" but in reality is absolutely stuffed and i dont mean the obvious modified examples either.

But on the same merit my attitude as a buyer is fair and just, i dont rock up to a viewing waste time and then low ball, ive had that far too many times as a seller, if the seller can knock off a few pennies, amazing thats all gravy.

Think really my best bet is to hold on the rx8 for as long as i need to and when im ready to actively buy a rx7 and have enough cash to swing under or over my set amount ill part with the rx8 to add to it.

Well there goes my hope of using the RX8 as a healthy chunk towards An FD3S

..some moron decided to park on my car rather than next to it whilst i was in the bank
and i stupidly decided to park out of view of EVERY camera
