Title: Dead rotor?? Please tell me otherwise
Post by: luckyNot on April 18, 2014, 06:11:36 PM
Hi.

having spent over 3k on repairs (brakes, tyres, alloys, tracking, not tuning) and stuff in the last 9 months I finally got my rx7 out for run. She is largely stock, still runs twins, sports exhaust, air filters and chipped (but I dont know the mapping, from power still around 270bhp I would guess). Recently compression tested and scored over 7 on all four checks.
I filled up with Shell V power Nitro and went for a spin. 20 mins of fast back road driving followed. She felt good, although initially stuttered a little. Oiol pressure and temperature all good.

Then, after 20 mins, at about 60mph in 3rd she starts to run erratically. I stop at a junction and the car stalls. It takes 3 attempts to restart. The idle is terrible. I have to keep throttle on to stop it stalling. I limp the 3 miles home. Pull up, the car struggles to turn over, almost like half the engine is not firing. I have some black smoke out of the exhaust. I park and let it cool

I have now moved my car in to the garage. The car does not idle properly, the exhaust smells heavily of petrol.

What do I do now? Is this rebuild time...???? Any advice welcome

Hi mate. easiest way to comfirm weather you lost compression on 1 housing is to remove fuel pump relay. remove spark plugs from each housing in turn and turn over. You should get regular PSSSSTTTT noises. If quiet then bad news. do 1 housing at a time else youll here compression from the good 1. make sure leads are outta way and not connected to sparks. mark up as well so easy to put back on. Fingers x summit else.

Read a few more posts and found reference to the pipe leading to the boost sensor becoming detached. Checked this before heading off the weekend and ...
BINGO!  I cannot believe a pipe so small (about 7mm) can make such a difference

Time to enjoy the weekend!!
