Title: Where is best to top up coolant (fd)
Post by: Ashp1989 on April 14, 2014, 03:49:57 PM
Hi. I\'m new to these engines and was wondering were do I top up my coolant? The coolant buzzer came on yesterday and I don\'t want to drive it now untill it\'s topped up. It\'s a 1993 fd3s. Cheers.

Hi mate fill both tanks to the brim with 50% blue af and water....(distilled best). There is an overflow tank under drivers head light and works on the theory when hot and pressurised vents to this and under vacuum draws back in. Dont get the caps messed up 1 spring 1 solid and i cant remember which 1 goes where and i always get it wrong so not even gonna go there LOL! I ended up dabbing paint to mark them. IF she needs bleeding use an upturned coke bottle with bottom cut off you can run from cold and top up whilst burping pipes....also a champayne test at same time.

On a side note as your new to rotarys. They do run hot so have some fun with the throttle and then let her cool for a bit with some cruising. Check your undertray as well is nice and secure as this directs cool fresh air to your rad.  ....also a shot of water wetter or similar also good in the coolant system. And oil is also part of the cooling system check your oil coolers are nice and clear and the plastic ducts are again secure.
And enjoy!

Cheers boosted. I\'m asking because the add coolant was bleeping at me when I start it from cold. I do need to duct the intercooler off aswell as it\'s a Xs power 1. Pip did say that they work well when ducted properly. I\'m gonna get a good service soon. Plugs, oil, coolant flush. Brakes are mint. I had a little boost today. I love the low end torque :)

If the levels are good the sensor is known to be a pita ! If your intending to service yourself give Clive a ring at Mazda Rotary Parts He will have all the parts required at very reasonable prices...your average motor factors wont have the parts and be ££££.

Top it up from the cap on the water pump. That\'s it. Not the overflow and not the AST.

The one in the centre of engine is the refill / top up point also the cap does not have a spring its just a solid cap.

The one next to the battery is the AST which should not need to be remove.

The one one on the left by the head light is the overflow tank and has the level check in the cap. Do not top up here only the centre one.

Hope this helps....
