Title: MOT fail
Post by: dap1977 on April 08, 2014, 03:52:57 PM
Hello,
Well its my first MOT as an RX7 owner and I was dreading it.
Good bit, the car itself is great flew through, no advisories.
Bad bit, what it has failed on is the emission\'s.
I know from the posts I have  looked at its a bit of a black art. But I am not sure where to go with it.
After arguing with the tester I managed to get them to test it on a old fashioned non cat test. The limit for CO is 3.5 and mine was reading 5.
Tester told me to check the Lambda sensor as it seemed to him to be over fuelling(smelt). When I got home I found that the sensor was disconnected. Also I noticed that one of the air pump wires were broken. And finally the large pipe on the bottom of the intercooler had come off. This answered one question as it was down on power on the way to the garage.
Sorry for the ramble, but does anyone more experienced think the emissions failure could be down to one or more of the issues mentioned??

The car is on a standard ecu. The only mods are a high flow cat and 3" cat back exhaust. Also I have fitted  Apexi twin cone air filters. Other than that it standard as far as I know.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated as always

Daniel

if its standard , fix all those issues and nip back to the testing station or any garage nearby and ask them to do a quick free measurement on emissions to see if the fixes you made has altered the mixture. If you had a hose off the intercooler that definately wont help. Most testing stations are ok and they would let you do a quick free measurment co check to see if you will be ok for retest. ( on a non cat test that is as it takes less thane 2 mins )

As said Cataclean has helped many Rotarys also  Give  the car a good hard run before driving it back to the station

So,

I fixed the previously menchoned issues and chucked in some cat clean.

Result: Flew through the retest!!

CO: 0.1and HC: 60 (limits are CO 3.5 and HC 1300)

Well pleased, thank you very much for all the advice

Daniel
