Sounds like fuel starvation, blocked idle jets , low fuel level, one of several fuel related issues.

Check your fuel filter (in the trunk on a RX4). There may be an inline one close the carb.
Also fuel pump or as Jon suggested, carb jets. Certainly fuel related anyway. Crud in fuel tank, water in fuel??

I just rebuilt the carb. I replaced the jets and I put in a new fuel pump and two filters. How often should you replace the plugs? I was told by the previous owner that this motor eats up plugs since it is ported and jetted. Also, what size should the jets be?
