Afternoon all,
New owner here, I\'ve said hello here (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81362), feel free to swing by and say hi!
I\'ve been on many car forums over the years, and never quite had the time to do a proper project thread, I\'m going to attempt to do one here.
In my welcome thread, I\'ve purchased a RX7 that is worse than swiss cheese underneath, properly properly rusted to holy hell. I\'d said that I was going to repair it, but unfortunately, it\'s worse than we could see when it was up on the ramp. We\'ve stripped the shell down and it\'s gone, truly and utterly beyond repair that anyone would deem economical. Here is the sorry looking beast:
Where does that leave me then? Good engine (lots of receipts) and nothing to put it in.
Not any more! I went down to see a guy called Tool (who\'s apparently banned from here - good start to my RX7 career - associating with known felons but there we go) in Maidenhead and picked up this beast:

It\'s a very late FC cab and it\'s so clean. Soooooo clean and pretty well specced - it\'s got cruise control (although I assume that\'ll die once the manual box goes in), air con (will probably be removed - who needs air con in a cabrio!), headrest speakers so clean door panels etc. Also happened to be missing an engine which suited my needs fantastically well. A number of pounds changed hands and I came to collect it a couple of weeks later. It\'s now sitting on my drive waiting for work to begin, the project officially starts at the beginning of April while I accumulate parts.
So far I\'ve got:
• Cusco handbrake knob
• Cusco brake master cylinder stopper
• Cusco front and rear strut braces
• Super Now! tie rod end set
• Uras Super Lock tie rod set
• Super Now! Response Up! air pump blanking plates kit
• APP Stainless Brake Lines F/R
• EBC Pads and Discs F/R
• Caliper rebuild kits F/R
• Sard magnetic oil filter
• Billion Super Low temp thermostat
• Trust/Greddy Rotary engine oil
• NGK platinum plugs
• Walbro 255 fuel pump
• AEM UEGO wideband AFR gauge
• Proper Mocal oil cooler & filter relocation kit
• Italvolanti wooden wheel & leather gear gaitor for that classy touch
• Blitz 75mm boost gauge with Attain dash holder (although I might go with a 60mm Illumi Drive with Greddy holder)
• HSD DT coilovers
• Centreline Auto Drag billet wheels 15x8 ET-19 15x10 ET-38
• Blitz mesh air filter
• Blitz dump valve
• Mitsi Evo front mount intercooler and pipework which will be converted to a v-mount setup
All brand new & geniune (except the intercooler) - accept no immitations!
So, all in all, pretty damn excited and I\'m hoping to be the owner of a very very cool FC once it\'s all put together.
I\'ll keep the updates rolling in as and when they come, in the meantime I can be found browsing the technical sections as this is my first Rotary engined car!
Cheers,
Rob.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh you got it then
I was trying to get the gearbox off him
I think our paths might of crossed on a prev thread , but i thought i would post up here anyways :)
If you want shut of the auto box , just let me know :)
Out of interest , did you get the Evo IC with the car , or from somewhere else ??
I had one YEARS ago that i sold with my car .. wondering if its the same one ?
Welcome back buddy... Sorry to hear your first attempt didn\'t work out too well.
Glad you jumped back in, and looks like you been shopping already.
Gooooooooooooooooooo Rob!
Looks like your already having fun. Which it is all about at the end of the day. Witht he spec your talking about this will be a very nice FC once done. Keep the pics coming as we all like perv on FC Porn!
Ade
Hi guys,
Sorry for lack of update, been waiting for a Cortina to clear out of the workshop before this can crack on.
As soon as the project starts and the gearbox is out of the black one, it\'s yours grinder. I\'ve no idea on the condition but it\'s yours for a couple of pints at the bar. Evo intercooler came from eBay, I\'m still undecided on the horizontal mount as it\'ll mean using the heavier non turbo bonnet so I can cut a vent in without it looking weird with the standard one, I may use in a mid mount vertical set up and retain the standard bonnet.
I\'ll admit I\'m quite ashamed to have given up so easily with the white one, it\'s never truly beyond repair but it would have been a total new floor and I haven\'t got the time or money for that to be honest, I want to get it done for this summer and enjoy it straight away. Buying the black shell is cheating but totally worth it economically, it was too clean to ignore
Add a 300mm Personal steering wheel (I\'ve also elected to use the black interior from the white car, extremely pedantic but I couldn\'t find a nice enough gear knob in the right colour wood..), Nardi Prestige gear knob, old skool Apexi AVCD & SAFC, Banzai racing double alternator pulley kit, Godspeed (eugh, but £400~ on the equivalent Koyo seems a bit steep) radiator, Samco hoses and giant Kenlowe fan.
Pretty much done on the parts front really. Looking forward to it.
Just keep me informed pal and i will try and sort something out for collection ( or failing that a LONG drive to london to collect ! )
Im sure you will have loads of fun swapping the bits over :)
So whats the plan with the white one then ?
Oh yeah, just noticed you\'re in Chorley! Friend of mine lives in the Lakes, I\'m sure there could be something we could do with that.
Plan with the white one.. hmm. Erm, strip it to it\'s absolute core and keep anything that isn\'t rotten for spares for the black one I guess. I won\'t be using it but I\'ll make sure as much as possible of it lives on in one way shape or form.
yeah the lakes is only prob 50 miles away , where you are prob 250 ish ?
i think you should go and visit your mate with a gear box in the boot ;)
Sounds like a plan!
it does ???? :eek
Yeah! I go up there pretty often, I don\'t mind the drive.
if thats the case i could meet you at a motorway junction or services
I only live a 5 min drive from the junction anyways
And you would get more than beer tokens for your effort :)
Sounds good to me, I\'ll let you know when we\'re on. It\'s a shame it hasn\'t become available a bit sooner because he\'s down this weekend, could have stuck it in the boot of his SX. Nevermind!
Anyway, all I require now is tyres, got to fit the arches and measure the wheels up and then I can get them ordered. I\'ve got a budget of about 300 for tyres, I can fit them myself, any recommendations on what to get? Difficult to go wrong with a major brand I\'d expect. Car will be fast road, no track use.
if there is no engine in the car , it should be a case of prop off , couple gearbox mounts and it should fall off :)
Ok maybe a few wires and pipes aswell ! LOL
But happy to work around you .. car hasnt moved in 18 months -> 24 months , so no real rush to be honest .. and i have no idea of the state of the engine either
I\'d love to tell you I\'d take it out this weekend for you but that would be an utter lie ;) sorry chap.
lol ... its fine pal , dont worry about it
Like i said , no rush :)
Stripping the white motor has begun... Excited :D
ohh i bet it is :)
The project rumbles on in the background, the white car is fully stripped and the black one is now in to have anything refitted. My mechanic sent me this this morning, I think this will be the most outrageous car I\'ve ever owned. Many more pics to come.

Wheel is a 15x10 et-38 autodrag. I\'ll get this updated further Monday.
not sure if that is legal mate :)
Any news on the auto box ?
Will be with massive overfenders and touch of stretch! Is this a purist forum, is that sickening you? Haha.
Auto box is either out or will be out over the next couple of days. Any trips to London planned? I\'ll be coming up north some time within the next couple of months I\'d imagine if not.
London .. nope .. only every been once :(
Im sure we can work something out though
Im on with building a summer house at the mo .. so no real rush at the mo , so even if its a few months .. be right :)
Bit of progress, black one\'s in now the white one is completely disassembled.
Some interior pieces being swapped, pedal box etc. Engine bay cleaned up and rear lights put into place.

Little more progress
Grinder, gearbox is out and in my shed. I spoke with my northern friend yesterday and we\'ve agreed one way or another we\'ll get it up North, he may come down here before I go up and if he does he\'ll bring it back with him and you can collect from Kendal-ish area if you like? I\'ll let you know what\'s happening though.
If you still want it that is..
defo mate .. kendal is perfectly doable :)
if we can pull this off , i will be forever in your debt !
I\'m in Kendal so if either of you are passing and Grinder/Stu is tied up your more than welcome to drop it off with me until he can pick it up.
Ade
P.S and brews are free :)
It might also give me some inspiration to get mine back on the road.
Nice one, thank you.
Not only that, but the pop ups are up, the engine bay is ready for the engine and the engine is ready for the engine bay! WOOO!

your making some good progress there
Aye, pretty happy so far.
Tyres, the last piece of the puzzle, were ordered yesterday. Went for Conti\'s, I normally can\'t afford them in the sizes I\'ve used in the past but on the 15s they were cheap enough. Happy days.
Engine/gearbox in and mounted.

Had an eek moment earlier where the manual prop was too short (car started life as an auto) but the auto prop fits just fine luckily.
are you swapping the diffs .. im sure they are different between auto and manual ?
and i like the piping on the cone filter
what are the 2 blue pipes by the front coil pack ?
I\'m hoping one of the 2 I\'ve got both fits and is an LSD lol, you happen to know which models were equipped with LSDs?
I prefer a hard pipe for intake, sounds better IMO.
The 2 blue pipes are Earls AN10 oil lines. Oil cooler setup is all Mocal and Earls. I had a Chinese oil pipe burst on me a few years back I\'ve been copping the proper gear ever since. Buy cheap, buy twice!
I\'m also now a paid up member on here :)
LSD .. no idea matey :(
And the intake sound .. interesting theory
100% sounds better, try it!
i have the cone filter .. just no 4 inch piping ( of how ever big it is )
It\'s 3 inch piping in the photo but any\'ll do as long as you have the silicone adapters. Budget around £30 in total, it\'s a good mod that gives a nice growl.
To each his own though!
might have to look into it one day .. MOT is looming in 2 months .. have to see how that pans out first :(
and might have to start to use the thing .. its been stood for a few months now and not used :(
Aww, I\'m sure it would appreciate a drive!
In other news, today brings more expenditure and waiting around. Diff bushes are all shot to :censored::censored::censored::censored: and according to Mr Parts Man at Mazda Romford there isn\'t a set in the whole of Europe. I\'m now £223.06 lighter and settling down to a 10 day wait. Fantastic.
After a frustrating morning getting shafted by the V-Mount set up that now looks destined to become a Front Mount setup some suspension bushes were done so it felt like the day wasn\'t wasted.

looking good :)
So, front mounting the intercooler would have meant routing the pipe either through the chassis rails or using about 20ft of piping and having to relocate the battery so we decided to persevere with the v-mount route.
Intercooler was positioned and front bar notched (it will be beefed back up later down the line, we don\'t leave :censored::censored::censored::censored: weak and flapping)

Cracked on with making the mounts for the radiator, you\'ll notice the pipes have been cut off the radiator and will be TIG\'d back on in the correct position later.

Yes, that would be helpful. I\'m sure it will be once more gas is acquired, it\'ll soon be pretty obvious if it isn\'t.
ha ha ha
but yeah , you will soon know about it

Now come on, this is pretty good!
Yep it\'s a pain trying to squeeze stuff in with the PS pump in the normal high position, you didn\'t fancy lowering it I take it. What are you doing for ducting as that\'s key to a V mount working?
Didn\'t even consider it to be honest with you. Pipe was easy enough to chop up and put together.
We\'ve got a load of ali sheet for the ducting, not entirely sure how we\'re putting it together yet but ducting is a major consideration for sure!
Your mounts make life a little difficult but I\'m sure you\'ll work around it.......... I\'m doing similar but with larger cooler and rad and have combined the side ducts with mounts.
I usually do! I\'ll post up pictures of whatever solution we come up with for future reference.
loving the bendy pipe :)
Why are people just :censored::censored::censored::censored: at life? Why?
Ring up Mazda Romford about 2 weeks to order new bushes for the rear diff, they don\'t have any in Europe and they\'ll take 10 days to come in from Japan, I give them my card details and he tells me the payment has gone through all fine.
I check last week and they tell me yeah mate they\'re on the way all ordered we\'ll call you when they come in. Surprise surprise I don\'t get a call this week so I call them up this morning and they tell me actually, we haven\'t taken the payment, we haven\'t ordered your parts.
How hard is it? You have one function in life, I call you and order parts, you place the order with Japan, I collect them. He was apologetic but I\'ve now been sat waiting for parts for 2 weeks that haven\'t even been ordered, properly shafted my timeline that has.
Rant over :censored::censored::censored::(:(:(
Make up for this mornings balls up at Mazda

Also tried the hood for the first time, it works, this is the first time it\'s been all the way down since I\'ve had the car.
And now moving on to wiring the gadgets and gizmos. Unfortunately, I had to can the (completely and utterly useless but fantastically cool) ARC downforce meter as there wasn\'t room. I\'ve also bought Stack electronic Oil Temp, Oil Pressure & Water Temp gauges along with a Revotec fan controller. My credit card is screaming for mercy.

now that i like
are they custom ??
Glad you approve! They were on the white car in a bodged up low slung set up (previous owner had removed the gibbons that made the lights go up n down) but I love pop ups so they\'ve been worked into the standard housings. AFAIK they\'re not an off the shelf item.
I have news RE your gearbox by the way, you around 5-8th of September? I\'ll be driving up to the lakes on the 5th.
Gibbons lol. Gubbins* damn iPhone!
yeah i should be , there is nothing planned i know that :)

bad timing for rotorstock eh :(
MOT on the same day
Don\'t think I\'ll make it, MOT\'s at 12 :(
shame pal.....
I\'ve had a look on the map with a mind to attempt to push the MOT forwards a bit but to be honest it\'s just too far to go on a car that\'s only just been put together and not shaken down.
Didn\'t manage to get this to MOT on Saturday in the end. Keeps flooding but it isn\'t down to compression, had it tested properly and it\'s alright, not the best but far from dead. We think an injector may be stuck open so sending them off to get tested today.
Oh the joys of modified car ownership!
