Hi guys. My first post on here. Iv currently got a subaru impreza type r import which I\'m selling and looking at buying this 1993 import fd3s. It\'s not been drove for 18months, I don\'t no if it\'s been started in that time either (I could be wrong)
The bodywork is mint, and I mean mint. The guy who has it owns his own bodyshop and I know him quite well and he takes pride in all his cars, the car looks faded but that\'s because it\'s been stood for sooo long and gathered all sorts of elements and dust etc.
He\'s took the side skirts off it and welded up the holes as he thought it looked better without them. Got the big spoiler on the back.
Got service history
Not been rebuilt
Got a full exhaust system with decats all the way, updated intercooler
He did day it\'s got a apexi fc but needs to be set up properly.
My question is what do you think it\'s worth?
And what would the worse I can be expecting with it being sat for so long?
He did say he\'s going to get it started and checked over before he sells it, I won\'t tell you how much he wants for it untill I get some replies because I want t no what you guys think as it\'s would be my first rex. I have read up on the maintenance etc and it doesn\'t bother me that much as it won\'t be a daily
This is the car in question

And he did have the seat re-trimmed in leather. If ther is anything else you can spot in the engine bay then that would be good. Cheers ash.
Has it been ran in the past 18 months?

I\'m not sure. I don\'t think it has. But he did say it hasn\'t got a lot of fuel in it which is a good thing. Obviously it needs a service. But he\'s going to see wha it needs first.
Ok bud just they dont like being sat with fluids in. Possible that the fuel/ coolant has attacked the seals car will run but water system will pressurise which is a rebuild. If your serious get it checked over/serviced by a rotary specialist as a few quid spent now could save you the cost of a rebuild. defo get 1 there awesome but tread carefully.

Thanks. Iv heard they don\'t like being sat. Sad really as it\'s such an immaculate car. I can\'t afford a rebuild for another year is say. If it needs 1 il walk away. Il get it checked over definatley. But they are few and far between. The nearest 1 is wgt developments. It\'s not too far but would they come out to have a look? Obviously I\'d pay them but I don\'t think they would?? Iv heard the apex seals go and need a Rebuild, hope not though :(
It needs to be at project price tbh...and a gamble taken...worth givin them a ring and asking.
He said he would be happy with 5k. It did seem a good price, but now it doesn\'t as I don\'t want to spend that much money yet. My budget will be around the 5k mark.
Too much as is...12 months mot fresh service and apexi mapped . With a good compression test result.
5k bud see a rotary specialist youll get a lot of rx7 for that. Put a wanted in the for sale section below. thats just too much as the car stands now.
Theres a few guys on here mate that sell them put a request in and youll see you can get alot more for money.
I Idealy wanted an fd3. Such a shame because the bodywork and interior is immaculate :( I can have a work with the guy. You never no, the engine could be fine when it\'s been checked over. Iv looked in the for sale section on the 3rd generations and ther doesn\'t seems that many.
If you put up a wanted mate they will come outta the word work so to speak.Blitzboy on here is getting a silver 1 ready forsale that i know off.

Ok thanks for your help. I don\'t want to put 1 up yet as il have this 1 checked over by a specialist, have a compression test done and go from there. Might get it at a project price u never no. So I don\'t want to mess people about by putting 1 up yet. Might be worth a punt though and see what\'s out there. Cheers. Ash.
No problem mate.
What would you be looking to pay for it? If it needs a rebuild, or if it\'s fine and just needs a service?
Of the top of my head 2.5 to 3k. As is mate.its got the apexi good bodywork rims etc.
If it needs rebuild 2k ish but just service mot and remap 3k but thats the gamble. Mot could throw up lots of issues. If it was me id be 2k offer as is lowloader away and take my chances.
Right ok. Il put that across to him and see what he says. I thought it was worth 5k with the low milage, bodywork etc. is there any way of telling that the engine is fine and it doesn\'t need a rebuild?
Compression test. Get it running. Mileage is low but if that apexi not set up right for the mods then mileage counts for nothing.
It\'s not been turned over at all in 18months then it will very likely need a rebuild. I\'ve seen freshly rebuilt fds with very clean exteriors go for 4.5k so IMO 5k is far too much without a clean bill of health from wgt at cost to the seller.
With that said the price of clean fds is on the rise
Quote from: boosted;875283Of the top of my head 2.5 to 3k. As is mate.its got the apexi good bodywork rims etc.
You are brave to offer such money mate...but I would not pay more than 1k to 1300 pounds. Rebuild cost, run in fuel cost, Remap and if its not a straight forward rebuild, then extra cost for getting rebuild parts will shoot the price up.
My input is mate, buy a sort after FD and enjoy it. 99% of the projects never gets completed simply because people lose interest. There are plenty of cars out there for sale.
There is one Silver FD owned by Rob and its immaculate. I guess he can let it go for 5.5 to 6K. Its a sort after FD and it would not cost you anything near the cost of making this FD fully functional.
I would say, if you dont want the headache, walk away. Buy a car with proven results and your FD ownership would last alot longer ;).
I am talking from experience as I own 5 FD3S\'s ;) and I know how these things empty your wallets before you even know it.
I hope this info helps

I Idealy wanted a red or maybe a black fd3. Iv had a few silver cars, and my current scooby is silver. Lovely colour but I want something that stands out when it\'s been polished like the vintage red. I did say to the guy I would give him close to 5k if everything is sweet.
Right...if I got some specialist to have a look at it. Eg. Get someone down from wgt or get it towed/flatbed to them. If there a definate way that they can tell if he engine is fine without ripping it apart? Would it be worth ringing wgt and asking their views on it? Thanks for you help, a lot more helpful than scoobynet when I was asking questions on there about my scoob, every1 thinks it\'s a joke!
If compression is in the 7\'s and there doesn\'t seem to be any water getting through the seals then it should be ok? I\'m not paying for the service mind, he is, or I am but this will reflect the price considerably. He is a decent bloke and did say he is going to see if it needs anything first before he sells it, which is decent of him. Just seems to be a good opportunity to miss out on such a nice car if I can get it a good price, if I get it for 2k and spent the rest on a rebuild then iv got a mint fd3 for 5k?

Mate, if you tow it to WGT and let Pip look at it, you will straight away get the idea whether the car is worth buying or not! As far buying it for 2k is concerned, my answer is, I wouldn\'t buy it for that price.
A standard rebuild cost you nearly 3k or normally 3k plus that\'s providing all the engine parts are in a good condition. Once, you start adding engine parts that\'s if they are not good, the cost begins to rise and you end up paying 4k or close to it. Don\'t for get, you have to run in the rebuild engine for 1000 miles and the fuel cost to run it in would be high too as normally people people use shell V power.
As I said, 1k to 1300 pounds is the max you can pay for this car! Or buy a rebuild car and just enjoy the summer:cheers

Thanks for your help. Is ther any chance that the engine could be fine? And just need a service? I was hoping someone specialist can come down and look at the car for me rather than me getting it towed spending more money. Iv been looking on the for sale section and ther doesn\'t seem to be any red fd3\'s. I\'m not a member on fduk yet so maybe Ther is some for sale on there? Il speak to the guy and explain what might/will need doing and see what he says. Can\'t see him letting it go for that price but he has to face the facts really, because another potential buyer will do the same, get it checked etc ....
It\'s a nice car mate, but to put it into perspective.....
I\'ve just paid 5k (two days ago) for a rebuilt, resprayed, immaculate fd3. Sure I know there\'s a few little niggles, few trim bits on the inside I might replace, might put different wheels on it and so on..... But it was exactly what I was after. I\'m also first reg keeper of it in the UK and the Dvla registered it as a 1.3 (bonus!)
5k for this is wayyyyy too much unless that engine is perfect.

I no what people are saying and I\'m going to go in with my head not my heart. Nothing needs doing to the car inside or out. It\'s perfect. Spoke to ppi today. It needs road testing he said. He said the water seals tend to go hard and break if left unused for a while. But is ther anyway of checking the condition of these? He getting the water system pressurised and a comp test done, along with all the usual checks. But this won\'t determine the condition only the seals will it? What if the compression is good and the water system/cooling system is fine? Where do I go from there?
End of the day, whatever you do - its a gamble with that car. Yeah, it might pay off and you get a great car but given its history (sitting doing nothing for 18 months) theres a very slim chance of that happening.
Everyone else is talking wise words. Thats why it took me 4 months to choose an FD. There was one I had my heart and mind set on, and despite loving it when I went to see, I used my head and held off. Much like the one youre looking at - it appeared perfect. I just did not have faith in the engine (and the body was a bit tatty in places). The heart of an FD is the engine..... if its knackd then walk away unless the price is right. If youre unsure of the engine in the slightest - walk away - you will not regret it in the long term.

I understand what everyone is saying and tbh I don\'t think il give more than 2k for it. But can\'t see him letting it go for that but that\'s up to him. I\'m in no rush to jump in for 1. I\'d have that 1 for the right price and if it does go bang then iv go the money for a rebuild. That\'s would be what I want. Don\'t think id get 1 for 5k in the same condition inside and out, but it\'s the engine. If the comp is good and the water system is good after a pressure test then were do I go from there? Iv explained the situation to him and he said he\'s going to get it checked out. I don\'t mind getting it towed to pip myself so I know myself off pip. But thanks for all the info, I would of gone in not knowing and had my wallet empty sooner than I would of known :Thumbs-up its good to be on a forum were people actually care and give advice instead of taking the pi ss
Well, at least you\'re listening to people. Theres nothing worse than folks coming on and asking questions, before disregarding any advice and doing their own thing.
My first point though is still applicable - yes you can get one in just as good nick for £5k. I done it just a few days ago.
I know the place i got mines from has a few others for sale starting around £4.5k......

I\'m always up for listening to people\'s views. Especially when I have not idea about something. I\'m in the manchester area so it might be to far for me. But I could give them a call and see what they have? Can you tell me the name of the place mate. Cheers.
It was Super 7 in Worthing - Near Brighton
Well - it will be a fair distance but again - perspective - I flew down from Edinburgh to Gatwick and got a train along to Worthing where the garage is just 5 minutes walk from the station.
Sure they had a black standard one in storage at the minute thats in good nick.
Right. Iv spoke to the guy selling the car. I said I want a compression test doing, I want the water system pressurised. A road test so boost pressure can be seen and boosting correctly, a service and I want an mot then we can go from ther. He is confident nothing will be wrong. If the engine is all fine and the water system seems water tight with no signs of leaking what would you be will to pay? He\'s had the car around 3 years, the mods haven\'t been on the car that long and it\'s not been driven in 18 months with the mods on. Where can I go from there if the car is fine? I promise this is the last question lol
If everything is perfect with a thumbs up from from pip , taking into account the clean interior and exterior then it\'s a 4k car for me. Max.
Just going of experience of standard oem body cars as it\'s my thing but still standard factory engines still need rebuilding at some point.
The car is immaculate inside and out. Fresh re trimmed leather seats. Had a respray 2 years ago and been dry stored. Nice rota gtr wheels, high spoiler on the back. Apexi ecu, uprated intercooler. Full exhaust system, air filters etc. need to get pip down if he would. I don\'t mind paying good money for him to come and have a look at it
Can someone tell me what bumper and spoiler is on it. Thanks.
Don\'t be blinded by the way a car looks, I was and it turned out it was a dog as it popped in less than 7hrs on the road... Dodgy Traders everywhere.. just make sure you do your research, and get people to look over it for you and if all is well, great :) ... If the chap is sure the car is fine, get him to cough up for checkovers etc... :)
There are traders that can do a rebuild for a lot less than 3 / 4k .
If it\'s a nice clean car and you like it. Don\'t listen to "it\'s only worth 1200 quid"
If your handy with the tool box Tim at Rx motors can do a rebuild for 1500 bucks. Drop it in then take for a set up a check over.
He\'s getting it checked over for me and il get it mapped myself. If the compression is there and the water system is tight then I won\'t take it for a build straight away as there won\'t be any need to. The car is worth 3k breaking all day. It\'s go a mega thick uprated radiator aswell as I found out yesterday when I went to look at it again. And it will come with a nice vented bonnet. So it only need me a map and the intercooler ducting in then it\'s good to go. Not sure how to duct it in though :-?
But the advice iv been given has been spot on and appreciated as I\'m going in with my head not my heart like I normally do.
That\'s fair enough. As you pointed out . If the worst happened you could break it and get 2500/3000 back so IMO it\'s worth £3000 all day long
As long as it\'s comp results are all over 6. Once your in the 5 bar range rebuild time is looming anyhow so push for 2500
