Title: UK Alloy wheel quality certification
Post by: Speedworks on January 28, 2014, 10:09:47 PM
Hello there,

I was talking to a UK alloy wheel manufacturer (Wolfrace) and more importantly if they could provide paperwork/ certification or anything like that (similar to German TUV/KBA/ABE or Japanese JWL) with regards to quality control, axle load etc.

So far they informed me to have none if all and stating in the UK you don\'t need it. Weird...

I could imagine the UK market is to small for a wheel fabricator and they would export to countries that do require some kind of certification/testing.

More importantly as Wolfrace\'s website states to be Rial and Alutec alloy wheel distributors for UK and those are German wheels (incl. certification).

Does anyone have any info on this subject,

thanks

I m sure CE approval covers this.

CE is just a paperwork exercise nowadays. You can self certify if you can prove due diligence. More likely its been tested to a BS standard, but again there should be certification available to anyone who asks for it.

Although certification only qualified by the sample that is tested. Something that is cast needs to be crack detected with 100 % inspection but you can\'t guarantee even this has been done with certification or CE.

I\'ve been involved in German TUV/KBA and ABE testing in my previous job, so I\'m very aware of what those tests involve (mainly a 2 million tremble test -> hair cracks, impact test and rolling test on a specialized machine)

So in short, wheels tested to those standards are quality approved. JWL is something similar for mainly Asia wheels but not as elaborate as TUV/KBA/ABE.

I find it hard to believe that, figuratively speaking, anyone could pour alloy wheels i his backjard and sell them.

I\'d be less worried about the UK businesses producing wheels because they are well established companies that have made wheels for a long time. Half of the reason I bought team dynamics wheels was their touring car history for wheels.
