Title: What\'s the difference between street and racing apex seals?
Post by: chrisBoid on August 03, 2004, 02:39:12 PM
With regards to 3mm replacement seals; what is the difference between racing and apex seals?

The material used?

//www.rx7.com has 3mm street seals (with springs) for $495 and racing seals (with springs) for $550, not that much of a difference.

Thanks.

Chris.

I looked at these a while ago but now think putting RX8 2mm tips in is even better, after all Mazda had more time and money for developement than anyone else in this game and the most criticism for reliability problems and still stuck with 2mm.

The RX8 tips were presumably built specifically for N/A apps though?

Basically, if its not tuned right and pings - its going to shit itself in all likeliness - whether it has ceramics or mazda steels, 2mils or 3mils etc. A hardier seal may take more abuse. But might also shield problems. And take out more when it finally goes. Stock seals may take less punishment but are cheaper to replace and dont tend to damage as much...

Swings and roundabouts

The 3mm\'s would need extra work on the rotors too (added expense).

Would RX-8 tips fit straight in?

RX8 apex seals do not fit into RX7 rotors.
Kind regards
