Title: Leak after rebuild
Post by: Palmeruk on October 22, 2013, 07:08:18 PM
Hi, ive rebuilt my FD 13b and moved to a single turbo, fired it up and let it run for 3-4 mins, it ran like ass as im using pfc with basemap, upon removing my downpipe it would seem my engine had taken a massive :censored::censored::censored::censored: out of the turbo, does anyone know what the cause may be? I rebuild the engine by the book so am a bit confused

Secondhand turbo. Or new?   Poss knackered. Did you prime it?

What turbo are you using at a rough guess you\'ve no restriction in the oil feed line. However without more detail that\'s only a educated guess.

I did prime it before start yeah, is a second hand turbo and previous owner says it was 100% when he had it, do you think it could have failed in storage?

It is a T88, lines were already on turbo

Quite possible knackered, or as Kev said above. What oil feed restrictor did you fit?

Check if it has a restrictor. If not that could be your issue.

Would this restrictor be on the banjo/engine side? I did use standard banjo bolt so would make sense

Either end.  Mine is where the feed goes on the turbo.

That\'s open too debate. Hence they don\'t last without one :)

Hey Keith, I have two t88\'s out there that have done loads of miles and been running for over 5 years running bridge ports and making some decent power that aren\'t running restrictors, they are a plain bearing turbo.
Its only ball bearing turbos that need restrictors.
There is something else wrong in this case. it could even be a poor draining issue.

I would have a thorough investigate first.

I don\'t dispute that Carl, and like you say oil return can cause the issue.  Garret themselves say that it\'s not generally needed, but may be needed depending on oil pressure. .  As rotary engines have 100psi plus oil pressure they can blow oil past without a restrictor.  Like I said open to debate.

its the same diameter as the return feed, no down sizing etc, have rebuilt the turbo and its still weeing out, not quite sure where to go from here

mite be worth sending it off, does anyone have any recommendations on company\'s?

May sound silly but have you made sure your breather pipes are not blocked (the ones off your oil filler neck ?
