Well i finally plucked up the courage to dedicate a morning to calling these insurance chaps, and it\'s not so good! In fact, i\'ve come to the conclusion that it\'s simply impossible to insure one now, seems i\'ll have to wait until i\'m 25!
Anyway, i tried a total of 7 different companies, including Adrian Flux, Admiral, Direct Line, Hyperformance, Performance Direct, Liverpool Victoria and Coversure.
Best deal i got was £3788 with Adrian Flux, but i would have to have been driving for a year (hence the problems).
To be honest, i was pretty much expecting this, although i know that there are younger drivers than me insured on FDs, most have been driving for 5 years +.
I was told by 3-4 companies they wouldn\'t touch anyone under 25, another said 30 (!), 1 (think it was tescos) said i needed to know the number plate, and the best conversation was with a lady who was trying to tell me the FD is a 2.4 hatchback. :D
I was politely trying to explain why, even though it was a 1.3, it usually is rated as \'equivalent\' to a 2.6 (and how does that work exactly?) and asked the lady to explain back why she had a figure of 2.4, and claimed the most beautiful coupe in the world is a hatch!! Needless to say, the answer was to the effect of \'I don\'t think we will be able to help you\'.
So, plan now is to keep shed-driving for a few months, maybe wait 6 or so before ordering an FD from Miguel, and by that time i\'ll be 25, 1 years no claims etc...will still be a lot, but should at least be workable.
Gutted to say the least, but on the bright side the budget i have set aside for a peach of an FD now may get me something even nicer if i wait awhile. Always a bright side.
Have you got another car? if you get one that is 10 years old then you can insure it as a 2nd car classic with limited miles, i\'m 23 and was paying £800.
& classic car insurance dont use yer NCB

so you can still use that on shed or wotever....
Si
Yeah, i do have a shed just now, and was planning on keeping it as driving the FD to work and back etc would be a waste and i\'d be so paranoid leaving it everywhere!
Was thinking between 4 and 6k miles per year would be about right.
I heard that you needed to be 25 though, with the car garaged? Is that right? If not, who should i be calling? I was thinking getting another 6 mths on the road might be a sensible option anyway...but the thought of affordable FD insurance might be too much to resist!
Thanks for the advice chaps! ;)
try Aon.
There\'s a number and contact name in the members section and having dealt with the guy I can honestly say that if it can be done - he\'ll sort you out.
They came in over £500 better than the cheapest other quote I could find and I must\'ve called about 20 or so companies.
Also, he\'s the only person in car insurance I\'ve ever spoken to who actually tried to help me by asking questions to come up with the options.
G
AON do require arage & 25+ i believe not sure if that\'s the case with all classic policies if you had a 10year old+ car?
Si
Cheers G. Sounds good, most of the time you feel like these people are thinking they\'re doing you a favour by taking your money! Sounds like a breath of fresh air to hear of a company trying to help you get set up!
I know i\'m asking a lot as i\'ve only been driving for such a short period of time, and i realised it would cost an arm and a leg...we\'ll see. Thanks for the help though, might give \'em a bell when i finish work tonight, if they\'re still open!
think you need to catch them daytime bud.
If it helps I use the car every day, 3yrs no claims, 28 yrs old, but no track record with a performance car.
Do about 10k miles p.a. in a \'96 RX
I\'m on their Classic Collectors Everyday Car Policy.
First I heard of the: car must be 10 yrs old thing, was on this forum. Aon just said this was the best one for me.
Only criticism I would make is that in event of a write off, I\'d have to whip out any goodies I had in the car sharpish, as I don;t get to take ownership in the event of write off. S\'pose I could come to a deal with whoever they pass it on to tho.
Good luck bud.
Hope you can sort it out. just remember you\'ll see bigger falls in premium each year than the rest of us!!! :)

I had the same problem due to a misfortune & only ending up with a yrs no claims, I went for a traders policy which worked out about £2800, but I\'ve got 7 cars at the mo so it made more sense for me
Well after much deliberating, i\'ve decided to put the FD plans on hold for a few months. Think it probably makes sense, i really should get more driving under my belt before getting something like that.
Also, i guess the budget i have set aside for a car and insurance will go further next year as the car\'s should be slightly less (i hope) and the insurance should be much more manageable! Pretty gutting as i\'ve been looking forward to one for so long, and after meeting you guys was totally convinced it was the right thing to do.
But, although i would pay £4k for insurance as i know i\'d enjoy every single second of having the car of my dreams, it probably makes more sense to hold off until i am more experienced. Maybe a little naive to think i would be able to drive a light and powerful RWD turbo\'d car fine from the get-go, especially as i\'ve heard many stories of drivers far more experienced than me having problems.
I\'m planning to try and learn as much as i can about the cars, their engines and so on, as well as taking lots of time driving RWD cars etc before then, think i might just set some kind of record for biggest number of posts on a car forum without actually owning the said car!! :p
Who knows, in a years time i might be able to pick up a medium-milage Spirit R for £20k or so! :D
Once again though, thanks to everyone for their help and advice! Sure it\'ll still be a bit of a mare even when i AM 25, but at least i\'ve picked up some excellent pointers!
Cheers
Sorry to hear you\'ve decided to hold off, but I admire your patience and willpower!
Hope you\'ll stay on the boards as your knowledge and recognition of the variants and kits is notable and your comments are of interest to me at least.
Keep your eye on import & SVA rules bud. I would hate for something to change and scupper your plans. At least if you\'re on the lookout for such things, if legislation looks like it\'ll change for the worseyou could always buy, import, SVA and store/work on her till you\'re ready to drive the motor.
Hey thanks, that\'s kinda nice to hear! To be honest i think it\'s just that i have too much time on my hands at work! I\'ll definitely stick around, the only reason i know anything at all is because i\'ve picked things up from the people here, just a learning experience for me now, hope to pick up lots more info in the next few months, especially with regards the engine etc, as i can imagine me having to do a lot of work personally!
Very good point about the SVA etc, i\'ll have to keep checking about. As you say, it\'s something that would have to be announced long before implementation, so i could make a purchase, and keep it until it became reasonable to insure. Or else buy one already here that complies with the rules®ulations etc.
Out of interest, i just had a quick look at elephant for a UK supra (next best car imho to the FD), it came out as £1600 fully comp, £250 excess. That was for the fully specced UK model (325bhp VVTi jobbie) with 0 NCD! Couldn\'t believe it, considering the prices and stipulations about RX insurance! Still, it\'s just made me want one more!
Anyway, now it seems i\'m faced with the decision of plan
a) Driving sheds for the next year or so, or
b) getting a supra, then selling up for FD next year. Only thing is they are expensive to buy, and would cost a lot money to run for the year, meaning the budget for rex would be depleted...but a whole lot of fun and a great intro for me. Hmmmmmmm.
you gettin quotes on import or UK FD?
the word import seems to scare a lot of em.
Aon are worth a shot on limited mileage if the 25 thing ain\'t a problem for them. You could get a shed and keep a low mileage policy on the rex for weekends.
Have you tried Elephant.co.uk for FD insurance?
I\'m 23 with zero NCB but driving 5 years, car is 94\' (UK model) with the value set at £7500 and only weekend use (mileage = 4.5k a year).
My premium is £1325 fully comp, I originaly got the quote from the website and then rang up to confirm it, the guy I spoke to on the phone was brilliant and was actually giving me pointers as how to get the quote even lower.
that reminds me.
elephant are bloody handy for redoing your quote repeatedly. Depending on what you do for a living you may have a number of possibly occupations to choose from and these do make a difference to the premium.
I must\'ve done about 10 quotes on Elephant only changing this and then using that occupation when calling round the others for quotes!:cool
That\'s an excellent point! I was looking specifically at jap cars, but i just popped onto elephant (cheers Brad!!!) to try my luck. Got some VERY good quotes imho! Both were for a UK spec FD (all the other quotes were for imports) valued at £10000.
1st quote was for 12000 miles, social and commercial use, only car...£2997 fully comp.
2nd quote was for 6000 miles, social use only, used as a second car...£2297 fully comp!!
Puts an entirely different spin on things, not only is the price £££ less, it\'s actually possible now as opposed to a years time! Only problem would be finding a reasonable UK car, think only 124 were made, and they seem to be expensive considering the spec is lower than the jap cars. Seen 2 so far, both are much more expensive than the jap equivalent. First has 86k miles, but a rebuild that has only covered 1000, seems standard mechanically, but he wants £11k for it?
The second one is cheaper, but hasn\'t been rebuilt...£9k+ for an FD with 60k miles?
Seems i could have a search on my hands, and i\'m going to have to look into standard equipment etc on the UK cars, don\'t know anything about them except they\'re 237bhp! :cool
& to further seduce you

finding a manual UK supra would probably be even harder to find....
Si
I reckon you could beat a UK seller down on the price
show them what kind of mods + warranty you could get from Brian/Miguel for the same asking price.
gotta be worth a try.
so we might see you in an FD yet :cool
Apparently so! I\'m a bit more scared as it means i\'m going to have to probably vet the car myself...was looking to forward to getting a healthy car already given the once-over by Miguel/Brian etc.
Noticed that a 6-speed UK supra is indeed a very rare animal. A friend called last night and was trying to tell me if an FD is what i really want, i should buy a supra. I asked if he had benged his head recently, but he replied by getting pretty philosophical. Says that some dreams are best left as dreams, and that the reality of owning an FD might not be all i\'m expecting it to be.
I seriously doubt it, but it\'s a fair point. But that\'s part of the reason i want one...i know it\'s going to require more care than virtually any car i can think of, and require a lot of tlc...but that is all a part of the appeal!
One thing\'s for sure, it\'s certainly looking much more promising now :D I might call elephant if i can get a break today and ask what the difference would be for an import FD. Oh, while we\'re at it, guess how much i was quoted for an integra type-r (older shape) on a 12000 mile policy? £3k!!!
find out from the insurer if it would make any difference if a friendly Mazda dealer imported it.
Would it then be treated like a UK car?
Clutching at straws perhaps, but you never know and every options is worth exploring.
How about this? Called elephant to see how much extra they\'d want for an imported FD as opposed to the UK variant. Bloke was fantastic, actively looking for ways to lower the premium, even listened attentively when i was explaining about the rotary engine/displacement etc!
Anyway, the upshot of all this is i got a quote for the same policy as before (6000 miles, social use only, fully comp) for £2180.
Yep, CHEAPER than a UK car!! Made sure he had the right one, originally he found a cheaper deal but it was for an FC, only thing that worried me a bit was on the copy of the quote i have it states Mazda RX-7 Turbo Coupe (Import), whereas the UK car was down as a TT i think? Still, guess maybe it\'s just how it comes, my Mum\'s MR2 is designated a 4-seater hatchback?!
So, needless to say, i am very very happy. Just need to wait until this pesky sale goes through (think i might consider training to be a solicitor, dread to think how much their services will cost me when all is said and done! Prob about the same as a re-build! :D ) before i can send Miguel a lil wish list.
Thanks to everyone for their help and concern, with any luck i\'ll see you soon! :wave
Live the dream!

Si
HeHe,
Glad to hear your getting closer mate :) I\'m saving for my single conversion now, it\'s a nightmare becuase I hate waiting!!
Bit of a thread hijack but how much do you guys reckon I should be looking at? I\'ve seen anything from 2k to 4k qouted so far  I\'ve got 2.5k at the minute am I nearly there? Any info appreciated.
Brad
Wot single are you thinking of?
Si (knows nowt but thought he\'d ask.....

)
A Greddy, my pal is importing bits and bobs from Japan and reckons he can get these units at a good price, what do you guys think a single unit and all the work would cost at a Rex specialist garage such as DRAGON or the other well respected garages in the UK.
Mods, feel free to move this as it\'s getting off topic.
Cheers,
Brad
Where in glasgow do you live mate? Is it high risk? I live 20 miles outside Cardiff and i\'m shortly 24 with 5 years NCB and i\'ve been quoted fully comp £549 on a 5k mile policy - I don\'t get why you are being quoted four times as much?
No matey, really low risk. There is a great topic here that can tell you your insurance risk code from your post code.
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5224
I\'m in Dunoon, Argyll...geographically close to Glasgow but actually separated by the Firth of Clyde. PA23 post code - catergory A, very good place as far as risk goes, apparently!
Reason i am being quoted so much is more to do with the fact i have 0 ncd and haven\'t yet been driving a year (really!). Consider myself very lucky to get a quote at all, all things considered! As it happens it might be that for a variety of reasons i might not be able to get rex for a bit anyway, but it should mean than if i wait awhile i\'ll be 25+, have some no claims and save myself a small fortune...meaning the budget for the car goes up! Spirit R B-Spec for me, baby! :rollin
