Title: Where can I get a new viscous coupling? Any sellers?
Post by: jakeyd07 on August 17, 2013, 04:12:06 PM
After removing and dismantling the fan/ viscous coupling, I see the little brass pin doesn\'t budge and the bimetallic strip makes no contact. Basically I need a new one as its completely done for. Does anyone know of any sellers or someone that\'s selling one cheap? Cheers jake:Thumbs-up

I think theres a car or two breaking on rx7fb.com forum, otherwise you thought of an electric fan conversion?  Cheap, reliable and releases a bit extra power.

What he said.

A couple of other chaps and I managed an electric fan conversion on an FB in an afternoon.  A Mk II Toyota MR2 fan or two fits nicely, they\'re about £20 or so from a breakers, and you can get thermostatic fan controllers for similar money.  Releases a little power and it means you can enjoy that 12A engine noise without hearing the incessant roar of the viscous fan.

Cheers for the replies guys, appreciate it! Where would I even start with converting it? How do you fit it without disrupting the belt system, I.e. alternator/ water pump pulleys etc. could anyone show me a picture, that would help alot! Thanks again, jake.

There\'s a bit about it on page 8 of this thread from when I did it. (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69685&page=8)

Basically we literally put the MR2 fan where the Viscous fan was and wired up a controller for it, we left the belts alone (the fan is driven from the same shaft as the water pump).  We had to get a bit creative with the brackets to clear the water pump but we managed it in an afternoon and it seemed to do the trick.  We let the engine get warm and adjusted the control thermostat to bring the fan in and then let it run until it turned off again so it had a decent cooling effect.

You can try pming casey for any photos of it but he is busy at the moment so you may have to be patient waiting for his reply.

well worth upgrading i will be surprised if you will find a second hand fan without the same fault, volvo fans fit good ;)
you will get better MPG and throttle response and honestly you will notice it
