Title: Car failed its MOT ... ( and now passed )
Post by: grinder on August 08, 2013, 05:35:09 PM
Looks like I wont be making rotorstock this year AGAIN ... bloody car failed its MOT on welding

I had all the underside welded up earlier this year and spent a while sorting the front brakes ( discs / pads / calipers )

And it goes and fails on welding on the rear end ( not sure what its called , but if you look at the drivers side rear wheel straight on, its the bottom right car corner where the door meets )

And its both sides :(

Really not impressed ... and I have tried to speak to the chap who welded it this year and both his phones go to voicemail

Not sure what my plan is now .. esp when rotorstock is only about 10 days away

it also failed on the Rear fog light .. switch doesn\'t do anything , nothing on the dash to say its on or off , nor does the light work

No idea if that\'s a fuse or not, as if the Haynes manual for it is designed for USA and I don\'t think they had rear fogs :(

Fog lights are a easy fix Stu worst case just get a Illuminated switch, take a feed from the side lights and run the switched live straight to the bulb holder if needs be. There is no requirement for a specific fog lamp warning lamp just a tell tale warning lamp.

I think I have figured a cheat for the fog lights , so not bothered about them now :)

I have it jacked up at the rear at the mo with the wheels off

Its looking pretty nasty round the entire rear end and arches to be honest

So the plan is to get it welded ( well price dependant ) and then fully stone chip both rear arches in white ( and it should make it nice and neat aswell )

Might do the front arches aswell

I was hoping the welding I had done early this year would have been enough , but clearly not

Its a UK car , so its to be expected to be honest

Its just annoyed me more than anything .. I was expecting it to fail on brakes .. not more sodding welding

BUT .. if I get this done , I don\'t think there is much more than can rust ??

I will get some pics taken tomorrow morning and get them posted up tomorrow night

I have made the holes slightly larger by attacking them with a wire brush ! LOL

Ha ha! Im in the same boat! My MOT is due on Saturday. I got the car jacked up a couple of weeks ago now to sort it out for RS only to find I need to weld the passenger side front floor and both rears where yours has gone. Guess its a UK car thing mate at the age of them. Not sure if mine will be ready for RS or not. Either way I could pick you up on the way down if you need a lift as I\'ll be going with or without the FC.

Oh, and I haven\'t even started the other work I wanted to do to it. I\'ve got tomorrow and next friday off though so fingers crossed.

What other work did you have planned for yours mate ?

The plan in my head is to get it looked at Monday , welded Tuesday and then MOT\'d Wednesday

I spoke to the MOT guy and he said that if I bring it back within 10 working days it wont cost anything , so im hoping he will just have a quick look at it and issue the MOT

Then it needs Taxing and I should be ready to roll :D

Hey stu

Whens the welder coming to have a look? Hopfully its a simple job for him

At least its just one point it failed on, and the weldings normally a one off repair to each section. Im dreading my s3\'s first mot :o

well yeah I suppose it is one point , just both bloody sides

Its just annoying when it had £200 worth of welding at the start of the year

Its become a large(ish) pit of money at the mo :(

It\'s not too big a job Stu on initial inspection and easy to get access to.

Yeah old cars suck for bleeding you dry. At least its nicer, more interesting and different to a modern german silver generic piston powered  car :p

Oh and pop up headlights too :) its gotta be worth the money for all that ? :)

well tis all true

I just hope the welding doesn\'t effect the paint on the outside of the car

Its gonna be a squeeze for RS10 at this rate

Wet sponge with cold water held against it by yourself Stu whilst he welds. Don\'t forget to keep refreshing the water in the sponge, that should sort you. Looking at what you\'ve got he\'ll be feathering the trigger anyway rather than a continuous run, so less heat build up anyway.

I don\'t think that will help as I will be at work when hes welding :( :(

Stu that doesn\'t look too bad from what I can see. It should be easy enough to repair by someone experienced with welding.

OK the welder chap came on Tues and put some plates on , got home and started to seam seal them , the drivers side was superb , the passenger side , I ended up blowing a hole in the car ( using a compressed air blower - as I was drying the plates ! )

At this point I had seam sealed the plate on the drivers side and painted all the rust with hammerite , and I did some hammeriting on the passenger side

He came back this morning and put another plate on

Got some white stone chip today so I could spray it up

Got home and made a start ( and finished ) .. car is booked in for the re-test tomorrow .. so fingers crossed eh !!!!!!!!

Shaun , yeah its going back to Tricky

Not overly impressed with the stone chip , its really thin stuff .. it might dry better though

I might buy another 2-3 cans and use one can on each arch and then spray up the underside of the fuel tank and spare wheel well

Gonna get it thru the MOT and RS10 and then maybe do it
