Hello Leon,

Welcome to MRC.  Which RX-7 model are you looking at buying?

I have checked whether there is a Dartford pub meet next Tuesday which is held at the Wharf pub over at Crossways.  If it is on, it might be good to come along and have a chat with the guys.

Hi, good car history :)

Yup, the 3rd gen RX-7, also known by the chassis code FD3S or just FD, ran from 1991 to 2002.  (I have a \'96 and love it).

All FDs basically have the same performance; the \'96 (Series 7) and \'99 (Series 8) cars have a few minor performance, reliability and cosmetic improvements, but are rarer and pricier, especially the 99s.  (Almost) anything with an \'R\' in the name is a sports model with twin oil coolers and the stiffer suspension.  Extra power goes with the later series; bigger brakes are rare - RZ only before 96, RZ, RS & RSR models of Series 7 and 8.

All that said, I think it\'s best not to get too hung up about the model grade, as long as it\'s not an automatic ;)  but rather to focus on the condition of the car and how well it seems to have been cared for - and allow some money in the budget for maintenance and upgrades (certainly if you want to do trackdays).

If you know your budget and what you want to use the car for, people can probably suggest what to look for out of the wide range of FDs available.

Thanks for the info samoht im not looking to track the car i want it for road purposes cruises and to attend shows and meets. I would like it to be a clean tidy well maintained example and by the sounds of things one thats seen an engine rebuild or low mileage. Have seen a few i like the look of ive found a 1992 fd with a recent rebuild by jimmys for £4.700 then theres others running from 1993 to 1996 but varying from the 4k mark upto 8995k so still baffled

I think if the engine has highish mileage, try to get a compression test and if results are good (7ish and even), that\'s probably as good or better than a recent rebuild.  If fuel/air/ignition etc are set right then it should take 50-100k fine.

I\'d probably look for a mechanically near-standard car that\'s been well maintained, unless you want something with an impressive engine bay for shows.  I would have said you should find that for £5k, however I just took a peek on Pistonheads and there seem to be no good cheap FDs right now.

Pricing is generally all over the place, as many owners pour cash into their cars and then expect to get it back when they sell, which it\'s rare to be able to do.  Plus they\'re fairly rare and each one is different in terms of spec, so there aren\'t many benchmarks to judge fair market value by.

This one could be worth a look

thanks for the info yes it seems an un easy to task with no benchmark to work from for the reasons you mentioned. Im going to look at a standard one with a engine build done 4000k ago has had one owner from import and last owner has had it for 9 years so sounds like a geniuing sale so fingers crossed on that one. when clicking on the link it takes me to the vbulltien message??

Everything you describe sounds positive, I agree.

Re the link I posted, the thread title is "1995 FD 3S Efini Pearl Nemesis Blue for SALE", it\'s in the Cars For Sale section of this forum.  I understand forum guests can see this section (I certainly hope so, would make it hard to sell cars otherwise).  Anyway the one you mention sounds promising too.
