Title: Upgrade brakes for FD...how&why?
Post by: Speedworks on May 31, 2013, 07:02:58 PM
Hy there,

bringing up an old sore of mine. Over the years I have had different caliper sets (AP, Brembo etc), but as rare as the FD is in our regions, little is plug and play (except for Japan/US import items).

As the calipers currently in my posession are top notch, I want some discs to match.

With the upcoming trend of OE car makers to have high end brakes (drilled/slotted/etc) I was wondering if there is something out there that can be used on the FD (given a redrilled bolt pattern).

Merc/Audi/BMW (others?) must have interesting parts we can use.

Any body that has tested or tried one of these?

Please share!!!

thx

One thing that has surprised me is that I have yet to see RX-8 discs on an FD, this would give 323mm fronts and 303 rears.

Stud pattern is the same, yes the bell offset is different but no matter what calliper is used a new calliper to upright bracket would need to be fabricated anyway.

As for the rear its possible you could use the whole RX-8  calliper assembly and get it to bolt straight onto the rear hub.

With so many discs available for the RX-8 at good prices this has got to be worth a look

hope this helps

Yes it was Antnicuk. I bought his FC years ago. M5 front discs, fd calipers (afaicr), abs removed, awesome stopping power.

Sorry to thread jack, but I have also been thinking about this recently. I have the AP Racing 6 pot front kit and was wondering if this could also be used for the rears? I can\'t find an AP rear kit any where, however I was hoping to put APs on the rear for symmetry. Damn OCD...

You\'d lose the handbrake and you don\'t generally need as big a brake on the rear as on the front.

The rears can be a complete pain, the setup on Kermit II is the way to go with a seperate single piston for the hand brake.

I thought the RX8 rear discs where the same size as the FD ??? Now there are more Rx8 getting broken maybe a set could be bought cheaply.

Speak to Dave Thompson, (Sicknote on here)

He has just fitted brand new front and rear AP Racing brakes to his Kermit II project (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77636&highlight=Racing&page=20), (post # 491) so he could most likely help.

Cheers for the responses, the Kermit II looks awesome. That is the kind of setup that I am looking for.
