Title: Long distance Touring in a Rotary?
Post by: Daston on May 18, 2013, 12:58:56 PM
Hey guys,

both the wife and I will be 30 next year and I though a road trip was in order :)

She has always wanted to go to Italy and I thought it could be quite a trip to do it by car.

Here\'s the plan, euro tunnel to France, drive down to nice see Monaco etc for a couple of days then drive along the riviera to Florence stay there for a week and then drive back stopping at Milan before returning to France etc.

Its around 2500 - 3000 miles depending on routes and detours etc.

I will have hopefully found an RX7 by then so will be looking at taking that with us, I just wondered if anyone has taken their Rex on a long driving holiday and how they got on....I know about the fuel but how was it on oil etc

Cheers

Dave

I took mine to the Ring. It\'s stock and not too noisy. I found the seats are comfortable for a long trip. I took some oil in case the grade that rotaries need was hard to find.
There is not much space for bags. If you take the parcel shelf out to to make space, the reflections in the rear glass are irritating. Make sure the air con is OK.  And if the car stops, you will have to fix it. They know nothing

I haven\'t had a chance to do this in my FD yet, but I certainly will do something like this.

I drove to Italy in my 180SX, pretty much what you suggest, Nice, Pisa, Florence, Bologna, Modena for the Ferrari Museum, Venice, Verona, Como, and Milan, then back through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Chamonix.

I took the \'Route Napoleon\' from Grenoble to Nice (historic route through the Alps, quite widely used for magazine road tests).

I highly recommend you do this, I had a great time in the 180 and an FD would be better again.  Italy is a great country, I prefer to avoid the super-touristy places but apart from those it\'s lovely, lots to see in quite a close area so you don\'t spend too much time on the road.

So far my FD doesn\'t seem to use much oil on motorways, it\'s more when I really cane it on country roads.  Take a couple of litres in the boot and you should be fine.
