Title: Rebuild Cost
Post by: rxangus on July 27, 2004, 01:08:26 PM
Hi all,

Does anyone know the total price of a 3rd gen rebuild at WGT assuming Pip can reuse the rotor housings?

I\'m not considering porting or anything exotic. Just a plain rebuild.

Angus (now with secondary boost - wooooooooooo!!!)

PS No it doesn\'t need it yet (fingers crossed)

If its going to go to Pip, would it not be fairer and easier to phone wgt.
But Im sure he could only give ball park, until the engine is stripped who knows what needs replacing.

Hmmm I just thought someone on here might have had that done and therefore would be able to tell me.

Didn\'t realise there might not be a firm cost....

Ah well I\'ll worry about it when I need to

Getting mine done off Pip now but as Gary says it up to him to give you a price.

Generally i would try and keep £3000 for a basic rebuild fund. No matter who you decide to rebuild for you.

You will never know if it needs housings until it is taken apart for inspection....

Angus, when I saw the title I thought oh no, not a rebuilt already!

My motor was done by RX:Motors and the cost was approx £2200
this was with a couple of new parts etc. Approx £2k would be about the lowest cost.

Its just soo difficult to give a price and sometimes not upset the customer when it gets quoted higher, it could need 1 or 2 new rotors, 1 or 2 rotor housings, plus all the nes rebuild parts req. Is it to be ported worth doing while its out. Very unlikely but new shaft?
If you budget for between 3-4k you should not be dissapointed.

Between £2.5K and £6K I\'d say - depending what you replace with new and how trick you want. Most people use new rotor housings whatever so that bumps it up over a \'basic\' rebuild (i.e. just getting it back on the road reusing as much as poss). Side housings are gonna be £250-350 each so if you have a bad 2 rotor failure and they\'re all wasted theres a grand there pretty much. Add two rotors if they have chucks of apex seal embedded in them - second hand probably £500 the pair, new probably twice that. New apex seals - any thing from £150 for mazda steels to however much exotic stuff like Ianettis go for these days. Porting and dowelling - another grand :) Labour to remove/strip/rebuild/refit another grand. Lots of other stuff too, all adds up.

I would say Gary is about right on average - between £3-4K to be safe. This would be all new seals, rotor housings etc.

I had mine \'done\' by Pip late last December.

Initial quote was ~£3k, final bill was £4800.  Sounds really bad but Pip did talk to me about the state of the engine once it was out and what it was going to cost.  I needed a hell of a lot of work as mine was in a really bad way (£800 for new housings for example).  Also has porting done, full hose replacement, re-cored rad, engine mounts fixed, some work on the diff as it was leaking...

If it\'s a simple rebuild with decent re-use then £2.5k is reasonable, could be much more as it was in my case.

Thanks everyone for your info.

I\'m considering getting a rebuild done before I have any kind of major problem. Sort of "preventative maintenance". Car has done 40K so far. Pip told me that I could save a grand by reusing the original rotor housings but I didn\'t ask him what the remaining cost would be!!

I can see from the replies that there is no hard and fast answer!!

Cheers

Angus (off to start saving!)

40k on a stock engine really is not much at all, John Yorke had his rebuilt at 80k and was still in good condition, very well looked after. So you should have plenty of time for saving, unless you know that some something is amiss.

I am able to offer a full engine rebuild using all mazda parts for £2050.00 New housings are extra.
I can do this over a weekend with the car being dropped off on the friday evening and driving away on the Sunday.

Definately a more cost effective way to rebuild your car before it pops to save turbo\'s housings and rotors.

life expectancy of a stock engine (3 piece tips) 45 to 55k

Not much difference with rebuilding a GTiR though, and I bet you know people whove done that.

I bought a used then rebuilt core from Pip for £3600 as my originial core had been totally overheated by the previous owner so all housings where scrap.

Having rebuilt my TII engine when a tip broke, I did it  myself for around £650, I would personally think you could do this for a lot less than £3k if nothing is broken yet. All you really need is a seal kit and new tips. I would very much doubt that housings needed replacing at 40k and should last AT LEAST double that if nothing like a broken tip damages them. If you do want to replace the side housings which take the most wear, RX Motors supply these at around £250 each for new ones, but I wouldn\'t bother.  Side housings, being cast iron wear much less but a visual inspection will reveal all.

Overall you are doing the right thing to get it done before it breaks, which will save potentially at least a grand.

PS I did find that API engines do rebuilt FD short engines for £1495 plus vat (but I had no exchange) has anyone tried them??
