Title: FD Diff Housing with pinion and crown gear
Post by: Prof on May 09, 2013, 07:54:27 AM
I have an FD diff casing, with all the goodies except the Torsen and bearings - it\'s too heavy to post, so anyone who wants a spare case or has another diffential gear lump that needs a home, I can let you have this for a song (£20)

Do you know the ratio?
If its a 3.9 or 4.1?

Is there an easy way to tell Carl ?

If it\'s any help, it was Aceman\'s old Diff before he Steve replaced it on the major upgrade.

Count up the teeth on each gear and divide the bigger number by the smaller

Yes, that\'s one way - but I wondered if the crown gear had some number or mark stamped on it - I\'ve put the back cover back on the diff, so without taking it off to count teeth on the pinion, I just wondered if it was marked anywhere.

Hi dave

How\'s life treating you?
Its stamped on the crown wheel, the prop flange is different as well but that could have been changed.

suppose  you could turn the prop side  (FLANGE) and count the number of rotations for one  full wheel turn cycle.  3.9 turns or 4.1 full turns per full wheel cycle indicates the type of diff...think ive got that the right way round...

Not too bad thanks Phil :-)  See - I knew someone would be along with an easy answer :)

I could, but since I\'ve taken the Torsen out, and it doesn\'t have drive shafts with it, and I\'ve unbolted the crown from the Torsen, that options is out.  Also, the diff housing has the back plate bolted back on, which means I can\'t easily count the pinion gear teeth.

Off to the garage to look for stamped numbers...

Ok, crown / ring gear is stamped P061, so it\'s a 4.10 diff  ratio from a 93-95 car.

Just to remind everyone, it\'s the diff case, pinion gear and ring gear that I\'m selling, as I\'ll just be swapping the differential itself into the FC diff.  So the diff being offered is INCOMPLETE, you\'ll need to provide the Torsen or other diff unit to bolt back onto the crown / ring gear...

the one coming out of your fc, is it a turbo 2 plated diff?

I think it will be either an open diff or a warn out viscous LSD, really not too sure as the rear wheels sometimes behaved a little odd when rotated with the car up on axle stands.
