Title: My Wheel Hop Mods And Lack Of Success
Post by: roborangefd3s on May 04, 2013, 02:41:04 PM
Hi, - so I am trying to get ride of wheel hop, it ruins the car.

I have swapped the diff bushes for delrin, I have fitted a dragon diff brace - I have also put 315 wide michelin pilot sports on, they are huge.

But my car still wheel hops, why? - do I need to do all the suspension arm bushes or something?

What is next on the list of anti wheel hop mods please?

Thanks

The suspension struts, shocks in particular.
Diff brace does nothing as diff is not floating.

Also how are you getting this when you are still running in?

thanks Carl, it finished running in ages ago - we spoke about mapping remember?

so I need to get new coilovers then to stop the hop?

A KG parts diff brace is a much better option. It stopped my wheel hop. Also worth changing all the rest of the bushes

Same as Above really but mine was a copy !

Had the dragon brace and it didn\'t work anywhere near as well, it helped but not enough.

If you go down to Carl\'s he can show a brace that will stop the diff moving completely. If he has the orange drag car there. It requires some custom work and welding but it will fix the problem for sure

What stopped mine was partly shocks but mainly rear upper wishbone bushes . Sent to poly and made a massive difference , I found it more wheel end than diff .

i modded my old fd and never suffered wheel hop at all.mods were as follows

poly diff bushes
ohlins coilovers with around 400 and 450 springs
poly bushed whole suspension
rubber mounted gearbox brace
racing beat arb\'s

i think wheel hop can be made worse by suspension being to stiff on the rear without enough control from the shocks it causes the spring to not be controlled correctly and literally do its own thing. this will have the most impact on your wheels ability to keep on the road. then any worn bushes will cause movement and cause what feels like slack in the whole transmission.

these are just my observations for the fd after many different setups. and no i did not use a diff brace at all and ran 450-500bhp with the car.

Sorry if silly question, can poor wheel alignment cause wheel hop as well?

possibly yes, the thing is I dont want to pay for alignment and then find out it still hops bcos of bushes or trailing arms or whatever.

Ultimately your dampers will control your wheel oscillations and as you sound like you\'re running wide 18\'s or something with heavy tyres your so maybe your unsprung mass is a lot higher now. So damper may not be able to control that extra mass.

Maybe some decent monotube dampers valved for a higher wheel mass is needed.

I\'ve always run fairly soft springs on my V8 conversion with lots of torque and it\'s always suffered some wheel hop. I\'ve done the usual poly bushes, new spherical bearings and replaced the diff bushes and that all reduced the hop. My damper are nothing special so I could benefit from an upgrade myself.

Wider tyres will make the car wheel hop worse as you have more grip.

Wheel hop happens when the diff gets to rotate forwards as the tyres grip. You need to stop this happening.

This is the reason cars with solid rear axles use "traction bars, 2links, or 4 link " setups. To stop the axle rotating and causing the wheels/axle skipping or return back to its normal position

so basically i need to change half the back of my car to get it to move off the line at the same speed as my daily ? lol

I do like the shape of the FD though and the noise, just not sure I want to spend my life in the garage.

Your car is close to 20years old. Depending on what year you have. So you have to expect to do some work on the damn thing. The bushes will be shot to :censored::censored::censored::censored: if they have never been changed.

Don\'t take this the wrong way but if your not prepared to work on your car, or pay someone else to do it, then perhaps its not for you? Maybe buy a brand new car that doesn\'t require any work is for you

Considering you have no idea about the amount of work he has done to his car, why make a statement like this? For all you know he spends every evening and weekend working on his car. Not exactly a helpful post was it? In the words of Thumper from Disney\'s Bambi "If you don\'t have anything nice to say, then don\'t say nuthin at all....."

If he spends every weekend and evening and every penny on his car then he wouldn\'t mind fixing it then would he?

If you read his last sentence it sort of indicates that he\'s not interested in working on his car, he wants answers to help him with a problem but doesn\'t seem to want to put in the work?? These cars are old, it\'s as simple as that, and they require time and money. FD stands for Financial Deficit.

I have had the whole rear end out of an FD, changed all the bushes, welded it, and painted it and put it all back in. It\'s not that hard,  you can have it out in a day, get the bushes pressed in by someone with a press, and put it back in, in a day.

The whole sub frame drops out as one big unit

This seems like a good explanation:
http://www.mc2racing.com/tech/20061012a/
- basically, your suspension bushings need replacing.

So no, you don\'t need to put a solid rear axle in or anything.

You just need to renew the suspension bushings.  As far as I know, all cars with proper rear suspension suffer from the bushings wearing out over time, it\'s not unique to the FD.

Cool story bro.

And saying something like removing a rear sub-frame is "not that hard" is completely ridiculous, maybe not to you, me or some of the other mechanically experienced people on here but don\'t assume that everyone would find it a doddle. Anyway i\'m not here to get in an argument, just felt your comments were unfair, but hey maybe its just me.

You may just have a rear lower trailing arm bush worn ( not sure of the exact name but lower arm in the middle with 3 mounting points)I believe its the common 1 to go first.... If you drive slowly forward...then selected reverse can you here a clunk from the rear? I had a similar issue i could not find worn bush with a lever bar but when it was off obvious.

I know that its run in Rob having had umpteen conversations about it and all the other little jobs you keep asking me to quote for but none as yet carried out due to waiting on you.
What I am saying is since it has not been mapped (AFIK) wheel hop shouldn\'t be happening as the car should not be driven that hard yet until its mapped. Besides you should still be on a rev limiter of 4k too.

Have you had it mapped?

called you twice in April re mapping, you said you couldn\'t fit it in due to other commitments and that you would do it in early May. I am currently trying to get it mapped yes but it is still on the limiter.

it was wheel hopping at 3000 rpm due to maxxis drift tyres being such hard compound and the previous owner fitted very small 235 width on the rear - with the larger tyres recently fitted it no longer hops at 3000rpm but I know it will hop once again once the limiter is off and the car is mapped because the hopping is caused by other factors beside the tyres e.g alignment/bushes etc - have ordered bushes and launch kit.
just trying to sort such problems while waiting for a date for mapping.

Might be an idea to go to a specialist to get the car fixed. Instead of just throwing money at new parts and hoping it fixes the problem.

or even at least get it diagnosed by a specialist and going to fix it yourself if your not want to get hit by labor charges.

Surely suspension or rx specialist could take one look at it and know the problem..

Quote from: roborangefd3s;857246v8 conversion?

To add to my post and one of the replies that mentions diff rotation. Part of my V8 engine conversion removes the PPF frame and replaces it with a diff brace. Now I know Tinker will agree it\'s not the best solution (made by a US company) and he does things a little different. However it almost completely stops the nose of the diff rotating. So yes I do get some hop but it\'s now only on vary hard launches.

The last occasion was on a disused airfield using skinny (I didn\'t have any 17\'s at the time to fit wider rubber on) Maxsport remoulded semi-slicks with their softest compound.

There was some hop (actually worse on the left side on the track) but I was able to launch very hard and keep up with some very powerful 4WD cars on the day.

Only vid I have of my starts on the day below. Mine at 28 secs for about 10 secs :(
