Title: Hello from a new 1st gen owner
Post by: richrx on April 30, 2013, 10:00:27 AM
A big hello to everyone!!!

So I thought it time I introduced myself in the 1st gen forum since im just back from london after buying Keith\'s 1985 series 3 :)

My names Richard and im a rex-a-holic, though not as bad as some of the more regulars on here I would imagine :)

So far ive owned a 3rd gen,  2nd gen and now I\'ve completed the trilogy, I like to think possibly in the minority of owners having owned all 3 at some point ( sadly not all at the same time)

My 3rd gen was almost 10 years ago now!! I was young and bought with my heart, not my head and it nearly bankrupted me, as it also had waterseal failure :( ( sadly a member on here sold it as fully working, so a hard lesson learnt) I rebuilt it and tuned it, but it kept spitting the dummy, and on the 3rd rebuild it was sold!! I loved the car but couldnt afford to keep it! Time to move on :(

So 2008 comes along and so does the boredom of my bmw, it was all the car I needed, brilliant, but just another bmw and sooo bland and boring! So I started the hunt and my t2 cab came up. A flight to london and trip out to kent and I owned a great car. I kept the car for 3 great years, it became part of the family... so it was fitting when I proposed to my wife that the car was with us too :) but the car was a daily driver and I couldnt afford 14mpg and a wedding. Sadly the car went to a new home and happily to a new loving owner on this forum. This was the best car ive owned,  it was outdone in outright performance by the 3rd gen, but the retro looks, character and reliability all made it much better than a 3rd gen, Imho of course ;)

So 3 weeks ago 6/4/13 I got myself a wife, and off to Malaysia on honeymoon we went, clearly as rex-o-holic I kept searching to see what was out there and finally I saw my new 1st gen and its reduced price. Being 7 hours ahead I had a long wait untill it was 9am and a more acceptable time to call Keith. I was certain someone else would calk before be but luckily I was first and it was arranged,  after travelling 23 hours from Malaysia to london and back to Glasgow on Thursdays, we were going back to London for my rx7 obsession on sunday :)

My wife was almost as excited as me, infact at 5am as the alarm wentb off she was much more excited about the trip :)

So the rest is history,  Keith is a great guy, he loved the car since 1992, and was sad to see it go. But I think I\'ve shown him I was an enthusiast and he was happy to let the rex go.

So 400 miles north, the rx performed perfectly... hopfully I can keep it for the next 20 years in as good a condition as it is now :)

So thats my brief intro and hello :p hope I havent bored you all!!! Heres some photos, sorry the first gen photos arnt great, weve not had much time together yet...

Hi Rich

Glad to see that you posted on here and that you are a great Rotary enthusiast which I know Keith wanted the car to go to a good home and surely looks like it has. :Thumbs-up

Hope you have many years of enjoyment with it.  Maybe you can bring it along to Rotorstock on August 18th at Santa Pod

My names Clive and im a rex-a-holic, blimey I suspect there\'s a few more here who could say that :chat

Seriously, what a great line for re-introduction to Rotary ownership and as you can imagine I\'m really pleased to see this is a car that\'s not off to the abyss.

Hey stu,

Was going to email you and update you, especially after the last email :p but I didn\'t want to jynx my luck, I think by the time we were up at the lancs area we were on a mission to get all the way home. Thanks for the offer, might take you up next road trip :) but theres plenty of pics of your vert if your wanting any ;)

LIsa, im definitely one of the biggest enthusiasts of all rotaries,  my lack of money is my only limiting factor :p but I\'ll be keeping this car as clean and original as possible :) im not sure on rotorstock though, its along way and both my wifes and my birthday about that time. But never say never :)

Clive, I feel your pain :p its a a brilliant illness to have :) I will definitely keep the car out in the forum, updates and road trip stories where I can :)

You can tell im very excited about getting on with the 1st gen. ..

You got a real bargain there I reckon! Considering Keith was asking for £2,500 originally, then dropped it to £1,950 in February 2011 and turned down my offer of £1,500 around that time.

Really pleased to see it has found a home with a rotary enthusiast. I saw the car and spoke to Keith at Brooklands a couple of years back (after it failed to sell) - the car looked really well cared for.

Hi casey,

keith had said a few people had been out to see the car but I think at that time he really wasnt ready to let go of the car. It was probably the timing that meant i got my mits on it

yeah mines fine, the ecu has :censored::censored::censored::censored:ed up so replacement is on its way and then back to normal :)

fuel consumption is horrific though, luckily I barely drive it.

Hi

No im not selling mine, infact im taking it a trip north tonight to loch long to meet up with keith who I bought it from in april, hes up here on holiday and wanted to see the car. After he owned it 21 years I cant say no, amd im happy to show him the car again :)

Hopfully I\'ll get spending some time and money on it soon. But I want to keep it original as posible!

Lol with the 3rd gen economy,  I got 9-12 mpg out mine, and was using it daily :s since my fc gor 17 daily or 25 on a run. The 1st gets about 30mpg on a run. No idea for local driving but its not too bad, but hardly does any miles.

You selling the fd damz ? Not that I can afford one till I have a proper garage to store it in?

I was close to selling it as the turbo\'s were acting weird and kept going into limp mode. turned out the ecu was just bad as I put in a different one and it worked perfectly. so shall keep it for a while.  There are not many cars that would interest me at the moment, only really s2000 or some other 2 seater or 2+2 sports cars.

I walk to work so fuel consumption isn\'t a huge issue for me atm, need to get the bike back on the road, the battery is completely dead now.

was your fc a turbo one or just na?

Lol were you gonna flog a dodgy car? :p

The pic of the FC is at the tp of the page, its a turbo 2 convertible, loved it, grinder ( from this forum) has it just now, I sold it for my wedding, big mistake. Thankfully ive got first refusal if he ever sells it...

Haha yeah walking to work would help alot with fuel :) definitely keep the fd as long as possible there one of a kind and I doubt much will come close to its looks wise and performance wise in one package. I think alot of cars will dissapoint in comparison!

I just got a new bike this year, trying to move away from the sports bikes for my licence sake, got a bmw k1200r,  trying to make as much of it carbon/ matt black as I can :)

Hi folks

Just thought I\'d share last night\'s events with you.  I had a call from Keith earlier in the week,  keiths who I bought my 1st gen from, he told me he had a holiday booked to Scotland and wanted to meet up if possible.

So a last minute change of shift,  re-arranged holiday( well weekend break) later and a trip to the ardgarten hotel at loch long I met up with keith and stella to reunite them with the car they owned, loved and drove over france on family holidays for 21 years! He seemed very appreciative and we had a good chat over some coffee.

I think keith was particularly pleased to find out I polish the rex with autoglym,  as he has for the past 21 years!

Anyhow both my wife and I had a great time chatting,  and the setting was lovely :)

Just goes to show how much we all get attached to these old cars :)

Heres a couple of photos....
