Title: Testing fuel pump? Rebuild kits?
Post by: L18M on March 30, 2013, 06:18:35 PM
Hello good people,

Few questions about fuel pump, Bosch 044.

Is it possible to test it by taking it out and hooking it up to a car battery charger? or better to just connect to a car battery?

Also are rebuild kits available for it?
The pump is only about 2 years old and not covered many miles, maybe 500 if that.
It doesn\'t prime when turn the ignition on and the fuel press gauge doesn\'t move when ignition is on.

Any help muchly appreciated.

Yes you can hook it up to a battery, don\'t run it dry though. If its a dud just buy another as they\'re sealed units iirc

ok thanks Grant :)
so need a bath of fuel to test it? or can use water and let it dry before putting back in (if its not busted)

is using car batt charger ok? (not sure if i have any wires to hook up to battery lol)

Yes fuel. Do not use water. Stick a bit of pipe on either end so you can direct where you want other wise you might end up with petrol in your eye, and that hurts, a lot.

Can\'t see any problem with using the charger but I would use a battery. Be careful though because a spark near the fuel vapour will end up with woomf and your eyebrows amongst other thing disappearing.

You want to check its a Genuine Bosch Pump (made in czech republic as opposed to the fake German ones), seen loads of 044\'s and never had an issue even when the car has been stood for 4-5 years.

Also if you test make sure you have the Wires connected to the pump properly and a decent length of wire to the battery (no sparks), As already said you need to use Fuel (Petrol) and expect allot of Flow. A 044 with no Pressure reg and 14v will shift allot allot of juice, if you pipe it into a Big measuring Jug and time it then you will get a good idea if its ok or not :)

Sounds like a wiring fault with the car tbh.

As above, I would test it in the car rather than out as its pretty dangerous, just use a battery and some spade clips to jump it on the connector.

Sounds like a relay is playing up rather than the pump.

Dave: yes it\'s an 044

Grizzly: I brought from Clive so would of thought is genuine

Rxboy: I unplugged the main +I\'ve lead from the relay to the pump and attached to battery directly and still no noise from the pump.

Thanks for the tips, think will try again with pump in tank hard wired. Fingers crossed, fire extinguisher ready lol

Your going to need more than a fire extinguisher if it goes up. More like a blast suit.

Couldn\'d find a fire extinguisher and kind of valued my little hair left so decided to test in tank.
Took the plug off and turned ign on, there was an ohm reading running through the red wire and blue wire but nothing from the black or black with white stripe (assuming these are both grounds? they both thicker than the red and blue wire)

Not too sure what \'multi meter i have\' (just fund in draw), i set to 25 DCV and got an Ohm reading (cant remember what reading it was) so shows there is power going to pump.

Where do i go from here?
What is the red wire and blue wire?

Thanks
