Title: BMW MIni Cooper question
Post by: MintyFresh on July 24, 2004, 02:28:36 PM
My bro\'s got \'53 mini cooper and i think standard its 110bhp.  In his quest for power he has shortlisted a NOS kit, and the usual induction and exhaust.  He can get de-cats and a manifold for more money but your only talking minimal gains.

He\'s come across an electric supercharger that can add gains of 10-18bhp, which is a lot for a NA car.
From what ive seen and can make out, its like an electric fan that sits just before the induction cone and obviously works like a low power supercharger.

Do you think this will work?  I can see the logic behind it, and i guess the stock ecu will change fuel accordingly just wondering wot u tech guys think?

I sincerley doubt it will work. The only thing it will probably do is just clutter up the intake tract.
I beleive you can get a proper supercharger for the mini. It might be a vorthech kit or something, I honestly can\'t remember where I read about it.
My sister has just bought a mini aswell and she was talking about wringing more power out of it. But we don\'t know where to start....and I don\'t really think she should mod it.

most of the really cheap kits are complete nonsense, compressing enough air to supply even a small engine requires a huge amount of power.

I did see a website that was selling electric superchargersthat looked like they would work but they were running three starter motor sized electric motors with a seperate 24v electrical system to power them and some kind of power capacitor to help with the high current drawn during the (very breif) operation of the supercharger.  Oh and they were VERY expensive.

thats kinda what i was thinking, any fan thats powerful enough to compress air must draw a lot of power.

Title: The fan...
Post by: Schtoo on July 25, 2004, 05:05:27 PM
is a crock. A glorified computer cooling fan on a good day.

For the Mini to move a little better, don\'t forget it IS a BMW donk, and playing under her skirt will most likely be very painful and expensive.

Cheap and simple is to make it breathe and play with the computer. Be careful as it\'s really easy to go backwards (as many Honda clowns have found).

Better bet, stick a blower on the thing. IIRC that\'s what the Cooper S has over the regular Cooper. Aside from a different badge...

Now, if you could find a broken S and remove the nice bits, and stick them in the one you got, maybe that might be an option, no? ;)

until you have to tell the insurance company.   Better off spending the money on the insurance for the \'S\'

surely its not as easy as just getting the supercharger from a wrecked \'s\'?  Isnt the engine compression different as well as other things.

sports cat, decent free-flow exhaust (by which I dont mean twin 4" DTM upswept system  :D ), emerald ECU, ITG pannel filter...     ...speak to graham goode in Leicester, or minisport in padinham near leeds...     ...both do nice upgrade kits, or individual components if you want to do it bit by bit...

b :)

PS..  I think minisport have a 220bhp cooper-s conversion too :)

I think every one\'s missing the point; the new mini\'s are gay and a heritage rip-off we allowed those crooks at BMW to get away with :(

Want a \'Mini\' - buy a PROPER Mini!? :D

I agree with 20B_Boy Im afraid...   I was p!$$ed off when they called that 1-series BM a mini, but thats the way of big business and asset stripping...     ...I was also gutted that Cooper sold out to them also

I still have fun blowing the doors off new minis (regardless of state-of-tune) in my \'63 Cooper-S...     ...155bhp is more than enough for me :D
