Title: Wipers have stopped working
Post by: grinder on February 28, 2013, 11:37:16 AM
Hiya chaps

Was out in the cab over the weekend and the wipers seem to have stopped working completly :(

I have checked the 15a wiper fuse and it looks OK

Everything else works ( hazzards , roof , screen sprayers ) but just not the wipers

Thing is , they DID work , on all speeds aswell .. and now , nothing

Is there something simple i can check , or something obvious have missed

Im not even sure what i can check to see what voltage they are getting ( if any )

Unless there is a relay somewhere that i dont know about ??

Thanks

Stu

Pull the instrument surround off and remove the switch cluster.  It\'s quite likely one of the mini relays inside the unit has given up...

The relays are pence from farnell or RS IIRC :)

i thought the relay only sorted out the intermitten wipe and not EVERYTHING ??

i cant believe its gone from all to nothing :(

i have just been out and checked , and i seem to be getting 12v at the motor regardless of the wipers being on or off ( which i find more than strange)

i need to read the FSM on Monday at work to see if that identifies which of the 6 pins become "live" when the wipers are on , then i can put 12v to it from the battery to see if the motor is OK

I suppose it could be the relay .. maybe on of the pins im getting 0v to "should" be 12v to make the motor work ??

I need more info really , i dont want to make it worse ! LOL

Humm done some more digging , looks like it should have 12v , it grounds itself out to run the motor ....

Hummm , even with jumping the motor with wire its not for working

although it did manage to blow the fuse .. im wondering if the motor has seized

When you try and jump it with wires , it makes a horrible noise but nothing happens

Looks like i will be pulling the wiper motor

Finding a replacement could be interesting :(

i think I have one if it is the motor :)

is the motor turning?  it could be the mechanism that\'s broke (behind the bulkhead).

OK ... disaster averted :D

Took the motor out ( thats fun ! ) and got it into the garage .. got it all hooked up to a battery and nothing :(

Have the arm a waggle and she broke into life ( and then stopped ) , more wiggling , more stopping .. rinse and repeat and after about 5 mins , she would stay working

So tested both speeds and its fine .. looks like the motor was seized due to lack of use

Got it back on the car , put on the ignition and it auto parked .. it was just a pain to to get the arm back on .. but its all working now ..

SO .. hes is some useless info incase any one else has a issue

You can test the motor on the car , to prove that either its dead or you have a faulty switch

There is a block connector on the back of the motor with 6 wires

1   2
3   4
5   6

1 - Blue / White
2 - Blue
3 - Blue / Red
4 - Blue / Yellow
5 - Black
6 - Blue

Not sure why 2 and 6 are the same though ??????????

Anyways , from what i can gather the black is "ground" and blue is "perm live"

So if your wipers arent working , to test the motor put your ignition on and get a bit of wire , shove one end into either pin 1 or 3 and ground it to the chassis or battery , this will make the wipers work ( regardless of what the switch is doing in the car )

If the wipers work .. then you know its not the motor

I got nothing when i did this apart from a lot of sparks .. so i took off the motor ..

1 - remove the passenger wiper ( 14mm spanner )
2 - remove the grill ( 6 screws )
3 - pop the wiper arm off the back of the motor with a screw driver ( thru the holes that the grill covered )
4 - remove the motor - 4 10mm bolts

one it was out and on the bench , i made up some wires , and put live to 2 , earth to 5 and then used a 3rd wire to ground out either pin 3 or 5

Eventually it freed itsself up and worked fine ( im sure i said that up there somewhere )

Refitting is the opposite of reverse , and have fun getting the linkage to pop back on .. thats trick to say the least ..

Cause i have moved the motor arm , it wasnt in the same place , so one it was bolted into place and wired up , put the ignition on and it will auto park

you can then get the linkage back on

Simples eh :D

Sounds like your having fun. The FB ones had seized completely on me during some wet weather. Bit of cleaning and grease and they run like a dream.

Think the FD needs looking at too !

i love a free fix :D

Thing with these cars , everytime something breaks or doesnt work , i always think the worst ... and that its gonna be really hard or really expensive to fix

Well wipers packed in again today :(

Got the motor off but its bloody stiff to move .. I think its a gonner :(

whats annoying , it was working for the first 10 mins of driving and then just stopped in the middle of the windscreen

Anyone got a S5 wiper motor for sale :)

Is it something you can get rebuilt (if nobody has a spare).

Rockauto may stock a new one if you want to splurge  ;)

not sure how to get into it to see what's wrong to be honest

will have another play tomorrow , the motor is I the garage at the mo - spent over an hour trying to free it off

Got the battery on charge that I was using , seeing if getting some more "oomph" into that might help

It moves about every 10 tries and then just stops and you get some serious arching off the terminals

Has it got a thermal cut out on the motor? And after 10 turns that cuts out....might need greasing up....? Motor gb and all linkage.
Title: Re: Wipers have stopped working
Post by: grinder on March 08, 2015, 10:38:42 PM
no idea , its just really stiff .. you cant wind the arm without some serious force

im more shocked that it worked and then stopped .. I would have thought that it just wouldn't work

It didn't even blow the fuse in the fuse box

I will have another look tomorrow .. and then if that doesn't work .. need to locate a new wiper motor :(

Sounds like motor has thermal cut out switch...does sound like summit ceasing up ....can you seperate motor from linkage and try linkage by hand. ?

Lube and lots of it if you can get into the pesky thing.
Title: Re: Wipers have stopped working
Post by: grinder on March 09, 2015, 04:57:04 PM
getting into it is the challenge

And then working out if it has to go back with the arm a certain way or what .. or does it not matter as its where the wipers sit makes them sweep the screen ???
Title: Re: Wipers have stopped working
Post by: grinder on March 09, 2015, 07:15:46 PM
well took it apart and its still got all the grease in it from the factory so that's a good sign

took the actual motor apart and one of the magnets is broken in half , so Im assuming that its toast ?!?!

Got it back together ( now that's fiddly with the bushes ) - put power to it and it worked

Got the girlfriend to witness my awesomeness and its stopped working again

So I don't think its fixable ( esp with the split magnet )

SOOOOOOOOOOO does anyone have a S5 wiper motor , or does an FD one fit ( as per my other post )

Cheers

Stu

When you had the motor out did you try the the linkage movement ?
Title: Re: Wipers have stopped working
Post by: grinder on March 09, 2015, 10:23:49 PM
yeah its all smooooooooth :)

I think that :

1 - the magnet is broke in 2 ( the other is OK )
2 - its not attached to the housing

means its shot ( well I think it is )

Im pretty sure ( after some googling ) that the magnets are supposed to be glued into the housing so that they don't move , im assuming one has come loose when the wipers were on and then split

so I either need a new wiper motor .. OR .. I try and find a similar motor with the housing and see if I can swap that .. the mx5 one looks very similar but I have no idea of the size of one , or going to see if someone can rebuild it ( there must be an auto place near by that might have spare magnets .. ive looked all over and no idea where you can buy one from :( )

im sure someone on here deals with MX5's ( steve ?? ) so might try and contact him and see if can get some measurements from a MX5 one

There's a chap on blackpool road in preston that rebuilds alternators, he may be able to help.

tried a few places that rebuild starter motors and alternators , and they have all said that they cant source the magnets .. so im up a creek with no paddle and no boat !

That's why I was wondering if I could salvage the housing from a FD etc.. and hope that it fits !?!?

I just need the round canister on the bottom with the magnets :)

Title: Re: Wipers have stopped working
Post by: grinder on March 15, 2015, 11:32:03 AM
wondering if I can get the main body from the motor off something else now

I think £60 is pretty steep for a wiper motor ( although without it the car is useless )

just need some measurements off say an FD one , or a MX5 one , or even an 8  .. but im not sure where to get those from :(
