Picked up car from WGT this morning.
During the journey on motorway it was building snow fall n slush on lanes which made the 7 wobbly to drive on parts of the lanes.
Ended up on the slow line of motorway going 40-50 followinging the clear tyre for a long tense slow driving time.
Ended up hitting a pile of slush which made me lose control swagging left to right which I tired to correct but end up hitting the barrier on the overtaking lane area which smashed in the front end, really heartbroken n angry about myself as funds r really low due to WGT for the build.
Heard car is currently in a recovery centre which I don\'t know what the next steps r to do.
Pictures will follow, any help will be appreciated... :(:Grrr:confused::(
Gutted. I feel for you.
Gutted. See what the damage is, might just be panel, not structural damage. If its just panel damage then don\'t claim on insurance.

Michael, really gutted for you. I enjoyed your build thread and the attention to detail.
Hope the damage is easily repaired.
Good Luck.
Chris
Gutted to hear this,as you are one of the few that use high spec parts and the best of the best!
Sounds like your ok though and car doesn\'t look too bad, and hopefully fixable!
Am ok but guess it could have been worse....
My friend who followed me down took me home n left the scene of my car there, they told me to contact Weston recovery which am not sure of, anyone know who to contact? But then again I don\'t even know to tow this car back home or what....
Hate to be the one to say but I bet there\'s something bent chassis wise from that:(
Ah man, that\'s an absolute :censored::censored::censored::censored:ter! Hope it\'s ok to get fixed, must be gutted.
If that\'s the case then what do I do?
if you thinking oif selling i might be interested
Really gutted for you - beautiful car, as others have already said. It\'s easy to get caught out in those sort of conditions.
Fingers crossed that it\'s mainly cosmetic and you can get it sorted.
Really annoyed been my kid doing this n finally done n time to enjoy it but this happens, all the hard earned cash trying to fix it now...
Glad your ok mate. First thing to do is get it back home ASAP. As recovery cost and storage will soon add up. Get it home and assess the damage there.
Sorry for you fella, but as TRIND said get it home asap! If it is beyond repair get a new shell and let the Phoenix rise from the ashes.
I will call them 2moro morning n trailer it back to either my friends garage to scan the damages or trailer to my own home which I don\'t want to as don\'t want mum to see it n worry as she doesn\'t know...
I do feel for you. I hit black ice yesterday in mine it was the worst feeling in the world. By some miracle, and definitely nothing to do with my driving skill, I managed to miss the bmw and corsa that had just crushed into each other ahead of me. I shall have to be disciplined enough to put the rex away for the winter. The way I looked at it is I am lucky to have escaped with my life. That might not be easy for you on account of your loss.
I would say next step call your insurers for contact details of the recovery place. Take your car elsewhere. They will be charging extortionate fees just cause insurance companies will pay (at the expense of writing off your car). Get your insurance company to give you salvage rights if you wish to keep the car and negotiate the value agressively. If you are willing to accept a write off, get Clive to give the insurance company a valuation for yor car, otherwise you will be lucky to get more than £6000. However, the valuation service is only available to full members I believe.
Wishing you the best result,
Ambrose
So sorry to hear of this - even more gutted for you when I scrolled down to see the pictures you posted. I really hope the car is easily fixed and you can get it back on the road.
At least you are OK, which is the main thing.
Gutted for you , i really am
How far did you get from WGT ?
Ouch, really sorry to see that.
Due to the higher values of 99-spec models it wouldn\'t be as likely to be written off as most of our cars.
I really hope it\'s stored somewhere secure, it would be all too easy for some of your very nice genuine parts to \'go missing\' from it in this scenario.
Sorry I can\'t offer advice, other than, if you know who you want to fix it then get it there as soon as you can to fix.
If you go down the route of insurance then hopefully ALL your modifications are listed with the insurer including anything that you just had done at otherwise they can turn around and back out.
As keith has said get it out of storage becuase if the insurance dont pay for it, you will.
TBH, 99 spec or not insurance will write it off. New parts will soon add up. I can see an easy £6k on new parts there without labour, paint etc.
I feel terrible for you :(
Was everything still running ok post accident?
Looking at that I would expect suspension and cross member damage - anything can be repaired :)
All been said above, really chocked to see this but happy your walking around.
I know how you feel as we got badly rammed in our FD on the motorway a few years back and lots said, O\' your poor car and my reaction was "but we are walking around still" the car we can mend.
Huge setback for you but we know from the great build thread that somehow you will get your car back to how it was, I wish you well.
Sry to see but no injuries and hopefully repairable.
Gutted for you, glad you are Ok
Oh man, horrible to see this after your build thread. Hope you can get her back on the road :(
Gutted for you as well. First thing, as said you are ok, it\'s only metal and that means it can be fixed.
Second, as above get it home asap, then assess the damage. Mum may initially be a little upset (read as flip out!) But then you can take some time to sort it, and not have to worry about her finding out.
Plus if no insurance to deal with, and shell is no good, then all you need to do is swap it over.
Good luck with it all
Sorry to see this. At least there are fresh shells you can always swap stuff into.
Get it back as soon as possible and assess the damage from there.
Shaun
This has ruined my day, really sorry to hear this! :(
Hope there\'s light at the end of the tunnel!
Driving in those conditions must have been horrible and scary! :(
Keep us posted... keeping everything crossed for you :)
Phil
Am trying to sort out a trailer now n get it to my local garage which my friend owes to access the damage n what\'s needing done, I will get this back n running with standard cheap oem parts n focus on the bodywork when I build back cash, am not going to give up on this car.....
Sorry to read this, car was looking great when I collected the standard bonnet from you last year! Hopefully get it back on the road soon.
Bugger, that does look a mess but hope its not to bad once you get to sort things out properly. Glad you\'re ok

Everything was running fine, until i hit the bad slush which sent me to the barrier...
Got to the Recovery place today and found my car left there like a piece of scarp along with the other, there was no other option then to pay the realise fee of 430 and used there trailer which came to 190 to trailer it back home...

Bad times, i was actually close to tears sitting in a my friends car driving away from scene leaving the car behind.
Insurance will be unless i think but i called and told them that day as i was in a panic that someone is going to hit into my 7 so called to say i need the car picked up asap but halfway thru the police came and and i said the poilce is here so its ok and hanged up, not sure if that claim went thru....
Really sorry to hear and see what happened, is it only body damage or mechanical damage aswell? As long as ur okay that\'s the main thing.
Unsure what kind if damage as cannot seem to get the bonnet to lift but got a friend coming to check it on Friday...
If you need a shell mate I have a straight one, low miles in silver, had re amemiya lights fitted so some metal has been cut away there but otherwise its sound, also registered as 1.3, if you need it you can have it, regards Ade 07908242931

He wouldn\'t think that. Surely cheaper to trailer it to him? Sure he\'ll sort it out :burnout
Was thinking trailering to him but it will effect his business with a non runner there n he didn\'t agree with it also, text n calls n nothing back so am not going to bother him as I know he\'s really busy now. am just going to trailer it back to WGT.

Hope it\'s nothing to serious and can be sorted for a quick turn around :)
Glad your sticking with it!
As posted on my project album but just to update everyone here on the car that a message from pip saying:
"O/Side chassis rail bent back approx 20mm, its collapsed behind strut tower, across towards N/side 25mm and up approx 30mm, can’t see exactly how much damage unless engine and damaged front panels are removed"
He said it can be really expensive as its engine out n put on a jig but even tho that u might still end up with a bent car...
Head is everywhere atm but i will not give up of my project, its either a new shell or engine out and sell the shell and save up for another late spec rx7 which won\'t come for 1-2 years i reckon...
....new shell :3gears-rh
Why would you end up with a Bent car? Jig\'s don\'t work like that, most are Computer Operated nowadays and there is none of the guess work of old (if your getting the vibe we can repair it but it won\'t be right ever again take it some where else as the boss don\'t have faith in his Employees)
TBH mate i\'d have a second Quote anyway so you don\'t get your pants pulled down over it? Try not to get Blinded by the Damage this is Bread and Butter stuff to a Pro Bodyshop.
Also get a written Quote don\'t forget Pip will be a Middle man. I would always want to see where my car was getting repaired to weigh up the quality of there work....
All to do\'s to pay Pip the bill...,go home, stripped everything, sell parts and move on cos FD\'s in this country\'s not worth anything for the pennies like rx8\'s now selling for peanuts.
Knowing that\'s sick to the gut but move on dude.....

True, i will ask pip to give me that guys number so i can speak to him directly....
If i was in your position i would weigh up all the options before deciding, don\'t forget RxMotors has a Brand new Shell they have been trying to sell for a while but a reshell is a massive job.
It all kinda depends if you wanted to stay with fd\'s? because yes you could just strip it and sell the parts to get a return but i noticed you bought all the parts new so i don\'t doubt you have a fair bit wrapped up in the car and might not get close...... so you have to look at what the price of a Replacement? (without aftermarket parts) and can you repair yours for less?
I found it strange you sent it all the way to WGT when, as has been pointed out, he\'s only going to take it to his local bodyshop and add a commission, not knocking him, he\'s got a living to make as well. Plenty of good body shops in the central belt.

I guess i only found is comfortable trailering it back as i know he will know what he\'s doing with it and get the right parts etc, i don\'t know any good bodyshops up my area and guess i don\'t trust leaving my car with them...
Quote from: YAU730;852402I guess i only found is comfortable trailering it back as i know he will know what he\'s doing with it and get the right parts etc
At a Cost :)
also gives a single point of contact for all things FD. Although it\'ll cost a few pennies more, it\'ll mean if anything goes awry, it\'s just the one person to deal with - something that I wish I\'d done a few times over the years. Good call imo!
Good luck getting it sorted...
If i took engine out my car and sell as a shell, offers on the shell? just out of interest as its just a thought so its not a def i will take this route...
I would take the following away:
Rear lights n cover away,
window wipers,
Rear spoiler,
door handles.
Carbon bonnet (Depending on offer)

Wtf happened there?, somehow I posted three times in an instant bizzare
I don\'t think the bare bent shell itself would be worth anything, as non-bent ones are generally free or cheap. However I imagine you could get scrap value for it.
However any parts that you\'re not using on the new car could be sold separately, especially if you\'re selling the Tein coilovers or other aftermarket parts. But I think you\'ll need to remove the parts from the shell to get their value.

Are you on your iPhone? Sometimes it does it for me but clears once the screen is refreshed
Just alot of ideas what to do coming from my head every day, yesterday was find a R34 shell and Today find a NSX shell, but i guess those shells are rare and not a straight forward fitting n back to real life u can\'t beat a Rx7 with the selection of body kits and its just sexy in general.....
Putting a rotary engine into an R34 or an NSX would be a huge project, I\'ve never heard of anyone doing it so you\'d be the first and would have to overcome all the mechanical and electronic challenges along the way. And they\'re noticeably heavier than the FD. Plus cooling would be an issue with the mid-engined NSX. It\'s not like RC cars where you can just swap a different shell on top, I\'m afraid ;-)
In reality:
[1] Claim on your insurance. This is what we pay our premiums for, when we\'re ambushed by bad weather at speed. Assuming a (low) valuation of £8k, and worst-cast 25% deduction for letting you keep the car, that gives you a £6k fund to resurrect your dream.
[2a] Buy another 99-spec FD, swap over any bits that you want to keep from yours, and sell all the bits you don\'t need from the two cars.
-or-
[2b] Buy a shell and get Pip to rebuild it using the parts from your car. They do come up from time to time, you\'ll need to weigh up condition, year, paint colour/condition, registered capacity, location to find the best trade-off of all of these. Ask Pip for an estimate of cost to reshell before you go out and buy, obviously. AFAIK there is ZERO difference in the bare shells between the first 1992 and last 2002 FDs (anyone know different?), so it\'s all in the parts. I believe if you transfer enough parts from your current car you can keep the same registration, too (which would also presumably keep the current registered engine capacity).
Some links to ponder:
- I believe this brand new shell is still available, don\'t know at what price though

Stop bothering Pip, he\'s supposed to be busy fitting a ported RX8 engine in my MX5 this week! :)
You should get £8K off your insurers (plus storage/transport costs) and be able to buy it back for £2k. Can the repairs be done for less than £6K using used parts?
If it was me, I\'d get it fixed. The post-99s are pretty rare already.
Have the insurers told you which write-off category it is yet? If it\'s a cat C then you get the repairs inspected by autolign and get it taken off the HPI register.
Have you got all your modifications declared on your Insurance? Thought is ask as I don\'t think anyone else has
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;852495Have you got all your modifications declared on your Insurance? Thought is ask as I don\'t think anyone else has
I was the same... never told the insurance about my PP engine....LOL,
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;852495Have you got all your modifications declared on your Insurance? Thought is ask as I don\'t think anyone else has
I have all mods declared and go for "agreed value" wherever possible. This makes a big difference if you ever need to claim.
Without this, there are so few RX7s for sale at any one time that nothing will match your particular car. The engineer appointed by the insurers is very unlikely to know the relative value of yours. You may want to point them to an importer e.g. Newera to get an estimated value.
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;852495Have you got all your modifications declared on your Insurance? Thought is ask as I don\'t think anyone else has
I couldn\'t possibly condone fraud, but purely hypothetically, if there
were any discrepencies, it wouldn\'t be hard to remove the unwanted parts before the insurance assessor arrives to inspect it. So either way, I\'m assuming that a claim could be made for the car in the spec that it has been declared to the insurer.
As far as value goes, two stock \'99 cars sold last autumn
- a TW Whites car was up for £9.5k for ages, no takers. Cut the price to £7.5k and it was snapped up within a week or so.
- Martin\'s lovely blue car, was up for £7,750 when I saw it, but JonP beat me to it - I\'m assuming he paid more or less £7.5k (that\'s what I would have offered if he hadn\'t).
so a stock 1999 FD in good condition is definitely worth £7.5k. This one has a lot of nice parts on so should be worth a fair bit more.
Yes but if they see any modifications and they\'re not declared the I surance becomes void
Quote from: YAU730;852493Yeah, just off the phone to him not long ago and said the same as the eletrics are diff as i do remember the early ones work on a 8bit and the later ones are 16bit or something, becoming more a headache:2Mad:Grrr:Grrr:Grrr:Grrr
The engine ECU change was in \'96 (so series 7 & 8 cars need the \'16 bit\' Apexi ECU). However the ABS ecu was changed from 8 to 16 bit in Sep 2000. (According to http://www.rx7.net.nz/fd-jp-models.html ). That link doesn\'t mention any bodyshell changes, I wonder if they relate to the extra cooling apertures in the nosecone? ("The front-end\'s opening areas have also been increased by factors of 2.1 for the radiator opening, 1.8 for the intercooler duct, 1.8 for the oil cooler, and 1.6 for the front brake cooling duct intake over the previous RX-7." - http://www.fd3s.net/history.html#ENG )
- anyway, probably best to be guided by what Pip says, if he thinks it would be too difficult to rebuild a series 8 car in an earlier shell then that option moves off the menu, I guess, since it\'s rare to find series 8 bare shells.

They haven\'t seen the car yet. He has the car, so he has control over what state it is in when they come to see it, and what modified parts they do or don\'t find on it.
I\'m not condoning fraud, but if Michael does want to claim on his insurance, I don\'t see anything preventing him from doing so successfully in the current circumstances.

Not always, we had a number of people that the insurance assessor pulled there car up on aftermarket wheels and such things, what happened was they adjusted the Insurance premium and the owner of the car had to pay the difference before the car was repaired. We also had a few Total losses and that was a bit more hit and miss, if they think you deliberately misled them they will just kick the claim out (so no big mods) but they will sort a deal out if they think your legit.
But i suggest you always declare your MOds and get a report with an Agreed value to save any upset.

Be Very carfull..... The Police take Pics of the scene if they are called out and the Insurance have access to the Pictures. So alter the car at your own Risk, the Insurance got wise about people unmoding there cars a good while ago (there not completely stupid)
Made a choice, won\'t be claiming....
But will be taking the engine out and striping a few parts away and sell the shell as got a person who wants it.
Going to try and get a loan from the bank and buy Danny\'s white fd and drive that around for 1-2 years till money is good again then engine back in and happy days.
Ok, enough insurance discussion then.
Honestly, I\'m glad that you\'ve got a plan, and that it involves staying in FD ownership :) Best of luck sorting everything out.

Don\'t worry, am going to stay FD till death :Thumbsup!:Thumbsup!:Thumbsup!
Just going to take everything slow now as rushing doesn\'t work without cash, if am lucky enough to find a 99-2002 shell then i will take the re shell on so i can enjoy for temp use....
Good to here the above Michael :)
Phil
Good to hear that although a painfull decision you have decided a way forward and i\'m sure this way you will end up with the car you always wanted.
This way you will still end up driving an FD and I know how this feels as I owned and drove my FD for seven years and had to part with it, and still miss it !

Buy and sell, buy and sell, u will always buy a FD back some reason haha....
This might sound confusing but my plan was to buy Danny\'s late spec white 2000 of here and use as a temp run car until the late spec fd i want comes up for sell but will be a waste of money dropping in engine and drop standard back and sell and selling a car ain\'t easy unless u drop it to a stupid price! Danny\'s car is to my liking but its the 2.6 tax band that puts me off, i know its prob not much but am a really fussy person.
But Pip will take my engine out this week and will sell the shell so at the meantime everything will sit at his place till my funds n FD shows up, this could be 1-2 years depending on funds and whenever the car i want will show up, guess am going to be feeling crap for the next 1-2 years....
I will be selling a few parts to build up funds for now but engine will stay in 1 piece and not selling anything off that.....
Michael,
Bad news, I spoke to you along time ago about HKS T51R turbos under a different username, Had to sign up again.
Did you get this all sorted out? If you need some help saving some pennies with stripping the car or rebuilding let me know..

Hello Chris
Who are you ? appearring from nowhere from Ellon and never heard anyone do rebuild in NE.
tell us about yourself and what you can do?
also i\'m frae Aberdeen............
Hi mate I was on here previously with username natthapon. I had the GT300 kitted rx7.
As for rebuilding I can pull a car apart and put it back together.. I wouldn\'t take an engine apart (internals) and rebuild it however i\'d leave that to the engine pro\'s. I would be happy to give my own fd engine a go though but not someone elses.
It was more to help that lad out and avoid a nice big bill for simply stripping the car.
