Title: Single turbo?
Post by: brodierx7 on February 13, 2013, 07:42:21 AM
Hey folks. After running twins for 5 years I think the time has come to go single, so I was wondering what\'s the best turbo kit to go for? Also the best port? I would like good power but also fairly reliable power but since where I live I can\'t get v power or anything! All I can get is 95ron. So this does affect power but I\'m still hopping I can run single.

You can run single up to about 400hp.
GT35/40 or Apexi rx series are good turbos for lower power.
That TD07 would also suit that is for sale on here.
Map would have to be done for 95 ron too.

400 is what I\'m kind of after but could be doing well to get that with just 95ron. What kind of port would you recommend?

Extend port would be fine with it.
The fueling and timing are more important with the low octane fuel.

Also would I be better off buying a whole kit or everything separate?

So I take it that bridge port and large street port etc are only for very high power? Always liked the sound of a bridge but if its wasted then not much point? What\'s involved with a port being done? Does this require a engine rebuild? Or is engine left if all is well?

Engine has to be split for porting to be done.

Need need for a bridge port at 400 HP unless your wanting it for the brap, plus you will  better idle and mpg with a good street port

So would a engine normally get a full rebuild during this I take it? Well it would be nice to have the brap, is bridge more money than normal port? Anyone know rough cost of porting and fitting single?

For a turbo kit plus fuel upgrade, intercooler radiator your looking 2000 plus. Porting doesn\'t cost much more from a street port to a bridge. I would say a hundred or so. Porting doesn\'t take that long or its not that hard but its knowing what to do that you pay for.

Yes when porting you would be paying for a full rebuild. £3500 for a standard rebuild plus warrenty.

where on earth did you pluck that figure from grant?

i suppose its possible buying a used turbo kit and ebay crap....but you\'ll probably have to spend more sorting it out when it all goes pear shaped a few months down the line......

Don\'t worry Ed wont be buying cheap eBay crap. I see you turbo there but to be honest I need to speak to someone as I don\'t have much idea on what set up to run yet.

the thing to do is ask people who know not people who think they know and you\'ll be fine.

not having a dig at anyone....its just time after time i see noobs asking experienced people their opinions then someone chimes in with internet nonsense..and the advice given is totally ignored.

youll find alot of experienced people on here so ask loads of questions and use the search facility

what are your goals for the car?

I said 2000 plus, your kit is 2200 and 2400, so I\'m not far off at that. Your stuff is brand new too Ed, I know someone that got at T51 Kai, manifold, wastegate and down pipe for £900 second hand.

Upgraded secondary injectors, FPR etc is ABOUT 750 if someone fits It for you.

than you need an intercooler and maybe a radiator, not necessary but I would change it. Lets say £600?

That\'s 2250;)

I\'m surprised no one has said to stay with the twin turbos due to the guy only wanted 400 ponies.

REW & Cosmo Street Port
1. 13B                 £ 650.00

REW & Cosmo Bridgeport
1. 13B                 £ 850.00

Taken from someone\'s website, over priced IMO, couple hundred difference like I said. I\'m not saying its easy Jay so don\'t take offence, it is just essentially drilling and then removing metal with a die grinder, or as some like to use a dremmel, lol.

To say I don\'t know what I\'m talking about and my advice is Internet nonesense is taking the :censored::censored::censored::censored:. I know a lot of stuff not by looking in the Internet but by actually doing things and speaking to people who actually do these things in real life. My dad is an engineer, so are the majority of his friends. Some of my friends run their own drag car, consistent 8 seconds, of which one of them works for holsets turbo R&D department.

So my advice isn\'t a load of :censored::censored::censored::censored:e, and its not as if I\'m telling it is the only advice to listen too because everyone else knows nothing is it?

I would say if you want to go down that route just sell yours and buy one already done.  Add to that list ECU, mapping, clutch and various other bits and pieces to do the job properly.  Why potentially blow £8-9k when you can buy one for a damn sight less.  Just my opinion in the current market :)

No offence taken,  apparently I don\'t build or port.
Martin has a good point, other turbo\'s are turbonetics which can be built to your spec or the correctly sized Borg warner,  imho no need to build the engine.

As said, it would work out much, much cheaper to buy a car with everything already taken care of.

If you don\'t already have it, you will need (amongst other things, and ignoring brake and suspension upgrades)
Turbo Kit (including air filter)
Fuel system upgrades (rails, pump, FPR, injectors, lines)
Larger intercooler (if you don\'t already have one)
Larger radiator/mint condition stock one (to cope with the extra heat generated)
Good clutch (don\'t cheap out on this part)
Ignition upgrades (leading coil/ignition amplifier/new leads)
New plugs (more expensive than you\'d think)

Plus the cost of porting etc.

If you are looking at the 400\'s or so then speak to DanDan - his car will be up for sale soon and mechanically, everything that needs doing is done. Plus it has a relatively recent rebuild, is ported, and has makes very good power from very low revs. It\'s also got some awesome other touches that are pretty unique.

Porting is an art. To say it\'s easy and just grinding metal is short sighted, and hugely insulting to the guys out there that do it well. It\'s like saying that that dude who build a tiny V12 isn\'t really that talented - it\'s just cutting metal, after all.
Likewise, programming computers is just typing, writing a book is just scribbling letters.

I did actually say that porting is easy but you pay for what people know, meaning that anyone can port it\'s having the knowledge to do it right that counts.

To build or have built a ported single turbo car your looking at 7-10,000 easily, I forgot to add in clutch and ecu when I first mentioned price, that\'s at least another £1,000 to start off with.

You can easily get a street ported single turbo for £6,000 if you look around. Then you can take it to one of the specialists to have it checked over to be exactly sure it\'s running sweet.

If you have £10,000 to spend you could even go to the extreme of buying someone\'s v8 converted FD but you would frowned upon by most:(

Grant,

if you look at my post above i did say it would be possible with secondhand.......but i still think its a stretch......after you factor in mapping fitting..etc.(plus other little bits that come up..and we all know they alsways do)......also a t51 would be hopeless on a stock pored motor so not much point brining that up:2Confused
Title: Single turbo?
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on February 15, 2013, 02:15:24 PM
Ok cool, by no means was I calling you a keyboard warrior. T51 is not good for stock ports, was just using it as an example for a good second hand setup for a ported motor.

I do agree its a stretch but it could be done, if you install it all yourself that is.

All in it can get very expensive, but at only a 400 HP target it can be done with the gt35 like Carl originally said, but who will be happy with that, we always want more power..... Eventually.

Thanks for all the comments and info guys. I have thought about selling my one and buying one already done but I don\'t know how easy it would be to sell mine? Also is there any nice singles for sale just now? Preferably black or white? Only reason I wanted to go down the road of putting single on mine is because I\'ve ha the car for 5 years so I know what it\'s like and what\'s been done and I\'m just starting to get it looking the way I want it. I feel like I\'ve spent to much to go back now lol, but as you say another £7000-£10k is a lot more. I\'ve bought hks induction kit/stock mount intercooler/hks bov/power fc/Rota grids/sibon carbon wing/hsd coilovers/titanium exhaust and few other bits but that\'s all I can think of just now. Hmm Mabie I should have a go at selling?

That is the problem you may end up buying other peoples problems, you could keep the stock twins for now, all you need is either 4x850 or 1600 secondaries with a rail, fuel pressure reg and due to 95ron i would say water injection, you have the intercooler, 1.1 bar happy days. If this is not enough just but a single on it and your done as everything is in place.(maybe clutch if not uprated)

I really want the single just to get rid of the rats nest and get more power but fairly reliable as if anything goes wrong it has to go on ferry and travel a lot of miles to get to anyone that can fix it. Just wont be happy until I have a single lol. Suppose I need to phone around and get some prices on going single.

you thought about trying non sequential? Eliminates most of the rats nest and give an idea of what going single would feel like, if you go for the basic conversion you can always switch back if your not happy.

Well it would be a bit of a shame to rebuild a engine that is still ok, but it could take years to go bang...... Haha obviously u know what Orkney is like then, yes the roads are crap but always want more power and Mabie wouldn\'t mind a track day at Knockhill to.

You\'ll not get more power but it will help to make your mind up that going single is the correct thing to do. If you like it then new injectors, fuel pump, fuel regulator (poss FMIC) and a remap should help increase power nicely. Then you are set up for going single if you decide in the future to increase power more ( a clutch would probs be a good idea too) It\'s what i\'m planning on doing

Think I\'m pretty set on going single although this is a good idea but for the cost of traveling an accommodation while the work is getting done, will be high. Which is why I\'d rather go down and get it all done in one go. After looking at single turbo rx7s that\'s for sale, they seem quite cheep!? If its goin to cost me 10k to get it done I could buy one already done and then sell my old one.....
