I seem to have been stupid and bought an FC on a bit of a whim. I think I felt it needed a bit of love and attention.

I\'m currently a little concerned I may have just thrown my money down the drain. I didn\'t go and see it as it was a bit of a last minute impulse buy. It\'s being picked up on Wednesday morning. So will know then, if it\'ll make the track car it\'s currently destined to be or not.
As long I can get it running and the rot isn\'t that bad I\'ll start stripping it. It seemed a good idea 1 minute before the end of the auction.
One thing is if it isn\'t a suitable project do you think I could move it on again and not loose a huge amount of money? Or would breaking it recoup me the money.
I really do hope I can breath some life back into it, as I think It\'ll make a cracking cheap track day car.
If you need to you should be able to resell it without losing anything... Although you might actually turn a profit if you break it, depending on the condition of the parts.
So long as it runs it should be good. I would check for rust underneath straight away due to its age. If it going to be for the track repairs don\'t need to be immaculate as your probably going to break something eventually.
Just beat me to this car lol... Good luck and if its not what you want then give me a shout buddy
I am looking forward to seeing if I can get the engine running again. Which was the main draw to the car, as it\'s nice little challenge to have. I think I broke ever rule I have when it comes to buying cars with this one.
Arnie: I\'ll sure be in touch if the car isn\'t what I\'m looking for.
like the other have said , get it running and then check for rust ( or vice versa )
You can prob break it for double that amount though
Dont go silly with the prices like £100 for a wheel etc.. and you will do OK
I have brought one back to life in the past as have many others , so get some pics up when you get it ( not like the upside down ebay ones ) and ask away :D
The car has arrived. Gave it a quick clean as it was very green and took some pictures.

Problems I\'ve spotted so far.
* Water in the car. I\'ve pulled out the carpet and mopped out what i can. But the good thing is the floors look solid and only some patching on the drivers side.
* Theres rust on the drivers side rear arch, also some on the drivers side near the windscreen and some on the sunroof.
* Whoever broke into the car has pulled the top of the door so now doesn\'t seal.
* The brake master cylinder needs new rubbers as the pedal has no resistance and is low on fluid.
* The fuel filler flap pop doesn\'t work
Other than that car looks to be saveable. I\'ve turn the engine over by hand and it turns. But couldn\'t find a battery with enough charge in to turn it over. But the electrics and alarm seem to be functioning. ECU\'s have stayed dry.
I\'ve had to leave it as it\'s started to snow.
Looks loverly :)
looks good, hopefully then engine is a runner. all the best!
if you find a place for cheap brake rubbers then let me know .. i think mines is leaking aswell :(
the water could be coming in cause the door doesnt seal
shouldnt be too hard to find a door though :D
Been trying to get it going today. But have had to give up as the battery needed recharging. After draining 40L of old fuel, I put in some new Vpower. Making sure the engine wasn\'t flooded, the car turns over on the starter. Seems like it\'s lightly firing on one rotor. It\'s got spark and fuel is being injected to both rotors. The plugs come out of each rotor after trying to start it both being wet. Tried a bit of easy start doesn\'t make any difference.
When deflooding it you can hear the compression escaping through the spark plug hole. There is no change in pitch or amount of air being forced out.
Should the oil pressure build just being turned over on the starter. At the moment gauge doesn\'t flicker.
Any help would be much appreciated.
One other thing I\'ve noticed is you get a ticking from the around the engine with the ignition on and before turning it over.
how loud is the ticking exactly ??
I had loads of probs trying to start mine , i had fuel , spark but it just wouldnt run
I even had dash lights ( i think )
But i had loud clicking and it just wouldnt run
Does this sound like yours ?
If so , FIRST thing to check , ECU .. passenger footwell , make sure that its dry etc.. with no sign of mosture
I spent god knows how many hours ( prob into the 50 figure ) trying to get mine running , swapped out the ECU and it worked like a charm
have a read : http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29946
Thanks Grinder
The clicking sounds, sounds like a relay ticking away. So not massively loud.
I pulled out the ECU. As I was concerned that it might have had water in it, there was a bit in the passenger footwell when I got the car. But looking inside the ECU and there was no corrosion I could see.
If the rotary isn\'t meant to tick with the ignition on, then I would go with your suggestion on the ECU.
Also does the rev counter move a little when turning the car over? Mine\'a static.
errr not sure about the rev counter to be honest ( i really cant remember )
It certainly worth trying to source a ECU to test .. i think i paid about £20 for my last one
I have about 5 in the garage now .. but i have no idea what works and what doesnt :(
oh yeah and there should be no "ticking" noises when you put the ignition on
if you plough thru that thread , you will see what steps i took etc..
But from past experience .. defo try an ecu if you can get your hands on one ..
if you get REALLY stuck i can prob lend you one to try
and i assume you dont live in a 40 mile radius of me either ??
I\'m sure mine ticks with the ignition on sometimes. A relay tick or something. Its never bothered me or the car so kinda just thought it was normal.
Make sure the battery has had a really really good charge. If you\'ve got fuel and spark it should fire up. Worst case a tow start will help.

Had a good read of your thread Grinder.
Plan of attack tomorrow is make sure all grounds are good. if that doesn\'t get it started I\'ll pull out the ECU and have a good look and see if it has any damage. The one you pulled out of your car looked pretty bad. I\'ve only got one relay/solenoid clicking away none at the front.
Batteries are hooked up and charging for tomorrows attack.
I pulled mine out after a leaking vert roof. Didn\'t see any damage at first, had to study it really hard to see the corroded copper on one foot on a resistor. Made my car go in emergency mode/fail-safe.
It\'s now running. After a bit more fiddling it start straight up. Ran up to temp and seems fine.
Next on the list is brakes and then sorting out a few electrical gremlins.
thats great news :D
Well done
Well done mate. Good to hear.
Ade
Thanks guys. I\'m pretty chuffed it\'s up and running
Next question: I\'ve noticed a water leak at the water pump. So who is the best cheapest place to source a gasket or pump?
Bit of an update
The car has been fighting me at every turn! I\'m seriously thinking of sell once I\'ve sorted the problems and got an MOT on the car.
I\'ve had water leaks galore got to the bottom of these and now the water pump weep hole has started leaking.
Had to replace a couple of oil injection hoses due to being brittle and broken. Now looks like the oil metering pump isn\'t pumping. So bought a used one of those
Vacuum lines being broken and brittle, so all these had to be replaced.
The car has self locking activated when the engine is running. So the door shut when I was checking under the bonnet. I only have one set of keys, so was locked out with car running. Wasn\'t to difficult to get back in but just another annoyance.
To top all of this off, got the V5 back and discovered the car was a CAT C write off back in 2005.
So I think I\'ve lost all love for the thing and once it is all up and running it\'ll be going up for sale to hopefully cover what it\'s costing me.
Here are some update pictures. I think I can safely say it\'s an improvement from 2 months ago. Still got some jobs to do to tide it up a bit more. It really needs a good machine polish.

The new correct front bumper looks a lot better than than the one that arrived on the car

The Skyline R32 GTR wheels look a lot better than the flakey old original on the car. I\'ve got the originals on ebay and hopefully they\'ll cover the cost of the replacement (£70 bargain)

The car does show its age and does have a good few battle scars to show for its years

The seats are a bit of a mismatch on the colour. The interior is nearly finished but needs a few bits to finish. But it might be all getting ripped out if final make my mind up to track day it.
Now just got to get it MOT\'d. I\'ve found classic insurance for £190 which I think is pretty cheap. It\'s only £30 more than my Land Rover 90 with a good deal more poke.
ohhh a 90 , thats a toy i would like :D
