Title: help on buying an RX-7
Post by: Bigears on July 22, 2004, 05:33:23 PM
Hi, this is my first post on this forum, I am looking at buying
an RX-7 as a 2nd car, but I don\'t know a great deal about them to be honest.

I currently drive a Subaru Impreza Turbo, and never had to insure an import, who would you all reccomend, and what things should I be looking out for?

I am going to the Jap Show at Billing this weekend so I hope I will be able to speak to someone there.

Craig

hello mate, you on the SIDC stand?
Insurance wise it could work well for you if you fit into the right slots in that if yer 25+ have 2nd car (scoob) & can keep the RX7 garaged & do low milage then the classic car policy AON do should suit you a treat & wont use yer NCB. eg i was paying into 4 figures on a mildly modified UK scooby with 3 years NCB & now only <£800 on the RX7 without the NCB so worked well for me......
Any other questions dont be shy & hope to see ya at the weekend i\'ll be tormenting many of the SIDC folks anyway & plying the loud 22B owner with stella + his wife to see if we can get her to vomit by all the scooby tents again this year (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/ed/laughpf.gif) pmsl

Thanks for the replies,

Car won\'t be on the SIDC stand (although I am a member), we\'re torn between two clubs! We\'re camping with the Northampton Scooby club.

Hope to meet up and have a chat with a few of you, perhaps someone may know of a nice RX-7 for sale.

Heres to Beers & BBQ on Saturday night.

:)

Hello matey :wave and welcome to the board!

You\'ve probably seen them already, but there\'s a lot of topics aimed at guys like us who are looking into buying an FD and everything involved therein.

You\'ll find the guys here are super helpful (check out Gurj\'s exhaustive list of importers there!) and always willing to give advice and guidance. Sure Si has a smilie for that.

Have a look at the board specifically about buying a rotary, there\'s lots of really good info there. Have you identified the model/spec of the car you\'re looking for? There\'s a list of things to look for, most people would recommend being very cautious about mileage, as a re-build costs in the region of £3k, and anything over 50k miles is getting near rebuild land in most cases!

A starting place might be these links:

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=394 - Check out Brian\'s essay!!

http://www.rx7.net.nz/fd-jp-models.html  - very handy table for identifying models

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=256  - Common probs/buying advice.

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7143  - Some detail on the \'Bathurst\' edition FD, in case you see one advertised!

Anyway, all the best mate. There\'s also some debate on the best way to actually get hold of an RX-7...be it through an importer such as Brian (rotaryimports.com) or Miguel (neweraimports.com) or a private sale here in the UK etc. Have a look through all the info around here, and just ask some of the more knowledgeable people (Lee,Gurj,Si,Andy,Brian,Glenn,Kevin etc etc etc!!!!) if there\'s anything you need to know!

Best of luck!

:D

Just had a closer look at the red one mate, the interior is even better than i thought! Did you notice the leather on the gearnob gaiter/hand brake and door cards, also the lovely silver paint job on the dash/centre section? Veeeery nice.

Been checking on eBay as well, really funny some of things people say about the cars, like \'Efini\' is a special limited model with better spec...one chap is claiming his car was built to exactly replicate the F&F FD, yet hasn\'t got one part that is the same, and even has a Ferrari (!!) steering wheel!

Just had a brainwave...think we should hook up a webcam to Si\'s PC, call it Si-CAM and make a fortune as hapless viewers the world over see Si indulge in random fits of keyboard-bashing and other such activities! :cool

Be the next big reality show!

Yeah my bad. I could have phrased that a bit better. Just to clarify, the keyboard is the ONLY thing that i was talking about Si bashing, ok? :rollin :rollin

Well i think despite my best efforts the big angry smilies are sure to come out as soon as he stumbles over here!

When you called rxmotors the other day I answered and we talked about your headlight cover etc. You maybe didn\'t realise when I answered and said it was Brian that it was mwaa.
While talking about your car being ready for JAE the phone went dead sob sob and that was the last I heard from you sob sob.
Hope it\'s sorted now mate.
I\'m in a hotel on dialup connection it\'s so slow.
Anyway i\'m doing a Si and hanging up soon:D
