Title: 450bhp 20b Mazda3 race car
Post by: Martin Price on December 22, 2012, 09:04:45 PM
I’ve done a search and I can’t find any threads relating to this.
I don’t really know much about the BTCS but it looks as though it’s a bit of an anything goes series, a bit like the Euro Saloons or Northern Saloons over here but on a bigger budgetAnyway here\'s a couple of links, one to the website of the place that built the car and a couple of YouTube clips of the car in action. I think the cars been pretty successful and sounds ace.Cheers Martinhttp://www.va-motorsport.com/projects/?page=25 (http://www.va-motorsport.com/projects/?page=25)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaqE2qWdskg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaqE2qWdskg)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XW79DB3rt0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XW79DB3rt0)

Good finds of a car I had only really heard of :Thumbs-up.

I saw a poster of the car out in the Netherlands last year and knew nothing of the car before then, and was told the body choice was the only way to get Mazda remotely interested as they were not interested in anything out of production.

I\'ve since seen glimpses of the car in what I thought was the Belgium Supercar series which has visited Brands in the past on Motors TV.

If i am correct the car has been build by Pettit racing in the usa.
They first had a fd to race with. But as far as i know it had the 13b in it.
They have also an other fd for their own. I saw it a couple of months ago at Kees Hoebeke. Clive nows who i meen :Giggle

Green FD used to race in that series, i think....

I´m just wondering about the rules in that series. What kind of cars is allowed. Because that Mazda with that layout isnt based on anything. :)

Still, awesome looking and sounding car... :)

The FD was bought from Pettit in the USA and served for 3-4 years. The engine work was done by WGT (after I send them to Pip) Then the car got to old by FIA standards (new crash testting etc) and the team switched to a new chassis with a 20B engine built by Carlos...something in Miami. Very well known rotary engine builder.. his name just slips my mind.

Car has been very reliable since it\'s debut and competitive... For 2013 I don\'t really know what the plan is  but the driver is a customer of mine so I\'ll try to keep in mind and ask him next time

When you say the "new chassis" are you refering to the Mazda3 car?
Also how reliable is a N/A PP 20b producing 400+hp? How may race hours between rebuild and what would need changing?

20B conversion roughly £20,000. Just as reliable as any setup so long as you have a good tune

If running fuel injection you would be looking at around £25,000.00+ for an N/A PP 20B with around 450hp. It would require a refresh after a season of racing in club class types of racing where for example races were around 20 mins with similar qualifying.
That having been said it could also be built with around 400 hp for endurance racing and should be able to last for a 24 hour race before needing a refresh.
We had a 2 rotor engine that did 2 full 24 hour races and 11 hours in a 3rd race before the car had a serious incident with a Porsche and then after being repaired it still did alot of Britcar races with no rebuild. It eventually covered more than 10,000 race miles before needing a rebuild. Power was 365 hp with turbocharging in a power to weight limit.
Refresh prices are alot less than the initial outlay.

Carlos Lopez? I think he did some engines for the lmp cars a few years back.

Lopez was the name yes.  The chassis is some sort of a half tub Mazda 3 chassis so not a full body shell nor a silhouette. The engine is a pp 20B wit just over 400 hp (safe tune) but can produce +- 450 at max.

They have 2 engines which are being switched out when needed and sen dback to the US for rebuilds

I was thinking of a n/a 20b for my car but I already had the 7 engine so it made sense to use it but I\'d love to get one in eventually.
20k seems like a lot of money though, I suppose a n/a engine whether its a 13b or 20b compared to a turbo engine needs all different internals due to the fact its going to be making its power at around 12k rather than 8k.

The internal are the same. The differences being that the eshaft is longer and one of the centre plates is twice as thick to get the side port same configuration, but a side port isn\'t used in a PP setup. I should imagine there are modification to the shaft to be made for oil cooling and balancing.

The engine will make the power below 10,000 rpm it all depends on your port shape and Inlet track length to bring the torque lower down the rev range.
