Title: Exhaust emissions & Lambda
Post by: Ricco_04 on December 16, 2012, 06:35:31 PM
Ok I have now taken the car off the road as I couldnt get it through mot (not a bad thing as with all the rubbish road conditions)

Anyway, for the last few years my FD has got through the test with no cat at all, on a cat test (0.3% & 200)

However, this years test saw it at 9%!!!!! :2eek (air pump on - tested it too and its sucking like a goodun :Giggle)

So I went back and stuck the standard cat on to see what difference it made......urm none

Importantly the lambda shows as 0.7 which is very rich, if I could correct this to 1, would this pass then do you think?  Also what could have gone wrong for this to happen?

Tested so far :
Air pump - Good
TPS - All in range
No exhaust leaks

On another note, the lambda used to be tested from 0.97 to 1.60 (yes I do mean 1.60 rather than 1.03)  but now im only allowed 1.03 - any info?

Sorry for all the questions, I just need help as im outta ideas now.  (I have brought a bottle of cataclean to wack in on 1/4 tank but I would think this would just mask the problem till the next time :/)

No One have any ideas? :s

Are you running an Apexi? If not I would forget worrying about the cost of exhaust in your other post, buy an apexi and then you can use the apexi to pass the emmisions!

Fd have different emissions limits to other cars, by the way what year is your car? Cause from mid 95 back on non uk cars the lambda doesnt come into it, the limits are hc 1200 ppm and hc is 3.5%

Yeah, have the apexi and tried reducing the fuel to 70% (1krpm 2krpm & 3krpm) but the engine just cut out when the throttle was pressed to bring the revs up to 2500 :xconfused

Its a 95\' UK car so the limits are 0.3% co and 200HC\'s - Which as your probably thinking is a PITA!!

I know the emissions are different for the cars over the years but im being specific by asking (on the other thread) what readings someone is getting with just a sports cat.  Unfortunately it doesnt seem like anyone has any readings :(

Thanks for the replies :cheers

Did you try dropping it out via pim voltage settings, i have always followed that guide :) But i have a 92 so not that difficult to pass.

Years ago i had a 96 that was being a pain to get through, it was an import with no cat or Apexi. There was a how to somewhere with a guide to get through the more stringent emissions test. It involved getting a piece of broom handle, about an 1" long, and drilling a 6mm hole through it and then inserting in the air pump hose, then gradually increase the hole size to allow the right amount of air through without upsetting the lamda. I got there in the end but ended up melting the exhaust probe at the testing station which cost me £90

Haha I like that!  Broom handle engineering ftw!!  Not heard of that but very good to know as there is a restrictor somewhere in the air pump stuff.

Thing which if naffing me up is that it has passed fine for the last few years so im trying to work out whats gone wrong rather than trying to find a way around it

Forgot to say, I cant remember where I dropped the values.  Just that I dropped them to 70% and the car just stalled when the throttle was applied to bring the revs up.

I think I need to sort out why its over fueling (lambda at 0.7) but I just dont know what could have changed since last time it was mot\'d :S

2 things it could be,

1. Fuel pressure regulator is failing causing the fuel pressure to be higher.
2. O2 sensor has become contaminated (more likely than above) a new one can be purchased for around £27 on eBay.

As above, get the probe out and test it. :wave

I only know the idle test for the apexi, being that you have to rev it to 2500 I wouldn\'t know what to do!

Ok cool, I will have to have a play with the values come MOT (just to see but need to get it working properly)

As for the probe, I guess I should have mentioned that earlier (doh!)  Anyway the map has not been changed for a couple of years but its always been run in closed loop (lambda is actually switched off)  Now I know the first response would be to turn it on  but, as I say, its been fine with it off and had always been turned off. So im slightly confused :/  (I know the tuner turns it off when he\'s mapping but he reassures me its left off on purpose and is better this way)

I take it then that most people have the lambda switched on? (if they have a PFC)
