Title: Import duty again
Post by: RobMatthews on December 04, 2012, 01:14:50 PM
So thought I would get some bits needed for the rx4, seatbelts and some chrome window trim few plastic etc, from the usa.

Total came to $519-50/ £336-95 all delivered

Got the Parcelfarce letter today to say they have calculated I owe £59.59 for customs duty, and £409.18 for vat? Thats a total of £476.77 on something I\'ve paid £336.95 for?

From what I read on hmrc it should be 2.5% +vat?

Anyone know what the tax/vat threshhold for importing older 2nd hand stuff in is?
All I can find is atomatic messages or to pay and try to sort it out after?

I basically take the price including delivery then add 32% plus £8. Pretty much gets you to the correct figure.

I dont think there is a threshold for secondhand parts. You pay duty on anything over £14 IIRC

Sorted it now, suprised it got done so quick tbh!
No duty as it works out less than £9 quid so just paying vat on the 336.95, Shame we got to pay full price vat on old/2nd hand parts but there we go, thats where we live.

Who is the courior you get stuff sent with.

Sometimes you just cant pick and choose where you buy from with the second hand market.

The stuff iv had sent was with australia post.

When I got my rx4 diff from oz they sent it UPS and had a fair but extra to pay for that. It\'d the luck of the draw really. Also if its marked up as warrenty replacement parts it goes through in noticed. Prototype goods works too, that\'s what my WI came through as!
