Title: FDrift taxi 2013
Post by: rx7ali on December 02, 2012, 07:09:35 PM
With the end of 2012 drift season I\'ve reflected on the car\'s performance and reliability and been very happy.

This year I\'ve suffered only from some minor electrical glitches, normal cosmetic damage and failure of the twins. So based on this i\'ve decided to push on and go ahead with the single conversion I\'ve been putting off for so long. My main concern with the work is that I don\'t want to lose any reliability, so I will be ensuring that heat I\'m containing heat and cooling down as much as possible. This means, heatwrap, turbo beanies, and heat sheilding around the lower inlet manifold. The other consideration is that the twins are water cooled, where as the turbo I currently have is only oil cooled, so I will most likely be adding fans to my twin oil coolers to to help out with this. And finaly... a workings set of gauges is definatly needed for oil temp and pressure.

Although the turbo conversion is the main focus of the winter rebuild, I\'m also going to be giving the cars apearance a refresh with a new kit and also address the faded diff mounts which i believe are the cause of the rear end feeling a little loose at times.

I\'ve already been booked in for Japfest @ Donnington for 2013 so the pressure is on to get the car sorted

Here\'s a quick break down of the work which I\'m planning to do

Engine Work

Apearance:

Handeling

Electrical

I\'d like to thank the help of my sponsors RE-CTS & Core-renewables.co.uk who are helping keep my drifting going.

And also give a mention to Danny & Dale (DM-Motorsports) who are and will be (if they like it or not) going to be helping me with services and moral support when it all goes wrong over winter and I\'m panicing about getting to the first Taxi event in the new year :o

The Strip Down

Bumpers, skirts and wings off to aid with having access.. and make way for the new kit

There\'s no where enough room to do the requried work with the big V-Mount in the way.

Taking the twins out is a right PITA... I\'ve only had to do it 4 times now (including the non sequential work).. and I\'m all ready sick of it!!! BRING ON THE SINGLE

Here\'s most of the bits from string down.

Next was test fitting the single...

Also did a test for rough fit of the downpipe... but this needs cutting and the 3" vband welding on to mate with the v-band rear housing.

Final strip down was the injector rail removal which is a scary buisness with an extremely old wiring loom to move out the way... Horror stories of disturbing wiring come to mind....

Question for people while its fresh in my mind...

The coolant pipe that runs to the throttle body, this is for the wax rod for cold start right? Can i remove & blank this off?

Yes you can but have to tickle the throttle a bit on start up

Ok so while sourceing an alternative single kitt I\'ve managed to crack on stripping the engine to bare block
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DMRt5NOfQZM/UL5RVdBQ83I/AAAAAAAAA1I/DcQEMBgKU10/s649/20121203_234255.jpg)
stripping back the Loom (will be coming out alltogether very soon)

and a bit of bay cleaning (SO GAY!)

Soon to come is the test fit of new single kit, followed by more stripping, cleaning and some polishing of UIM. Also new body kitt arives today WOOT!!!
Then i just need to work out how to put it all back together

Clean the block a bit if you can, good for a good 10-15hp :) painting it gains another 10hp also.

What turbo have you got?

LoL... trust me cleaning is the last thing i want to be doing. Specialy as it\'s likely to be just getting filled with tyre crap and spilt PS fluid again all year. But while its all apart and i dont have the dosh to complete everything in one go it seems like the right thing to do.

Plus more likely to attract sponsors with a tidy car :wave

I\'ll post up full details of the kitt on Saturday after collecting :King

Yay. lots of smileys to chose from!!

One of my sponsors Keith from RE-CTS (Rotary Compression testing specialist) came through today in delivering my new outfit for the car.

The boy was testing it out for size:

Some prep work and then a quick coat of Matt Black is in order
But for the moment it goes with the rest of the bits in the "storage unit" lol

Needs a fresh heat wrap and possible a new oil feed.. but nothing that won\'t stop a test fit this weekend. :D
This may put a hold on the bay cleaning ;)

Had to strip the down pipe, wastegate and my break stopper in order to sqeeze it in but the test fit is done:
Did a test fit with my DIY vmout in place to test for space for the filter. My fear was that the idleller pulley would get in the way.. and initially it does:
But a quick rotation and all is good..

I\'m a little concerned about the filter dragging in hot air from around the radiator. At some stage i think i need to be doing either a cold air feed or to run a longer inlet pipe to somewhere sensible.. but for the moment it\'s in and I\'m HAPPY :D

Just get a couple of silicone bends and move it too above the IC or to the side of it

My DIY scoop bonnet makes it tight for space above the IC.. not sure there\'s any space to be honest.

So I\'ve discovered that the best tool for removing sound deadening is actually winter! Forget a blow torch or freeze it spray. Just wait untill the weather drops to bellow zero, take a rubber mallet and smash the crap out of it, then using a nylon / plastic trim tool pry the sound deadening away from the shell in as few pieces as possible :D

I\'m trying to keep it all together to weigh it, so far it seems like alot of effort for not alot of weight to be completely honest. But every little helps I guess

So instead im polishing.. or rather trying to :o

80 grit to get rid of most of the cast marks:

Then some 400, then 800 then the polishing wheel attached to a drill:

I also had the desire to clean up and polish my new T04R ...

80 grit to clear off cast marks

Loads more to do on it, but gives you an idea:

Have to decide on best way to plumb this in. Should be an improvement on last years can of strong bow

SOOO many little bits and pieces to buy. Starting to feel like this is going take a while to get back together :(

Need to aquire:

So about 500ml ish for a full tank?

I don\'t mind smokey massively, cant be any worse than it\'s been already with a blown seal on the rear turbo.

Am i right in thinking some premix smells sweet?

Got a link for where to buy cheap?

Between 50&60 litres for 500ml. I think I got the STHIL premix off eBay. I have used a lot of different premixes. The ones used by 2strokes scooters/motor bikes are the best ones.

There used to be KB2T made by millers oils but due to some terrorists using one of the Ingrediants for bombs are something they have had to make something else. I think it is called KBRT I think, it\'s not cheap but is great. However I would recommend using some kind of water injection to stop it sticking to the rotors and building up carben which I had a slight problem with previously on an engine, but I was running it in, 3500rpm, limit. You will be red lining it so shouldn\'t have carbon build up.

Progress finaly after more bits now available to actualy get on with stuff.

I did some more polishing of the compressor housing... and I\'m guna be honest now (to save getting flamed later).. it really aint great, but i totaly lost patience with it

So i reassembled the turbo and re did part of the heat wrap on the manifold where it had torn. Then did "final" fit of the turbo:

I also heat wrapped the downpipe

Resistors and connectors for the Bosch 1680 injectors :

Plugs soldered directly to loom to replace OEM plugs, resistors are to be hidden away at the ECU end of the loom.. in theory to prevent anything nasty happening to them:

My oil feel line for the turbo is definatly unuseable as it;s been badly pinched. I have another, but one end is the wrong size, so i need to fine a thread adapter.

Other than that I\'ve got a :censored::censored::censored::censored: load of bits to put back together and lots of little bits missing still.

But it\'s heading to a good place now, hopefully be in a position to book mapping in the not to distant future

Think its about a litre, more than enough as i\'ll never be WOT for very long.

Got a walbro in tank for lift pump, fills into the port, and overflow from the pot back to tank.

Then feed from pot will goto a Bosch 044 to feed the rails and return to pot.

Will all be push on fittings for the lot to safe dosh

Push one are fine, just double clamp them to be safe. AN fittings are great but you will have skunked £500 on those before you even notice! I know I did! And still not finished:(

This is exactly why i have given up on the idea of using AN fittings.

Push on are WAY cheaper and less to think about, all the AN sizes and fittings confuse me...

Good advice on the double clamp :yes

Still got lots to buy, are the barb sizes for the tank take offs generaly 8mm or 10mm??

Will do, also need to get some fuel filters for the setup so they can just stay 10mm  and the Bosch can just have 10mm in and 8mm out or what ever the size is.

Time slipping away very quick atm, and having started the new job my mind has been elsewhere.

My frist event is on Sunday the 17th, so I have been getting worried about whether or not this will be back together and mapped in time for then.

So with this in mind i was up till 3:30 last night throwing lots of bits back together.

I\'ve had to start again with my wiring look, as the one i had soldered the injectors & resistors to was extremely brittle and a couple of connectors snapped while i was refitting. So i\'ve gone back to my previous loom and kept it simple by jusst wrapping up the unwanted plugs rather than stripping and then done the soldering (this time with heat shrink )

I then got on with the list of stuff that\'s outstanding, highlights of which are

The heat sheild it a bit slap dash but should do the job and looks neat(ish)

It\'s still a mess but getting there

Coming along nicely. Do you think you will have it done for your first session? Have you thought of moving onto competitive sliding as well as taxi?

I\'d love to complete, but the costs are huge. Would need to spend around a 1000/1500 to get the car fitted with the safety gear.

Then there\'s the huge costs of getting to and from events, accommodation, fuel, tyres and of course keeping up with the competition regarding performance is tough.

If I got offered a spot on the EDC rather than BDC I\'d probably be up for it, but after all the expense you don\'t get much seat time in the BDC.

Any way... Plenty more seat time required to get up to top skill level :-)

As for he car I\'m doing some more bits and bobs tonight, and hopefully starting her up Saturday morning.

Last time i went to see the EDC it was 350z cressida, chaser, BMW and the rest were silvias with 1JZ or 2 JZ, not enough variety.

havent been to BDC yet but i can see it being a pain in the arse for seat time as their are a lot of competitors

Very true on the variety front. Pete Barber was the man to represent the rotary scene in the drift scene but now he\'s moved onto datsuns :-(

BDC has too many classes and drivers, so practice time is next to nothing and if you go out in the early stages of qualifying or head to heads you\'d be pretty :censored::censored::censored::censored:ed off with having thrown money at nothing. I\'m happy with the display days for the moment. They pay for themselves and its all day drifting. Only downside is they are all small circuit and 2nd gear stuff.... Can\'t complain tho!!!

Pretty much ready to do a test start of the car this weekend :-O

Engine back together, fluids done, minor wiring issues which I\'ll look at over the weekend.

Did a sensor check on the Apexi to see if all was healthy, few things highlighted due to the single conversion & OMP removal:

Just need to get the bumpers and wheels back on and it\'s ready for the rollers :-)

il be weighing what I\'ve removed to confirm, but there\'s no way is multiple kilos. must be thinner or lesd of it in the fd then.

I removed everything from inside the car (not the boot)  4kg :cool

My friend Alex came through today with my new swirlpot which is designed on the size and shape of the charcoal canister so will be nicely hidden under the car :D

What you recon?

I put all the crap into a bag today and figured it to be about 3kgs top, but having said that, I missed a few sections.

What do you mean what else needs removing? I\'ve stripped he canister and plugged the lines. Slight issue being pressure build up during hot weather and lots of drifting :-/ sorted by opening he filler cap every so often :-)

Nice work on mounting the resistors, looks neater.

As expected its a different beast. Its laggier than non seq twins but the power progression isnt too harsh. it comes on around 4500 and comes on strong. From 4500 upwards its like a rocket :-)

Sounds good. 3500 rpm power band. I\'m sure in the future a bit of porting could lower the rpms for spool or possibly a ball bearing turbo if the engine keeps going strong.

But most important if all your hard work..... Did it create more tyre smoke?

Didn\'t take long to work out that one of my rear shocks has a leak. FML

With a lack of dollars and a load of taxi events coming up this is bad news. Luckily one of my sponsors RE:CTS  (keith\'s mobile compression testing) has a spare set of rears which he going to be sending me which will keep me drifting. :-)

Ask mad mike when he\'s sticking 2 turbos on the 4 rotor, as that\'s the only next thing he can do to make it better
Title: FDrift taxi 2013
Post by: Will66 on June 04, 2013, 06:24:28 PM
Why would he?  He\'s got 800+hp from the 20B in the RX8 and I think he prefers that for Formula D style events but he likes the lightning response from the RX7 for the more D1GP style stuff.
Title: FDrift taxi 2013
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on June 04, 2013, 07:09:02 PM
He doesn\'t compete in formula D any more, he switches between the fd and rx8 for the D1 NZ championship. The FD is mainly for demos.

If he turbo\'d the 4 rotor he would have 1,000 HP easily so that would be better than the rx8s power. One of his friends/customers has a single turbo 4 rotor in a Lexus. Iirc. It\'s on his YouTube channel, check it out.

I rekon he will turbo it as the car is currently in its fifth generation of modification, and always does something to get his name back in the spot light or get more sponsors.

He is also driving a 4 rotor in the Asia formula D by Magic I think and they\'re going to be turboing that 4 rotor to make it competitive in that series
Title: FDrift taxi 2013
Post by: Will66 on June 04, 2013, 10:38:10 PM
I know he doesn\'t do Formula D any more, I said Formula D style events, relatively high speed tracks requiring a broader spread of torque.  Plus I think half the FD\'s appeal is its immense noise and turbos would kill that.
