Title: Yes road tax again!
Post by: mpk490p on November 15, 2012, 10:30:00 PM
i know there has been several threads about changing the engine classification to a 1.3 for cheaper road tax, i changed mine (FB) about 6 years ago when i did a engine swop, (just put 1.3 on the form and it came back changed!)
i\'m now looking at buying a FD and i notice more and more are now being changed to 2.6 when docs are being sent back to the DVLA for change of owner or address.

so my question is has anyone had any joy changing from 2.6 to 1.3 recently? or is this now dead in the water thanks to the DVLA being centrally controled?

had this response back from the DVLA, have asked if this applies to cars produced before the rule (i can guess the answer)

Hello Mark,

Thank you for contacting Mazda Motors UK Ltd concerning the engine capacity of the RX- 7.

I can confirm that the actual engine capacity of the rotary engine fitted to the RX-7 is 1308cc as determined by the manufacturer.

However, under a long standing agreement between Motor Manufacturers and the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT), Mazda UK has agreed to register new rotary engine cars declaring the engine capacity as 2 x swept volume.

When applying this rule, the effective engine capacity for this engine becomes 2616cc, which is more aligned to the performance and emissions characteristics of this vehicle.

This figure will appear on the V5 registration document and should therefore be used in any official UK correspondence concerning the vehicle and any related insurance policies.

I hope this provides the necessary clarification you require, however please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further information.

Best wishes,

Kate Donovan

I\'ve had this argument with the DVLA in Cardiff regarding the registration form when you first register JDM cars in the UK. It clearly states engine CC, i got a call from them stating that i\'d incorrectly registered a car as a 1300cc as opposed to a 2600cc.
My argument is that the form does not ask you for the \'volumetric output\' only the CC which is 654cc x 2 = 1308cc
I told them i wasn\'t paying anymore money as i had registered over 100 RX7\'s as 1300cc\'s, the reply was \'well we shall cancel the road tax and then your customers RX7 will then be clamped if seen on the road\'..............i paid the extra!!

Like Dave I used to register the fresh imports as 1308cc, I used to get away with it until about a year ago.   Every FD since has been picked up and DVLA they simply wont register it unless it goes down as 2616cc.  In all honesty dont waste your time, you wont get them to change it once its registered.

Hello Mark,

I can confirm the agreement affects all rotary engined vehicles that Mazda have imported / registered in the UK.

I hope this has been useful for you; if you have any further enquiries, please don\'t hesitate to ask.
