Title: Anyone with a compression tester near norwich?
Post by: wiggman2030 on October 22, 2012, 03:17:05 PM
I need my rex compression tested. It\'s never been done and it\'s getting hard to start once it\'s warm. It was rebuilt about 8000 miles ago so it should be ok but i\'d like to eliminate compression as a culprit. The only reason being that my omp failed. Im currently running premix but im hoping that no damage has been done before hand. I\'d hate to get another rebuild done as it\'s out of warranty too :-(

Ah, yeah that\'s me :-) I just want to make sure that the engine is not on it\'s way out. Just to eliminate it as a cause for it not starting very well when warm. It was rebuilt about 8000 miles ago so I hope not lol. I take it yours is all good now :-)

Yeah man mines ok, fingers crossed. It made it to Nurburgring and back!

Is it a Jimmys rebuild? Think mine is on about 20k now. Do you know how long it ran without an OMP? How did you find out it was broken?

No I got it rebuilt by a guy named Steve Rivetts in London. He was really great, very passionate about RX-7\'s. I think that the OMP had been failing on and off for quite a while. The heat light on the dash kept flashing on and off at random times. I just thought that it was the knock sensor getting confused by the vibration/noise of the loud exhaust as people seem to have that problem. It wasn\'t until it kept on flashing all the time that I looked into it. The sensor check on the apexi showed that the OMP voltage was too low and that it wasn\'t increasing as the rev\'s went up. Im guessing that this is what was failing when the light kept flashing before. As soon as I noticed that it was the OMP I started  running premix but i think the damage has been done :-( Bit of a shame as the car was running really well until recently. Hopefully the compression test will be ok but Im expecting the worse......

It\'s strange because the car will start fine when it\'s warm as long as I don\'t leave it more than an hour or so. If the water temp starts cooling down (say to 60 degrees) It takes two or three times to get it running. Quite embarrassing when you are around other people lol. If it needs a rebuild then it needs a rebuild. I wont give up on rotaries that easily :-)

Hmm sounds similar to when mine chipped a tip. Is the idle rougher? Does it flood easily? I would try not to drive it until you get it checked. A normal compression check will tell you if its down on one rotor, just not accurate figures.

Good luck though dude.

It only idles roughly when the car has been turned on from warm. This doesn\'t last long it soon stablises, it doesn\'t flood it\'s just hard to start if it\'s left for a while. it feels like it\'s not getting any fuel for a while. I always have to prime the system before I try to start it. If not it will turn over until the cows come home without starting. It\'s quite annoying lol.

hmm well fingers crossed buddy it isn\'t compression. Mine stunk of fuel, idled really badly, sounded like a tractor and flooded a lot. It actually ran fairly smoothly when moving but was noticeably down on power.

Maybe the pump isn\'t getting enough power? Has it been rewired? Earth come loose or something?

It\'s got the normal feed plus a direct feed from the battery. I will check for any corrosion though just in case. I\'ll let you know how I get on with the piston compression tester. At least it will give me an idea. Cheers for the help mate :-)
